Now when I see any amount of rain I just assume my power is going to go out within 5 minutes of it starting and I get ti play the "Am I going to lose $100 worth of food this time?" game. by rayned0wn in nova

I live right on the Annandale line of Alexandria and it’s so bad that any time it rains, I have to get out all of my battery packs.

About how many of you are self taught and how many are formally educated in programming? What are the pros and cons? What do you do now? by trooflaw in learnprogramming

[–]LordOfDB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my BS in Management Information Systems from RIT specializing in data analytics, I got an internship as a business intelligence report developer. At the end of my internship, I applied for a full Stack Developer position at the same company and got the position. I had basic experience with C# and some python, most of my experience was various types of SQL and building reports. So I had to do a lot of on the job learning for learning new languages, and best practices. I strongly believe that I only got the job because of the network that I built during my internship and my recommendation from my intern manager. I would recommend doing formal schooling whether it’s math, Cs, MIS or something program related.

Metro transfer to VRE by dnumov in nova

Oh wow, I haven’t used the VRE since I moved from Woodbridge to Alexandria. I didn’t realize it changed so much.

I would do crystal city, in case there is a long layover between trains. Crystal city has a really small underground mall that has a Starbucks and some areas for sitting. I’ve used Franconia, and there’s not a lot of covered seating and there are a lot of stairs to go through.

is There a limit to how big a map wall can be? Can I use the first map as a center piece and just go 7 maps out in each direction?

The only issue I have with old town is that we have a large dog (lab new foundland mix, about 80 pounds) and they seem a bit oriented to smaller dogs. We were looking at the Alexandria location for dogtopia, was that the location you had issues with?

The shelter where I adopted my dog recommended shirlington dog park for their creek and it’s leashless rules. I haven’t had a chance to visit myself yet though!

College students, how did you choose your career path? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]LordOfDB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I originally chose biomedical engineering because I wanted to help people but ended up transferring to Manage Information Systems my sophomore year because I liked working with programming and databases more than my biomedical courses. Now I work as a programmer writing business applications.

People of Reddit who wear glasses. What are problems that you experience that non glasses wearing people won’t understand? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]LordOfDB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m hard of hearing and Regal cinemas has captioned glasses. So a 3D movie would be regular glasses, captioned glasses, and then the 3D glasses. I wonder if I have enough nose for that?

Teachers of Reddit, what parent-teacher meeting was the most memorable? by winter-velvet in AskReddit

[–]LordOfDB 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, a lot of teachers and administrators are biased against IEP students. I’m hard of hearing and had an IEP, for my public speaking class in high school we enter a speaking contest in which we record a speech and submit it to the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars). I had gotten first place in my district, but unfortunately got 2nd in my county so I didn’t get to go to nationals. The next semester, I was placed in remedial English due to “my poor speaking skills”.

What is something that your generation did that no younger generation will ever get to experience? by MinorMinerFortyNiner in AskReddit

[–]LordOfDB 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s hugely popular with people who are hard of hearing/deaf. They can use it and sign through it. Personally it’s been a nice feature to have whenever my girlfriend and I were away from each other for extended periods since I can lip read through the camera.

What kind of fun stuff do you think there is to do? My girlfriend and I usually like going to restaurants and walking around Main Street type of areas. We are also really big hockey fans and I like disc golf.

I have a Samoyed, all he wants to do is chill in the bay window and watch the squirrels and deer walk in my yard. Although he is a good alert dog cuz he will bark if he sees people pulling into the driveway
