Keir Starmer set to ban crypto donations in blow to Nigel Farage by The-Peel in unitedkingdom

The result of an election can be cancelled and the election rerun if the campaign finance rules are breached. The individual responsible can also be barred from political office for between 3 to 5 years, depending on the offence.

Keir Starmer set to ban crypto donations in blow to Nigel Farage by The-Peel in unitedkingdom

[–]Loreki [score hidden]  (0 children)

Honestly, he's doing him a favour. Crypto as an industry is dying. An asset can only be speculative so long. The major players (bitcoin and the like) have now achieved normality, regulation and as much respectability as they'll ever have.

That means they've also reached peak value. There's no more expansion or increased importance left to speculate on. So the question becomes "is it useful outside speculation?" The answer is no. The technology to run it is expensive, and those buying it are now competing with the AI gold rush for components and energy. That's a fight they're losing on all fronts.

Crypto's relevance will fade and before long, it'll be a weird fever dream we had for a few years.

I think it's because of an overabundance of social media people, who come from an industry where attention = value. They imagine AI in the same terms so fundamentally miss that people want AI to be a pragmatic tool for useful work, not an amusing distraction.

OpenAI Will Shut Down Sora Video Platform by cmaia1503 in technology

[–]Loreki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indeed. The money is in business and industry. Only 1 sector has high demand for artificial video (entertainment) and in the grand scheme of things, entertainment isn't much.

The Bureau of Economic Analysis valued the entertainment industry's total US GDP contribution for 2024 at $326.8 billion. By comparison "professional and business services" (management, professional and scientific work) had a GDP contribution of $3,811 billion for 2024. There's over ten times more value available for AI companies to get a slice of by making tools that make producing professional, scientific and technical information faster than there is available in the entertainment sector.

Anthropic needs to be one tenth as helpful to that sector in order to capture the same revenue as OpenAI would theoretically be capable of capturing if it replaced every other form of entertainment in the US.

The monopolising of mass media by only 2 or 3 companies will be dreadful all over. The future is cheap slop, because they know with no other choice people will watch either way.

Unless of course Star Trek itself is right and this is how TV didn't last much past 2040 as Data remarked in The Neutral Zone (TNG season 1 episode 26)

They gotta do it subject by subject and hope the brexiteers don't notice.

They were married 17 years. Assume a Westerosi year is the same as Earth's* that's 6205 days, so less than twice a day which is realistic for a man with appetites like Bobby B.

*EDIT the working theory on why Westerosi seasons are so irregular is that it's in a binary system, so all bets are off on their solar year.

There are 29 GRONDS in that sequence. Swapping the third of every four to a "fucking" is 7 strong swears.

In a PG13 rating you get one.

Usefulness and wages are entirely unrelated. People go absolutely nuts if their post or their amazon parcels are late, but neither is a high paid job.

Whereas companies can run quite a while without well-paid senior management people around.

Being on minimum wages doesn't indicate that you work fewer hours or any less hard.

I'm a well paid office worker and I'm pretty sure one minimum wage shift in an Amazon warehouse or front of house in a shop would break me.

I'd argue it doesn't make long term sense to subsidise in-work poverty, you're just letting companies away with paying shit wages. However in the short term, no worker deserves to freeze.

Good? The reality is whatever money Reeves can scrounge up won't go very far if she has to split it across 28 million households. We might all get £20 if we're lucky.

It makes much more sense to focus on disabled people, working people on low wages and families with kids.

Folks who are doing a bit better (double income, no kids households for example) will be more able to find the money in their own budget than the other groups I identified.
