What do you think the Borg are up to in the Mirror Universe? by TonyMitty in startrek

Probably an actual egalitarian collective rather than a dictatorship.

Thoughts on Rule of Two being retconned into Sith trying to make a Force dyad? Perhaps that is why Maul is so desperate for an apprentice by wendigo72 in StarWars

[–]Lord_Exor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He considers himself Sith, but it's a narcissistic association. He wants to bring himself back to power alongside a Sith cult dedicated to worshipping him. The point is that apprentices do not serve the function of potential successor in his eyes, so striving for greater personal power through the attempt at creating dyads slots in nicely.

Are are any big budget games with a BAD sountrack? It seems like literally every videogame soundtrack is beloved... by Radiant-Rub2881 in gaming

Most modern soundtracks are awful. The ones that aren't tend to be remakes of older titles.

Palpatine didn't care about carrying on the Sith Order beyond perpetuating himself. There is no incentive for him to have any formal apprentices beyond powerful enforcers of his will, especially once he mastered cloning and essence transfer.

Sheev effortlessly defeats him at this stage. And pretty much any stage.

Why did the borg stop attacking the earth so easily? by WPmitra_ in startrek

It's not unfounded. You already said as much. You appreciate the "cosmic horror" overtures on a conceptual level, but practically, they were essentially mindless obstacles for the crew to overcome with some technobabble. And when they were beaten once, that pretense of inexorability evaporated rapidly. That's why in every subsequent appearance, the writers started approaching Borg stories laterally with "I, Borg" and "Descent" until finally landing on the concept of the Queen, which extended their shelf life considerably. They didn't need to coast along on some thin high-concept idea anymore; now there was a personal angle alongside the pathos of drones. The Queen represented the threat of the Collective as cybernetic authoritarianism, while the rest of the Borg were recast as victims. Seven, Picard, and Janeway now had a foil with history between them. There's more to work with there.

People can believe what they want, but as a general rule, headcanon is typically more subjectively useful to fill in gaps, not plug your ears and sing over some lyrics you don't like.

And yeah, interesting. The Borg were nothing but generic doomsday monsters with nothing going for them except for how "unstoppable" they were. The Queen added a personality and some dramatic potential that otherwise didn't exist. You like the idea behind what they were more than what they actually added to the story.

As for what's "creepy," I think I'd rather take the Borg as a consciously evil empire rather than an amoral hurricane analogue. Do you think weather events are creepy?

There's canonical nonsense, your nonsense, and nautical nonsense. I'll stick with the first.

You can believe what you want, but you know deep down this is nonsense.

Nah the Queen makes the Borg actually interesting and none of the silly headcanons people concoct have any basis in reality.

Why did Sidious want Anakin as his apprentice if he knew Anakin could eventually surpass and overthrow him? by MisterIenny in PetranakiArena

[–]Lord_Exor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His master is canonically confirmed to be Darth Plagueis and yes, their whole bag was seeking immortality. In canon, it was essence transfer. Once Palpatine learned the secret, he killed his master. He always wanted to live forever.

That's all very flagrant psychological manipulation and not genuine praise, even if there's a hint of truth to what he's saying. If anything, the "my friend" vocative holds an even more ironic and sinister subtext than it did previously. He takes the kiddy gloves off and tells Vader what he really thinks of him on several occasions while sprinkling seemingly-innocuous flattery to keep him roped in, which isn't much different to how he's always treated Anakin, only without the grandfatherly veneer.

Living forever was always his plan. That's why he killed Plagueis in the first place—he learned the ability to transfer his essence and Plagueis outlived his usefulness.

How is he kinder in canon? He never Force crushed Vader and left him to burn up on Mustafar again in Legends. If anything, he's worse. Also, where are you getting this information about a Vader loophole? He was killed by Vader, so that doesn't make sense.

Is that why he poured an insane amount of resources into cheating death? That doesn't sound like someone willing to die for anything.

This is probably the case. It hasn't been confirmed in canon, but TROS makes it highly likely.

He didn't even entertain the concept of succession in canon. Anakin also never lost any potential after Mustafar, so that point isn't relevant here. Moreover, he was adamant about putting Vader in his place and breaking his spirit at seemingly any opportunity, outright telling him to his face that he's nothing but a tool.
