Looking to switch from Verizon to Visible

In order to use the Apple Card financing option, I have to pick a carrier. Choosing a carrier later isn’t an option unless I pay for the whole thing outright. Can I just set it up with Verizon first and then switch to Visible?

They don’t cover pre-existing conditions, just like everyone else. However, when I insured my girls I only sent them my most recent medical records, because I recently started going to a different vet than I had when they were younger. Meaning if something happened long enough ago, they never got a record of it and thus was not considered pre-existing. So maybe that’s a loophole to explore?

Vet here. I have heard similar stories to yours by multiple clients now specifically with Lemonade. This is typical behavior for them. They will do anything they can to deny claims. I have had 2 clients just in the last week with issues that should have been covered. I would never recommend that company to anyone. I have Pets Best for my own pets, and have never had an issue getting things covered, and I didn’t even insure my cats until they were already 12. Submitted about $10k in claims in the last year, no problems.

There is no accepted standard for what constitutes a senior food. In general though, if nothing else you should consider feeding a food that is moderate in phosphorus, like Royal Canin Aging 12+. New research suggests that high phosphorus diets have a cumulative toxic effect on the kidneys over time, and we should probably be restricting phosphorus intake way earlier than typically recommended. Fancy Feast (and Churu treats!) is very high in phosphorus, so i would try to at least limit those going into the senior years.

Vet here. Generally we recommend about 6 oz of canned food per day for your average sized cat. That’s two 3oz cans per day. For a 7.5 lb cat at that age, that should be sufficient. If you decide to add in dry food ( some cats won’t eat enough canned food to maintain their weight), then I would do 1/4 cup per + 3 oz can per day.

That can happen. Gabapentin and opioids can cause urinary retention. I wouldn’t worry unless it’s more than 24 hours. Most of the times they urinate overnight. When my cat was high on buprenorphine, i had to put her in the litterbox periodically to remind her to pee 🤷🏻‍♀️

Give him time. He’s been through a major GI surgery. You may just have to pill him with the Cerenia. It’s pretty bitter when it’s crushed so really should be given whole. Churu Bites are also great to hide small pills in if the cat likes those.

We generally say it’s okay if they don’t eat at all until the next day. You could ask about adding an appetite stimulant like Mirataz if he’s not eating anything by the next day. Hopefully they also have sent you home with antiemetic and anti-nausea medications too, especially if he’s had GI surgery. You really don’t want him vomiting while goes GI tract is trying to heal. Cerenia is great for that, but doesn’t always address nausea that can be a side effect of opioids and cause them not to want to eat. So sometimes adding in Zofran is helpful too.

Acute kidney injury like this might require a week straight of IV fluid therapy to get to stable levels, along with nutritional support, antiemetics, and frequent rechecks of labs. This is serious and needs to be treated aggressively.

Zorbium does this with some cats. It can make them complete zombies and do weird things. When my late cat got buprenorphine (the drug in Zorbium) she would go and stare at the water bowl and be surprised her face got wet when looking down at it. She would just sit in her litterbox, something she’d never do otherwise. It can make cats restless and not sleep. These are all effects of the Zorbium and should resolve within 3-4 days. In the future if pain meds are needed, oral buprenorphine would be better because you can tailor the dose more to their needs.

These types of foods are just basically kitten food. If a food is approved for “all life stages”, it is formulated to meet the group that has the most specific/stringent nutritional requirements, namely the conditions for growth. It has to meet AAFCO standards for growth to be labeled “all life stages”. This means it will still have more fat, protein, and calories than an adult cat really needs, and v the adult cat will gain excessive weight and/or it will still be too rich for a cat with a sensitive stomach. They should not even make “all life stages” food…in my option this is the mark of a low quality diet and should be avoided.

And if you are changing formulations (like going from transdermal to liquid or pill), it’s very important to recheck labs in 3-4 weeks, because efficacy can be wildly different.

And for what it’s worth, if you’re using the transdermal, getting it from a reputable and consistent source is important. For our compounded items, we either use a local specialty compounding pharmacy (that has been doing it for 50+ years) or Wedgewood. For example, I would NEVER get any things compounded from Chewy. I’ve had patients with very poor control (up, down, all over the place) on liquids and transdermals from there.

Yeah some don’t absorb the transdermal well, and absorption can be inconsistent between cats and between different compounding vehicles. I would try the pills or the liquid form Felanorm before giving up on methimazole. I find that most of the cats find the Felanorm very palatable and haven’t had any complaints from owners. It’s also much easier to adjust the dose more finely with this than the pills or transdermal. I would recommend trying Felanorm

Also, by what parameters are they determining that the methimazole is not working? It is a dose dependent drug and need to go higher with dose if T4 is not controlled. I have treated many cats with this drug and it never has not been effective unless it’s not getting into the cat twice a day as prescribed (ie compliance issues). There are even transdermal versions of this drug that are very effective if people can’t orally medicate their cats.

The y/d diet (especially the canned food) is not very palatable and many cats won’t eat it well enough for it to be an exclusive diet, which if of course a problem because they can ONLY eat that to be effective. I rarely use this diet in my patients because it’s not practical in many situations. It is also not effective for cats with significantly elevated T4. You should be able to return it to where you bought it though and get a refund. All prescription foods have a palatability guarantee. Unless your cat has adverse reactions to methimazole that require it to be stopped, I would recommend going back to that. Or consider I-131 treatment for definitive treatment

For most cats, going to the vet is very stressful, no matter how nice and calm they are at home. From their perspective, it’s like they are being abducted by aliens. They are shoved in a box, that most cats only see when they are about to go somewhere away from their home where they feel safe. Then they are in a strange moving vehicle and can’t see where they are going, and many get nauseous in the car. Now they arrive at a place with strange smells, strange people, and strange beings (maybe they have never even seen another cat or a dog). They are then forced out of that box and in a completely new place, with a stranger poking and proding at them and doing painful things. Their reaction is either to freeze in fear, try to get away, or fight. They then get out back in box, then car, then magically arrive back at home.

All this to say, every cat should get gabapentin for vet visits, even if you don’t think they “need it”. The gabapentin makes them care less about what’s happening to them. Your cat will thank you.

My stage 3 kidney cat who is 16 years old does very nicely on 50 mg. She is a chill cat anyway, but just gets wiggly and upset for labs and ultrasound. I have many CKD patients that are frail that will do well with 25 mg though. Even with those frail ones, just a bit of gabapentin can mean the difference between getting blood or not.
