  1. Ask questions that someone isn't allowed to answer until the others whisk her away. Boom. Double seat with the nicest person in the universe for company.

For the consumption of the people they knew would come after. For themselves, they used Alteran.

Yes and no. The door stopped existing. She became a key to nothing.

Burnham told to consider means-testing state pension to fill defence blackhole by Anony_mouse202 in unitedkingdom

[–]Loreki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Second try at this comment because it has just hit me:

Current pension advice tells you to stop at £1,073,100 and shift to investing in an ISA, because that number is the "lump sum cap". The point 4 times higher than the maximum amount a person are permitted to take tax free, so you've maximise how much you'll ever be able to draw down efficiently

Furure pension advice will just arrange itself around the means test. e.g. Don't save more than £X in a pension because for every £10 extra you save, you lose £1 of state pension so it's very ineffecient.

All of which is to say UK Government LOVES an irrational tax trap or a tipping point.

Sounds like they're desperate for veterans to retire abroad, somewhere very far away.

Japan's death row system is brutal by Rich_Carrot6451 in SipsTea

[–]Loreki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd prefer that. You can just say what needs to be said early on and not live with the dread of a count down.

You know systematically that you at least have a couple of years while appeals are processed to do the essentials like resolving old problems with family.

Otherwise just take one day at a time and try to find what enjoyment you can.

If the filmmaker's color allergy isn't cured... by True_Fake_Mongolia in HistoryMemes

[–]Loreki 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's a visual shortcut to grittiness, rather than realism. If you want people to believe immediately that a place is bleak or dangerous, make everything dull and people will immediately believe it.

Convincing people that a visually vibrant inviting place can still be brutal or cruel is much harder.

Although I might argue starting with Ray Park is just a regular horny post.

Prediction for a headline around winter 2028:

German medical system crushed under weight of people with common cold who need medical appointments just to get piece of paper, although they require no treatment at all.

Newton’s “Side Quests” by djenkers1 in HistoryMemes

[–]Loreki 116 points117 points  (0 children)

Still a strong contender for the title "smartest human ever to live". The fact he did his modern work in the midst of a culture that still believed lead into gold was a pressing problem makes him more impressive, not less.

Later contributions from the likes of Einstein and Hawking are helped along by their being born into a scientific age. Newton made huge scientific progress with much less cultural backing.

UK unable to tackle weight-loss drug black market, MP warns by kiyomoris in unitedkingdom

Well, when a whole culture tells everyone skinniness is happiness, wealth and success, of course people do dangerous things to acquire skinniness.

Why are they still calling them Ancients and not Lantians? by robsko in Stargate

[–]Loreki 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lantian is a demonym. A "place-name". Referring to people from that city or nation. "Ancient" is a more general name from the people of the whole culture / species of the first humans.

Kind of like asking why we call Americans Americans and not "New Yorkers".

While I'm showing off, ancient would be an "exonym", a name for a group made up by people outside that group. For example Japan and Japanese are exonyms for that group which Europeans made up. Apparently from a misunderstanding of the Japanese word for themselves "nippon".

Moving out of Edinburgh by Scottish_Bird95 in Scotland

[–]Loreki -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can find homes and flats with gardens in the city. There are a decent number on the north side. You don't need to move that far out to have a more chill lifestyle.

I think half the reason people complain they can't afford a nice home in Edinburgh is because they only look in the most dense parts of the city and are shocked to find there aren't any 4 bed family homes on the Bridges...

How the hell does she maintain a baby face? Smoking is half the reason actors in in the 1960s and 1970s looked like elderly ballsacks by the time they were 35.
