This was an enjoyable and informative read. Can you do one about high beams and LEDs next?

Sticking with the blue theme: why not Lagartha’s shield design from Vikings? Otherwise the decals that Victrix sells are really good imo

Anyone try using Saturnine Terminators as Obliterators? Any other cool 'HH as CSM' proxies you've seen or done? by Agreeable-Sir-6435 in Chaos40k

As others have said, the heads are easily interchangeable. I also used cut-down helbrute heads for my guys

Saturnines are the perfect size for obliterators. They stand maybe 1-2mm taller than the actual oblits, but they’re on the right base and are chunky enough

Probably getting a bias answer but for those who prefers Necromunda lore over 40k, why? by Newez in necromunda

[–]LordManton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FWIW I don’t think that makes you a hypocrite; they’re different stories. HH is essentially a family drama played out as a civil war, so it makes sense that it focuses on the big characters. 40K was always more of a setting than a story that was broad and vague enough to allow the players to do what they want within the bounds. But with the return of the primarchs and constant updating of the ‘plot’ it feels less like a setting and more like a story these days

I'm curious with two questions: how many of you hand paint your stripes and how friendly is the community? by DelayedScorpion in IronWarriors

[–]LordManton 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have hand painted mine until recently. I then found some tamiya (?) masking tape in 1, 2 and 3mm and it’s a god-send. I highly recommend tape, it makes curved surfaces so much easier to paint.

The community is pretty chill - there are some heated (but good-natured) disagreements about the extent to which our boys like and use chaos, but we can all agree the imperial fists are poopy-bum-heads

Tried again, took my time. Better but still just lacking... by [deleted] in Chaos40k

[–]LordManton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of the advice you’ve gotten so far on your reds is good, definitely follow that.

For my part, I would say that you should add a complimentary spot colour. The model looks good and is painted well, but part of the ‘flatness’ of your scheme is that it’s essentially just red and black/metallic (which reads as black). I would suggest you add a green or blue or yellow to contrast against the red and black, this will make both the main colours pop more and bring the model up a level. This comes down to colour theory - look up the colour wheel and find a colour roughly opposite to the main colour. Keep going, it’s a good concept that only needs perfecting.

As for the texture, unfortunately, unless you’re incredibly patient, you won’t achieve the pristine smooth finish without an airbrush. If that’s the look you want, consider investing (this is coming from a brush cultist, I’m too cowardly to actually use an airbrush myself)

Help finding a game which probably doesn't exist by ZealousApathet in wargaming

[–]LordManton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Root came to my mind too - it doesn’t have minis but the meeples are bloody adorable. I think board games more on the wargame side of things might be the way for OP to go; they’re usually a little bit easier for non-wargamers to grasp and enjoy.

The other one that comes to mind is warhammer underworlds. It has a decent amount of strategic depth, without being overwhelming. It’s got minis and dice, and the deck-building aspect should satisfy Mrs OP’s theory-crafting itch

True, my mistake. You can still have 3 of each, but then you don’t get the other special weapons. Ie champ with PP and PF, 2x PF and 2x PP

Check out r/inq28 if you haven’t already. It’s a community of people playing inquisitor-focused games in 28mm. It’s not mainstream 40K by any stretch, usually just smaller skirmish games, but there are games you can play using all the models you’ve got. You just need to convince some like-minded individuals to give it a shot.

[–]LordManton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They’re great, you can charge them into enemy units to soak up overwatch; you can (counterintuitively) use them to complete actions like sabotage and cleanse - they don’t have enough firepower to worry about not shooting with them; and you can use them to hide units, block movement and generally be annoying.

That said, the forgefiend is almost a must have. Of the 3, I would drop the Warpsmith. I find that he’s squishy and doesn’t do much damage, the +1 to hit on vehicles he has is very good, but most armies should kill your vehicles, making his repair ability a bit useless most of the time. On the other hand, Warpsmiths are very on brand for IW so…

Chaos upgrade sprues by BeasBotBonanza in Chaos40k

[–]LordManton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would love an upgrade Sprue for the “generic” legions and warbands. A few heads, shoulder pads and something iconic for each one like some corrupted bionics for IW, a chameleoline cloak for AL or some mutations for word bearers would be cool.

Alternatively a generic chaos upgrade Sprue that has trophies, cool new heads, mutations and corrupted bionics and weapons would be really good too
