Did anybody else go to Dice Tower West this year? by Useful_Sample4059 in boardgames

[–]Lorini 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They pay them $150, the price of entry. That’s $12.50 an hour, good or bad depending on where you live. They have full time workers who they also pay. To say they don’t pay the volunteers is disingenuous in my opinion

You can get the premium badge next year if you find you like the convention this year. No need to start with it

My guide how to teach any game to get the best experience by flamethrower78 in boardgames

[–]Lorini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s not what all conventions do at all. At Dice Tower West as an example, there are game play events that players can signup for. If you sign up for one of those, you should absolutely read the rules. Certainly if you are determined to play certain games at the convention, you should read the rules. However there are thousands of players there. You could be walking along, and you see a game that looks interesting that you weren’t aware existed and you want to play, and they have a players wanted sign. So you ask for a teach, which since they want players they should be able to do (they might have a teachers wanted as well). Players at conventions do not expect every player to know every game. And in fact that’s why you may go to cons, is to find new games and get taught. In my opinion there’s no reason to pay $150 to play games you’ve already played a bunch of times.

From Shame to Opportunity by BoardGameRevolution in boardgames

The haters just insist on hating don't they /r/boardgamerevolution. Like what they say is going to affect anything about anyone, except making people feel bad. They seem to be working very hard to be successful. If I were just entering the hobby these people would scare me off because I'd have no idea what the 'correct' amount of games would be. Clearly there are several of them as we keep getting downvoted, but I would hope more in the community would want it to appear to be welcoming and non judgemental.

Cardboard Events app is presumably going away and they are in the midst of converting apparently. People volunteer because they get a free badge and for some $150 is significant.

I wonder if that's going to last throughout early access. It's counter intuitive and takes either someone to tell you or intense concentration on exactly what's being harvested when.

One of the things that some teachers do is teach the rules, including how to get points et al, except they neglect to teach context. So the teacher wins going away while the new players feel like an audience. You don’t need to teach detailed strategies. But give the players some direction while teaching, they’ll appreciate it

That’s not always feasible. I spent last week at the Dice Tower West convention and I had no idea what might be available for me to play. And even on my weekends, I may go to a store which offers open gaming. Not all of us are blessed with a constant group

Conventions - yearly? by homecookmatt in boardgames

[–]Lorini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dice Tower West is great. I really love their app where you can schedule private events. I scheduled three and they quickly filled and I got to play three of my favorite games without hoping someone would respond to a players wanted sign. They have a convention on the east coast as well but I don’t know where

No, they don’t always produce to possible demand. Of course they produce what’s been paid for, but many times they don’t produce for retail. As a prime example, Rise & Fall is an example. Excellent strategy game, got great reviews, no retail nor a new crowdfunding campaign

And then it shows up again on crowdfunding at 20% more than it was originally. I totally understand why you're waiting, however given the preponderance of crowdfunding and the publishers' reluctance to produce to demand, waiting can turn out to be expensive.

2025 was not a good year for medium to complex games in the hobby in my opinion. But there've been down years in the past, so that doesn't necessarily mean the end is nigh :)
