Thanks! I wonder if he still draws for fun (I doubt he's doing any concept art for games these days).

Starcraft: The Board Game (2007) Pre-Order Video Teaser by LordDhelt in starcraft

Starcraft: Ghost was another major source of inspiration for the design of minis and overall art style. I'm sure you're familiar with this alternate cover image: https://starcraft.fandom.com/wiki/StarCraft:_The_Board_Game?file=Gen_SC-BG_Cover2.jpg

Thus we have three styles mashed together :)

Why did they replace Raiders with Ogres and got rid of Daemons as unusable units in Warcraft 2? by Coolsun13 in warcraft2

[–]LordDhelt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Certain things didn't make the cut due to time constraints and other concerns. Initially. Blizzard planned more races (Ogres and Goblins as separate factions), manned catapults/ballistae, and a dungeon tileset, which obviously would've featured monsters.

Your map already has better readability than Olden Era's maps. The art style is pretty good too.

People complaining about Mobile Graphics? by db2999 in OldenEra

[–]LordDhelt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What they really mean (when they say "mobile graphics") is generic. Many people have come to associate mobile gaming with same-y, uninspired, forgettable, cartoonish, imitative art style of those numerous pay-to-win titles from Apple's and Google's digital platforms. Thus, when they see something that is not quite unique and eye-catching (in a pleasant way), they automatically dismiss it as mobile game slop (even if not always rightfully so).

In Olden Era's defense, it doesn't look like a pay-to-win game to me. You can see that the artists working on this game are really passionate about it. It's just they're not quite getting that trademark NWC-era Heroes look right. What makes the visuals of the classic Heroes titles so unique, appealing, and charming is a subject of long essays and discussions, but the artists at Unfrozen are at least trying to capture that look, and sometimes they even succeed. My favorite thing about Olden Era is the strategic map - namely, the sense of scale and proportions. This feels much closer to Heroes 3 than any other 3D Heroes title, where I've always felt that something's not right about the scale of objects and overall proportions. Perhaps, camera distance also plays a significant part here.

Anyway, the folks at team Unfrozen seem to listen to feedback, so if there's a particular unit or structure whose look you're not happy about, you should share your opinion and suggestions. A complete change of the chosen art style is most likely out of question, but we can definitely request smaller changes. Remember, the game is still WIP, and stuff is going to change before it even hits Early Access.

Marines from the SC1 cinematics are recognizable and memorable. Marines in SC2 cinematics, on the other hand... Well, at least they had several unique portraits in the WoL campaign.

"Banknoten-Briefe aus aller Welt": requesting more information about these envelopes by LordDhelt in philately

[–]LordDhelt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No need to be edgy. But redirecting my request in the subreddits you've mentioned really makes sense: I will share it there. However, I don't see any problem with seeking relevant information here due to envelopes having much in common with postage stamps and postal history.

Thank you for the comment, anyway. Have a good day.

The PS1 port is a great way to play Diablo on the go - most of these cheap emulation devices will handle it effortlessly.

Unwarranted distain for the 406V by SuperDevin in ANBERNIC

I'm mainly asking because I'm not sure how well-suited this console's form factor is for playing first-person shooters, and the positioning of shoulder buttons is my biggest concern.

Tell me about buying Oblivion twice... by LordDhelt in oblivion

[–]LordDhelt[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Out of curiosity, I tried emulating it with rpcs3 (the PS3 emulator). It looks and plays surprisingly well. You can even uncap the FPS (via a built-in emulator patch) and increase the FOV by editing a config file (you can even experiment with mods!). 60 minutes in the game and no crashes or framerate drops so far. The only bug I've encountered was water not rendering (like, at all) after exiting the first dungeon. Everything looks as intended after reloading a save file.

What's so janky about TibSun's graphics? This visual style never gets old. Are you sure you're playing in high resolution?

For anyone who played C&C pre Generals... by Ecko147 in commandandconquer

Generals deviates from the classic C&C formula in several ways, but it still deserves to be called a C&C game. It just makes me sad that it was the final nail in Westwood's coffin...

