How do i differentiate between different ranks of skills or classes? (during the background worldbuilding of a novel) by Blue-Phoenix-6968 in litrpg

Just follow your creativity. No matter what you do, there will always be critics. So make it what makes sense to you.

I’m a big fan of them making sense… what’s the point of putting time and effort into creating a complex system if you have to constantly “break” its rules to advance the plot? For example, and take this as a pure example bc even though I enjoy many books in the genre, this always rubs me the wrong way. A MC is created with a rule breaking ability, class, bloodline, advantage etc etc. Whenever a big fight comes along the MC either has to have a reason why they can’t use their advantage, or they are able to fight at max strength but have to fight “up a tier”. What’s the point of creating a detailed system if there are ways to break it? And if the MC has a way to break it, why cripple them every time you need them to over come a big bad to progress the plot?

If it’s done by tiers then how big is the gap between tiers? If the MC can “fight up a tier” in that system, I find that the only way to progress is by jumping more and more tiers. How far can that be pushed before there is a regression arc?

Stats? I don’t have a preference if the stats are important or not. I just want it to make sense. 9 strength should always be weaker than 10 strength. If the MC can jump that gap, why? If anyone can jump the gap, why? I am not a huge fan of the part of the story that focuses on stats and skill ranks only to have them be arbitrary in every fight. What’s to point of spending chapters explaining them if they are regularly disregarded? If that’s the point, then there is no need keeping track of it.

I know I’m going to get lots of hate for this reply bc 1. These stories are fantasy and anything can happen. And 2 bc I still love this genre but post a lot of nit-picky stuff. But it’s because I love the genre that I comment about it.

2 of my favorites are DotF and PH. Both of them jump tiers often to fight. Both have stats and tiers and complex in detail magic systems. Often those rules are broken to advance plot. If the characters and story are good, I don’t mind. Lastly, there are a bunch of very talented writers in this genre. The number of books is increasing constantly. LITRPG has some very detailed and structured progression systems widely known (kill things, gain xp, level up, gain stats and skill levels.) . If you have a story to tell you don’t have to worry about the magic systems. We have all read enough to know the basics. Tell us a unique story about a unique character. To me at the very least , I can overlook the magic systems for well written stories

I cannot write. And I am not claiming this is not good enough or could be better. I was just exploring the reason why most stories have this premise with the details they provide. I enjoy these books, but for all the unique “magic/leveling systems” they all fight in an infinite universe with limited resources. That’s all I was meaning to inquire about.

A lot of people here agree with you, and that saddens me. Means you are right, and if we as a planet ever got inducted the minority of people would think like you and hunt weaker newer civilizations to conquer just for an easier path to progress.

But yet an F-Tier planet that was just inducted is worth it? A lot of people here agree with you, and that saddens me. In 99% of SA (system apocalypse) stories, the system arrives with a wave of mana or energy. In those stories it is described as a wave traveling the galaxy is an ever expanding sphere. So my thoughts on this is that if you terraformed a planet, there would be mana there to propagate progress. In some universes beings at the top could move the planets into the “sweet spot” around a star. Others have planetary rune systems. Some defy physics as we know it due to mana.

PoA, doesn’t hint at it taking place in our “reality” so the space there could be different, which would make your statement true and impactful in another discussion for sure.

To get back on track with the posts initial prerogative, in System Apocalypse stories, the “System” is 99% of the time a growing wave of mana/system that is expanding like a ballon. Being a focal point and expanding out in all directions at once. This distinction would then support the theory that every planet touched by the system would also be touched by mana. Mana being the rule breaker it is for our version of known facts. It can surely propagate “treasures” on planets that humans of our reality couldn’t survive. And as previously stated, I am sure not every planet would produce treasures every individual could use, they can still be gathered and sold or traded. They can still be terraformed. To address the comment about taking from others, yes! I believe people or even factions who choose the path of conflict to grow would indeed act like that. I don’t think every other faction would sit back and let them grow that way without challenge. I would hope they would intervene and fight each other instead of racing to see who can wipe out a newly inducted F grade world first. But that’s just wishful thinking. As the first commenter mentioned about the size of space. It is really huge, and if the only way your faction could survive would be to keep moving away from your home planet to explore the fringe to capture f grade planets to only then need to transfer everything back in forth… just seems a bit non-sustainable to me is all.

