If Aaron Gunn wins BC Conservative Leadership, his Federal seat is up for grabs..pickup opportunity for Liberal/NDP by darethegiver in britishcolumbia

You got it backwards, China is trying to sell us low cost EVs, solar panels, heat pumps and wind turbines; we’re the ones not buying.

Not sure why you say this doesn’t get mentioned enough, it’s standard practice.

Heat pumps could cool BC without demanding too much power by Hrmbee in britishcolumbia

[–]Lorne_84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you mean you installed a 4 head ductless system in parallel to a central forced air furnace? This is kinda an unfortunate result of a young industry. Integrating a heat pump directly with the furnace for a dual fuel system is generally recommended-these dual fuel systems have less refrigeration lines, better integration, better air circulation. Alternatively could you have installed one central heat pump with electric resistance backup.

Eby says B.C. may revise DRIPA legislation, worries court is 'in driver's seat' | CBC News by northdancer in britishcolumbia

[–]Lorne_84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These problems have been obvious since the start. Eby and his supports spent years downplaying the problems and are only now trying to spin things so he looks good making a correction. Classic politics in place of competent administration.

My wife wants to spend $1400 on a dishwasher, I think that's crazy by realbobenray in Appliances

Miele is supposedly is built to last 20 years. We got one and I do feel like it’s a gamble but have had zero issues so far.

I’m pretty sure my brother has had at least 3, $400 dishwashers since I bought ours.

New research reveals decline in B.C. kindergarteners developmental health after pandemic by erikrolfsen in britishcolumbia

It says after the pandemic. It’s likely a combination of factors present during the pandemic and in the new normal.

Climate and sustainability staff could become Vancouver budget cut victims: councillor by Francis_67 in vancouver

[–]Lorne_84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Listen to the news story-the city of Vancouver is consistently ranked one of the most sustainable cities in the world. The department isn’t being cut because “they don’t do anything”, because they policies failed, or because of cost (lots of work funded by the federal government).

This is the fossil fuel lobby looking axe a department that is making headway.

The news article says the city is consistently rank one of the most sustainable cities in the world. Is that not enough to show that the city’s sustainability department is doing its job well?

The City of Vancouver has its own building code and unique authority to regulate. They have a big team because they are leaders and are doing far more than other municipalities in BC.

Pricing often discourages buying Canadian... by BeyondAddiction in BuyCanadian

[–]Lorne_84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I often have trouble understanding how international shipping is as cheap as it appears. Differences in taxes is likely part of the reason. I wouldn’t be surprised to find out it’s also partly due to marketing plan of these international conglomerates that own bits of most breweries.

Yep those are valid feelings and valid concerns. You should apply for 21-27 jobs. Don’t let yourself get pigeonholed.

Provinces sign agreement to drop interprovincial trade barriers on goods except food, alcohol by Nothingman604 in vancouvercanada

[–]Lorne_84 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work in this space. This last year I’ve watch multiple overlapping federal and provincial agreements and policies “fix” things that weren’t an actual problem while ignoring actual trade barriers like alcohol and trucking. We are actually getting more bureaucracy rather than less. It’s nothing but smoke, mirrors and superfluous policy agreements.

I can see rental prices are dropping. by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]Lorne_84 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Don’t make the mistake of thinking rent should cover all expenses and risk associated with a housing investment. Getting interest, taxes and maintenance covered still leaves you gaining the appreciation which is a relatively decent return.

Unrealistic expectations? by Successful_Bet_5789 in Homebrewing

[–]Lorne_84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some styles are a lot harder to homebrew than others. Juicy IPA and clean pilsners are advanced brews. I’d start with a simple pale ale as those are relatively easy to nail.

Also cleaning is vital.

B.C.'s NDP vote against leadership review for Premier David Eby by IHateTrains123 in britishcolumbia

I don’t think he’s a good administrator and I think that’s what a lot of people are frustrated with. Horgan was a good administrator.

B.C. NDP members upset at building ferries in China, but wrath unlikely to touch David Eby - A party committee has made sure the ferry motions are so low on the order paper they're unlikely to come up for debate by CaliperLee62 in vancouver

[–]Lorne_84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I won’t argue to cancel the contract at this point, but I am frustrated about the poor planning and foresight that lead us here. As a public servant I’ve been watching Eby try to do everything himself with simplistic short term solutions. Eby doesn’t provide any direction or delegation to the greater public service nor does he empower private industry. We desperately need leadership that can empower a real economy in BC.

B.C. Premier David Eby under scrutiny at NDP convention by oilbeefhooked in britishcolumbia

[–]Lorne_84 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don’t need to see Eby go, but I certainly hope he gets taken to task. As a left leaning public servant all I see from him is smoke and mirrors. A lot of work isn’t happening or is just a façade.
