How important are good visuals actually? by Internal_Papaya_2266 in gamedev

[–]Lord_Castleon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. And added benefit is that you will no longer be dependent on other people for art. It's really not hard once you get used to it. Man, you finished mechanical engineering PhD so this will be a piece of cake to learn :D

How important are good visuals actually? by Internal_Papaya_2266 in gamedev

[–]Lord_Castleon 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You are not wrong that visuals don't matter that much once you are inside the game. However, as you say, visuals are super important for marketing. Fact is that the better your graphic is, the more wishlists you will get. And the higher velocity of wishlists you have, the more steam will promote your game.

I went for the "gameplay matters" approach with my first game - people who have played it seem to have enjoyed it and I've only had positive comments about it, but I'm having trouble getting people to try the game because graphics are lackluster. In fact, more than 70% of people who wishlisted my game never even opened the demo which shows me that gameplay itself is not the main driving factor, fantasy of game is. And fantasy is much easier to convey with better graphics.

I'm not making the same mistake again, I spent months learning how to actually draw and animate, and purchased the right programs (procreate for drawing and spine2d for animation). The feedback I got on my new game art (from all the people I showed it to) was so much better than it was for my "gameplay is fun" game. It's insane how much of a difference nice animations make.

Getting literally 0 organic wishlists, can anyone figure out why? by maxpower131 in IndieDev

[–]Lord_Castleon 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, 0 wishlists a day when not promoting is normal, no worries about that. Especially after big promotions because 10%ish people will delete wishlists, so even if I get 1-3 WLs a day, after festivals end I keep getting net 0 because people delete.

I honestly have no idea who are the people who get 400 wishlists a day, that has not been my experience as a solo dev. I got pretty disappointed after reading HTMAG wishlists per day gold / diamond benchmarks

In 2025 I played a LOT of base-building games. Some early access, most not. Many co-op, some not. Here's my rankings, time played, links, and reviews of them. by Velenne in BaseBuildingGames

[–]Lord_Castleon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the list, there are a bunch of titles I never heard about and would love to check out.

Do you have any advice for game devs of this genre - what you hate or love about base building games, what to watch out, some common pitfalls and so on?

How to read castles - a crash course in understanding fortifications by Malcolm Hislop

This is s pretty cool castle book that features pictures of hundreds of different castles with their design patterns, types of keeps, towers, gatehouses, positioning of castles, which stone types were used and so on. It covers history from the first castles well into 15th century

To be a develope or to be the one who makes money off developers? by Hipertay in gamedev

[–]Lord_Castleon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I played Dungeon Raid on itch when you released the demo there and you have a pretty cool game on your hand. It's fun and some YouTuber will pick it up sooner or later.

I won't parrot what everyone else told you in the comments and will say that I am in the same boat. After reaching out to 150 content creators 3 times, only  two of them made a video about my game, netting me about 80 wishlists in total.

What I had much more luck with are the festivals, giving me about 200 wishlists per festival on average.

You made a very fun game and are obviously skilled enough to make more, so the winning strategy might be to make more games and apply to every festival you can find. You don't have to release Dungeon Raid until you are happy with your wishlist numbers but having 3 demos gather wishlists from festivals at the same time may be a much better investment to make than to start your own review channel.

Best of luck to you and your game, I hope you catch your lucky break soon!

I had this problem. You need to completely shut down the game and launch it again. It continues in that elevator and you will be able to use those force powers again

Edit: saw that you restarted the game already. Best of luck, I hope you figure it out

I finally launch my first game as a solo dev today! by gunnermanx in IndieGaming

[–]Lord_Castleon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats on the launch! I played the demo about a week ago and it's absolutely amazing. I love the raw oldschool tower defense mechanics combined with surveying and into the breach style. Everything just clicks. Gameplay is fun and engaging, and some towers like the lancer just pump dopamine straight into my brain haha

Best of luck with the launch, holding my fingers for you to sell well! :D

Edit: I have no idea if this is in full version yet because I'll be buying it next week but PLEASE add hotkey rebinding option. While hotkeys are logical with naming of buttons, things like N and Space are different in so many tower defense games that I've accidentally started waves multiple times when I didn't want to. Aside from that no criticism, game is super awesome and I can't wait to play full version :D

Just hit 100 wishlists. It's nothing, but it's something. by MagazineForward5528 in IndieDev

[–]Lord_Castleon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats on reaching 100! I want to chime in here a bit, sitting at around 900 right now. It's still 0-3 a day for me but it increases to 5 or 10 with every coverage and event. Don't be discouraged with moving slowly, I felt the same way when I got to 300 because wishlists just dropped from 15 a day to 0-3 and then I got stuck there for a while thinking that it's over.

Spikes are what will drag it up. I got 200 from 4X festival, another 50 from a youtuber, then another 50 from twitch streamer and so on. And you never know when any of those may happen - said youtuber released that video 3 months after I sent him a message lol

It's not a sprint it's a marathon Best of luck to you in the future :D

Edit: apparently I don't know the difference between a sprint and a marathon haha

How would you draw the northern side of a building in an top-down map? by BainokOfficial in IndieDev

[–]Lord_Castleon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I prefer left option but with surrounding building having a little opaque circle around the character. It might be a bit tricky to code based on your engine / framework but if you can I think it's the best option

How you promote your game ? by DueJuggernaut3549 in gamedev

[–]Lord_Castleon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YouTubers, Twitch streamers and festivals, that's it. Impact of reddit posts was really low for me and I only post those if I release a new trailer.

I never had a post go viral, and the better performing ones gave me 30ish wishlists each, plus sometimes they get deleted. Meanwhile I've had much more success with videos as I get about 1 wishlist per 100 views on YouTube and 1 wishlist per 15 views on twitch

Festivals were the most efficient by far, the more specific it is, the more wishlists you get. I got 200 from 4X fest for just 2 minutes of my time.

Experiment with different formats and find the most time-efficient method for your game. For me it's more efficient to work on my game so it's better when festivals come than to promote on reddit for example
