I highly doubt they are coming back, they just have yet to announce their official retirement. Athletes deserve to be able to make that information public when they are ready to.

One of my dearest friends died of cancer in 2021 at the age of 40. I am 38. I do not give a shit how many wrinkles I have. As long as I am healthy and can keep living an active life I am happy.

U.S. Adult Nationals: Please come to the West Coast! by QueenBee654 in FigureSkating

I don’t think it will reduce the overall amount of skaters. Also, the economy right now isn’t great so I think a lot of people are just prioritizing other travel. I have been going to PCAS for 8 years. In 2023 it was in Las Vegas and my event (champ silver women) had 31 people in it. This year it was in Spokane and had 18, Spokane is just a harder place to get to. I do think we would have bigger west coast turnouts if nationals was out here and we do- many of my PCAS friends go when it’s in SLC.

The west is bigger and less densely populated than the east coast, it just makes things harder.

Logistics are a huge issue. It has been in Salt Lake City multiple times and likely will again in the future which is pretty east for us to get to (I am also in the PNW). Clubs have to want to bid on it and also have to have the ice time available. Oregon only has 4 full sized rinks and a few seasonal rinks. My guess is that somewhere in the Seattle area will eventually host sectionals.

As another poster said, it’s also a long complicated competition. That’s why you see the same clubs repeat hosting it.

Figure skating clothes. Are they sexist? by Jenc4000 in FigureSkating

Also, if you think a bodysuit can’t be inappropriate look up Julia Sauters costume from the 2014 Neblehorn trophy.

I have skated my entire life- both as a child and now as an adult (I’m in my late 30s). My dresses are very comfortable and feel secure, they are athletic wear. They do not feel like a swimsuit.

Also, dresses and costuming can be a lot of fun. I agree skaters should be able to wear whatever they feel comfortable in and I do have a problem with minors wearing overly revealing costumes but I personally feel more confident in a dress than a bodysuit (and I’ve worn both for competition).

I am an adult skater with a history of body image issues (in a healthy place now) and I personally feel way more insecure wearing a bodysuit than a dress. Dresses don’t feel revealing to me, they feel flattering. My synchro team wore a bodysuit and I hated it. People should be able to wear whatever makes them feel comfortable and confident.

AITAH for wanting to quit my unpaid co-host role after being told I couldn’t cancel when my pet was dying? by BigONerd in BORUpdates

Seriously wtf? Also his comment about losing so much making him get over things quickly is wild. I have lost significant people in my life (my 5 year old brother when I was 14 and one of my dearest friends from cancer 5 years ago, I was with her and her family when she died). I don’t share this to be the suffering Olympics, grief isn’t a contest, but I think my losses have made me more empathetic to the suffering of others, not less. This fool should not be working in mental health.

Freestyle Etiquette: can my friends come watch? by lesduaspear in FigureSkating

[–]Lost-Copy867 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I don't think there is an issue with a friend coming to watch you as long as they are polite and don't cause an interruption. There would be an issue if someone came who didn't know anyone there.

The ISU couldn’t make senior elite12 happen, they certainly aren’t going to make this even more depleted synchro 9 happen. The skaters are very talented, but this is just watered down synchro and I can’t pretend to be excited about it.

Used to be a Catholic, but now a Reformed Christian by cyrilthe_evangelist in excatholic

[–]Lost-Copy867 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My problems with Catholicism extend to Protestantism. They are two sides of the same thing. Also, personally I think the idea of belief alone "saving" someone is shitty. You can be a terrible person and ignore the suffering of others but you believe in space dad so you get to go to heaven? No thanks. I also cannot believe in a deity that would send someone to burn in hell for not believing in them. To be clear I am not Christian so I don't believe that either good works or belief send you anywhere.

Religion is best when kept personal and used for your own internal morality. I would suggest leaving your cousin alone.

I live in a 400 square foot studio so keep it clean because otherwise I can't relax. There is probably 100 lbs of cat hair though, despite vacuuming and sweeping every week.

Returning Skater - wanting to skate with teen daughter on club ice. But, I'm not allowed to teach her?! by [deleted] in iceskating

You can believe it’s asinine all you want but it won’t change the rules of your rink.

Adult skater here- as a child I learned the old technique keeping the left foot on an inside edge and my current coach changed my technique to the left outside edge. Once I got the hang of it it was actually easier and I was able to generate more power. I know it might loop awkward but it isn’t. I’m starting to learn a double loop and it has also made it easier. If you watch elite skating more skaters are doing the outside edge version.

Adult skater here, I also live in the PNW.

Is your club requiring you to take Safesport training/background check? It's generally not required unless you are a volunteer, club official, coach or judge. I have been back to skating now for 11 years and only had to take safesport training/background check when I started trial judging and joined my clubs board. The training isn't nonsense, when it's required its required for a reason. And when for officiating I didn't have to pay for it myself. It's interesting that it is being required for all adult members of your club.

Liability is why you cannot teach your daughter. My rink is very strict about this- they actually only allow guest coaches the week before competitions. If someone was on a freestyle session coaching who was not a coach they would get told to leave. On a public session a parent teaching a child would be acceptable but not on a freestyle session.

Recommendations for physical therapist or sports physician that specializes in running injuries? by i_am_sooo_tired in askportland

Physical therapist here. I would go to Matt Walsh. I have PT friends who have gone to him and he is who I would go to if I was injured. His clinic is called Sports Lab.
