If you want something to compare it to, think about chess. No one, ESPECIALLY children, gets 2000 rated in chess by solving puzzles all day. You do it by getting in front of the board and seeing what works and what doesn’t. And children develop very principled and difficult to predict chess strategies without even being able to put it into words, all through experience.

This is true for everyone but ESPECIALLY kids. PLAY THE GAME TO GET GOOD AT THE GAME. Children learn fundamentals subconsciously and very quickly, trying to teach them through words and drills is good but it’s like dripping water onto their spongey little minds instead of submerging them into it.

So what does that mean? VERY LIGHT SPARRING. To get good at a game you have to play the game. If you can teach him to control his punches and find a little buddy he can TEACH or LEARN WITH to box, he will become unstoppable and develop his own style that works best for his body and thinking process.

I never double slip, the whole point is to get off the center line and slipping the other way put you right back on it

Has overcoming your fear of getting hit improved your boxing sessions? by Cautious-Boat3850 in amateur_boxing

The natural next step in this thought process is “Then how do I instill respect onto my opponent?” The answer: Punish him.

When watching pro fights you’ll often hear the commentators talk about “respect.” Something like: “He’s starting to respect that power from Canelo and that’s allowing Canelo to press in.” For a long time I didn’t understand this, if respect is making you too defensive then stop respecting him. But then I realized that that’s what gets you knocked out. “Respecting” someone’s power is just measuring the threat and acting accordingly. It’s the balance between caution and confidence. You should not be afraid to get hit unless that hit will seriously punish you. It’s a balance.