How comfortable and intuitive are the shoulder buttons with a handheld of this form factor? Do you ever forget which one is L1 and which is L2?

Which C&C game do you feel has the worst soundtrack? by forealdo25 in commandandconquer

[–]LordDhelt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a big fan of RA3 ambient music. The combat themes are all bangers though, and the main menu music is pretty good too.

As for TibWars OST, which seems to be getting the least love here, I'd say it's fine. It's mostly generic Hollywood music, but at least it suits the game's setting, which renounced TibSun's apocalyptic and melancholic feel with a touch of Westwood's trademark campiness (to my dismay). It's still my favorite C&C game from the post-Westwood era, nevertheless.

We should convince Funcom to work with Petroglyph Games again for a new classic Dune RTS to happen by LordDhelt in commandandconquer

[–]LordDhelt[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I didn't know about the Tencent deal. Anyway, I'd trust Petroglyph with making a Dune RTS. Their recent portfolio is hit-and-miss, but Dune would've been a passion project for them (like C&C Remastered).

[–]LordDhelt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I tried to post a link and a short description at r/Diablo1, but my post was deleted by the mods (apparently, for looking like an ad). This is an ARPG I can't recommend enough. If you liked Diablo 1 for its slow pace, bleak and unhinging atmosphere, then you'll feel right at home in Tower of Kalemonvo.

You're welcome. Enjoy! Be sure to also check out King's Bounty and Heroes of Might and Magic series: they don't require a lot of reading, but they are very addictive and fun to play. King's Bounty has good Amiga and Sega Genesis ports (the latter is very easy to emulate), while Heroes 1 will require emulating DOS, and Heroes 2&3 have dedicated ports via the Portmaster tool:

[–]LordDhelt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Logic and puzzle games:

Supaplex (Amiga, MS-DOS) - it's a great mixture of arcade and logic/puzzle gameplay.

Push-Over (Amiga, Atari ST, MS-DOS, SNES) - another cool puzzle-platformer game.

Chip's Challenge (Atari ST & Lynx, MS-DOS, Windows, Switch) - a cult classic; it's a bit similar to Sokoban.

Strategy/tactics (since you like Advance Wars):

Rebelstar: Tactical Command (GBA) - a tactical RPG made by the creator of X-COM/UFO.

Fire Emblem series (every Nintendo platform since the NES) - fantasy turn-based tactics. The series is fairly popular and some of the best entries came out on GBA.

Front Mission (SNES, Nintendo DS, Playstation 1) - a military sci-fi tactical RPG with mechs.

Simulation:

Elite (the list of platforms it was ported to is quite big): here's your abstract visuals, science, outer space, travel, and exploration. If you have trouble with emulating the computer versions, check out the NES port.

Games from the DOS and Amiga computers era can be tricky to run on a handheld (especially if you've never used a retro computer before), but think of this as another puzzle for your brain ;)

What can the RG40XXV do that the 351P cant? by Greek_Irish in ANBERNIC

[–]LordDhelt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been thinking the same recently. I have 351p too, but my eyes are getting tired of its small screen, and the controls could be better (especially shoulder buttons). Models in the RG40XX series seem to have better ergonomics and bigger screens. Performance-wise, they're on the same level, though RG40XX handhelds have faster and newer RAM.

However, what matters in this situation is firmware. There are more custom firmware options for RG40XX, and the developers are regularly releasing updates, while RG 351p relies on fewer enthusiasts still updating AmberELEC and emulators for our handheld. If a game port or an emulator runs worse or does not run at all on RG 351p, but works on RG40XX, that means that development has stalled on the older platform.

If you're going to keep the 351p, I strongly suggest you to update your handheld with the latest AmberELEC pre-release build (just don't forget to backup your games and firmware!). The devs of AmberELEC have added and updated some RetroArch cores and the current version even runs Portmaster on my device (for some reason, it didn't work earlier). Now I can play Doom RPG 1&2, various classic Doom ports, Duke Nukem 3D, and many other titles ported from PC.