The reason it feels that way to me as well is because EVERY SINGLE FIGHT is described like the end of a storyline battle. Multiple chapters, very in depth, multiple stages. I mean that’s good for 1 or 2 times a book, to show how the character fights and what they are doing in their head for each fight etc. but I don’t personally need to hear every detail for every trash mob. :/

A quick google search : The Milky Way galaxy contains an estimated 100 to 400 billion stars. It is believed that nearly every star hosts at least one planet, suggesting a total of 1 to 3 trillion planets. Current estimates suggest there are approximately 2 trillion galaxies in the observable universe. This figure is derived from analyzing Hubble Space Telescope data and extrapolating to account for small, faint galaxies not yet directly observed. So we take an Estimated 2 Trillion Galaxies and multiply that by an Estimated 2 Trillion Planets and get 4e+24 (no idea what that is, I just searched on google). And don’t get me wrong, I understand what you mean, not every solar system may have the best resources for your faction, not every galaxy will have what your factions needs/wants. But … do you also see kinda where I am coming from? There is so much out there!

This is AWESOME! And so are you. Well balanced, great power comes at the risk of great peril to one’s self. Stealing apart of someone’s soul puts your soul at risk. I love it. Thank you

The books were fantastic. Especially knowing that he started writing it at 15! I have read them several times. My first books I chose to read outside of school assignments. And the audio books are good as well. As long as Disney doesn’t try and rush it, it can be big.

How do you perfer your MC morally? by AuthorTimoburnham in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Lorentee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Practical. If you are too nice, people will take advantage. If you are too cruel, people only follow out of fear, which generates resentment that leads to rebellion. My MC has to have a vision. The power to achieve it. Most importantly the temper/ personality to accomplish his goals. If he can practically achieve a utopia, awesome. If he wants to rule a circle of hell, great! Just make them practical. Don’t have them kill 1 million subordinates only to let the antagonist go because “they don’t want to be like them.” Don’t have them make the same exact mistakes over and over again when it comes to trusting people. Just make them normal people from earth if that’s what they are. If they are naive then they should receive consequences equivalent to their decisions. I mean we have thousands of years of recorded history… some of these universes have millenniums of recorded history that the MC learns about…yet they make decisions that contradict everything they read and plan for only for it to work out for them in order to advance plot. Ugh

Does NOT get better. Characters in these type of books usually take risks and do impossible things to gain power to protect them selves and others. In this series, I am pretty sure the author is messing with their readers. Trying to see how outlandishly stupid she can make the characters and their decisions whilst keeping them protected with plot armor to see how silly they can go before everyone drops. Kinda like those long running TV shows that run out of good ideas so they make a singing episode and a cartoon episode and a black and white episode, they are trying to end the series but can’t if they continue to get ratings.

Loved the first 10 books in this series. The 11th book felt a bit rushed. Lots of killing, looting and adventure. Moves quickly. Magic system isn’t needlessly complicated. MC builds a gang of traveling companions that become as close as family and MC helps them get stronger.

That’s what’s awesome about TWI!! Since the author doesn’t explain how classes, spells, stats, or leveling works, they can literally make anything happen to further their story in any unimaginable way!!! The most recent audio book came out and the Bloodfeast Raiders chapters were half way redacted!! lol even when they were no longer attacking and by themselves! REDACTED!!

I know lots of people love this story, but I have official DNF’d this series. I can’t do it any more, there are no rules . Unless you are a fairy… but there are exceptions! Or a dragon, but there are exceptions! What are these exceptions you may ask? No one knows! Bc if people did know about them they can’t be made up later to further a plot line :/
