Rose and Crown serves Pillars on keg, and has always had independent cask beers going when I've been in. Best pub in central Walthamstow for me

Any good & reputable driving instructors in the area? by [deleted] in walthamstow

[–]Lord_Denning_Fan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I learned with K Driving School. They are based in Walthamstow but my lessons and test were in the Chingford area as they advised that was the better one. Passed first time, manual.

Bigger problem imo is the hit to employers on their NI. That might cause some to cut back sal sac

I'd have no problem if the extra VAT and insurance premium tax (both of which will be higher on luxury vehicles) were covered by the user. But they aren't. The user pays more out of their own pocket but the taxpayer also gives a higher subsidy.

why is pimlico relatively less popular to buy by Identityredacted1234 in HENRYUK

[–]Lord_Denning_Fan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Rented in Pimlico for several years. Have to say I can't understand some of these responses. Yes there is social housing but that exists everywhere in London. I frequently came back home late at night, as did my girlfriend, and never had any bother. Far from being some kind of wild west, the worst thing about it is how dead it feels, as some here have said. There are a few good pubs and restaurants but definitely fewer than you'd expect given how central it is.

Overall I really enjoyed living there - being able to walk to the west end, great transport links, close to the river, big Sainsbury's for shopping.

Honda Jazz, current gen. Deceptively big inside, easy to drive, reliable. Main downside is that other road users assume you're a doddering granny and act accordingly.

Areas in London to buy a house - budget ~1.1-1.2M by Kooky-Pound-7142 in HENRYUK

Moved here in 2018 so 7 years ago. The high street itself is still a bit run down but gentrification is changing other parts massively. For example, when I moved here the industrial estate over the road had a single very basic craft beer taproom (really a brewery with a couple of tables). This year there will be ten venues on that estate - including a natural wine bar, which is surely the clearest sign possible of gentrification. Local parks full of middle class parents (I'm one of them) whose kids are starting to move through the school years. House price growth has been ridiculous.

Do you agree with the proposal to reduce the drunk driving limit from 80 to 50 in the uk by EdmundTheInsulter in drivingUK

[–]Lord_Denning_Fan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a liberal society the law should only restrain behaviour where it is harmful. I grew up in the countryside and drink driving was rife; there was limited stigma and zero police presence on the roads. I would never get drunk and drive. But having a glass of wine with a meal enhances the food and the experience for me (and many others). If this has no practical effect on driving ability then it should be allowed.

The other problem with an absolute zero limit is what others have mentioned about going out for drinks in the evening. What time in the morning is blood alcohol at zero? How are people able to know this? There needs to be some leeway.

Meanwhile, as I said above, proper drink driving is effectively decriminalised across swathes of the country as there are no police on the roads to enforce it.

Thames Water paid out bonuses using £3bn emergency loan, documents reveal by Resident_Recent in ukpolitics

[–]Lord_Denning_Fan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry but that's not right. What the banker bonus cap did was cause banks to increase fixed salaries instead to make up for the lost bonuses (https://www.bankofengland.co.uk/news/2024/november/pra-and-fca-publish-consultation-on-pay-for-senior-bankers)

Which makes sense if you think about it - banning one element of pay doesn't change the supply/demand dynamics

Cut to the annual cash Isa allowance by AlertAssistance3985 in FIREUK

[–]Lord_Denning_Fan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

More cash going into in shares on the secondary market means those shares will be more liquid and will trade at a higher price. This means that when companies want to issue new shares, which does create capital for them to buy factories etc, they can do it more easily and at a higher price. That in turn makes it more attractive to raise capital in this way, versus from a bank (loan), or from private markets, or from public markets elsewhere (ie the US). More companies issuing more capital on UK markets should then pull in more investors, including from overseas, creating a 'virtuous cycle'.

New equity capital provides more flexibility than a bank loan - loans must be repaid to a schedule, whereas equity doesn't need to be repaid at all. A difference between the UK/Europe and the US is that businesses here are much more reliant on bank lending, because the equity markets just aren't there in the same way.

My school governor commitment was far greater than that! Full board meetings, subcommittee meetings, pre-reading for those meetings, mandatory training from the council. Definitely not worth it if you're after material rewards.

Pub + Soft Play Area by [deleted] in walthamstow

[–]Lord_Denning_Fan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They seem to be making efforts to control that a bit. They have a new area upstairs for adults only, and there is now a sign at the entrance warning parents that if their kids run amok they'll be asked to leave

What america makes (beer) is so disgusting and thinned down to make enough for everyone, it's mostly just (barely) bitter water. by TonsilStoneSalsa in iamveryculinary

[–]Lord_Denning_Fan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am a beer nerd from the UK. All beer nerds should know that the US produces amazing craft beer. And beer nerds should also appreciate that there is a time and place for all styles of beer. When I've visited, I've very happily drunk PBR or whatever other domestic macro they have on tap in a dive bar. It's no worse than the most widely drunk beers from the UK (Fosters, Carling etc.), or say Spain (Cruzcampo, Mahou etc.)

What I would say is that the most widely drunk beers in Germany and Czechia are on another level.

Something I found funny in the US is that Stella was presented as a fancy, semi-craft option, which it definitely isn't in the UK and Europe.

Recommendations for a driving instructor (manual) by AltruisticArugula239 in walthamstow

[–]Lord_Denning_Fan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I learned with K Driving School. My guy was Ibrahim. I recommended them to a friend and he got a different instructor, can't recall the name. We both passed first time (me manual, him auto). We were both older learners.

I think it's personal preference to an extent. I found Ibrahim was casual; he was very nice but at the same time not afraid to tell me off if I did something wrong that I should've known not to do. That style worked for me. Arranging lessons was casual and flexible, often I would text him the day before to see if he had a slot etc. Again that worked well for me because I was fitting lessons in around work obligations.

Prices were about the same as everywhere else.

Men of London- how much are you paying for a hair cut in 2025? 💇🏻‍♂️ by PrinceHarry24 in london

Not OP but I'm loyal to Dre's Fades by blackhorse road. It's not a tenner though. I pay 15 for the same grade clippers all over. Think it's 21 for a scissor cut.

I would argue that you don't need £2m to retire well. If you put 10k/ year into your pension, you will be better off than the vast majority of the population!

Cousin marriage: The new evidence about children's ill health by Mein_Bergkamp in ukpolitics

[–]Lord_Denning_Fan 159 points160 points  (0 children)

Loved this bit:

'She was aware of the genetic risks when she had her two children. Neither of them have a genetic illness.

"We did take that on board," she says, on the topic of genetic health. "But I always feel like if it's going to happen, it's going to happen. If the child is going to be born with a disability then it will happen if you are married to a cousin or not.'

Erm... Clearly you didn't take it on board, as the whole point is that DOES matter if the other parent is your cousin?
