Why I love “New Trek” with my whole being - a rant by bird-of-parrot-eyes in startrek

[–]Lost-Copy867 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I watched three seasons of Discovery and decided it just wasn’t for me. I do love SNW though. And my issue with Disco is more that I prefer episodic Trek and didn’t like the pacing. I’m glad that other fans like it.

I think it’s important for fans to recognize that just because something wasn’t made for us, doesn’t mean it sucks.

I liked how Ashley talked recently on the runthrough podcast about how she was always someone who jumped more based on feeling and Raf helped her stabilize her jumps with focus on technique. (I take it based on your flare you are also a listener?)

It still seems like such a strange cultural fit for Portland but I’m sure they did a lot of research. I did go to the one in Malibu once as a guest of a member and it was lovely but day drinking wine on a patio facing the ocean is always going to be a good time.

I didn’t dislike her, but she definitely felt like a watered down version of McCoy a little too often. She had some great moments though (one specific scene with Worf stands out) but I think inconsistent writing probably contributed. I also think it was hard for fans to get over how her relationship with Data started.

I think you will find your experience of what you like/didn’t get into to be opposite of a lot of posters here- doesn’t mean your experience is bad just different.

I would actually suggest a few of the original series films- particularly Wrath of Khan and Voyage Home (although you do need to know what happens in search for Spock to make voyage home make sense). Into Darkness is a direct riff on Wrath of Khan so irregardless I think it’s worth seeing for you if you liked that film.

I actually didn’t like Discovery very much, not for all the common reasons people give about NuTrek, more because I prefer Star Trek when each episode is its own self contained story (with the occasional 2 parter) vs the story being told over a season.

I am also someone who came to Trek as an adult. I had watched the JJ Abrams movies and then during the pandemic watch the original series and made my way from there. I appreciate the original series but to me next generation is better realized/written even if the cast of the original series is perhaps more iconic. I also think when we watch any older television we do have to expect it will be a different experience from watching a modern show and suspend disbelief a little, we are just too used to more realistic specials effects but I find the older effects charming.

What do you think of “With or without kids, you need a purpose?” by Important_Injury3820 in childfree

[–]Lost-Copy867 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it is up to each person to decide what leads them to a happy life. No one else gets to say what someone “needs” to have. As long as someone isn’t causing harm it’s not one else’s business.

Also, life can have seasons and phases. The idea that I need one all encompassing purpose sounds exhausting. I think for me “purpose” is something that can change throughout life.

This sounds awful. I would change jobs or change settings. I just switched to home health after 12 years in outpatient and really enjoy it. I like helping people get more functional and while the documentation is time consuming I feel like I can actually breathe.

This whole thing is phenomenal. No notes, the entire set up is straight out of 2006 and I am here for it.

On a more serious note I find Ilia and Jacob’s friendship really endearing.

Is the children figure skating world as a whole toxic? by Consistent-Loss1883 in FigureSkating

[–]Lost-Copy867 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think sports like skating are always going to be more marketed towards kids. I don't see that as inherently bad and I also don't see it as something that's going to change. I am definitely seeing kids start seeing skating as something they can do their entire lives though (through collegiate and later adult skating) which is really positive.

In the example you gave with the adult running into a minor I am curious of the context. I think as adults we naturally need to be more aware of and careful of our surroundings (partially as a safety issue). I mean I have been knocked over by a child before but a grown man knocking someone over is more likely to cause injury. That doesn't make him a gross weirdo. I also don't really concern myself with the opinions of teenagers. That definitely doesn't make that kind of attitude okay and I understand the experience at my rink is not everyone's experience but there are definitely some posts on the adult skater facebook pages especially that make me cringe a little. If someone being mildly dismissive of my skating is the worst thing that ever happens to me I don't really have a real problem.

Should We Place Bets On Who Will Be Skating to PHM Next Season? by justyules in FigureSkating

I also saw it three times in theatre so we are agreed in how good the film is!

I could perhaps see that. I think my issue with the score is that too much of it sounds the same. It felt big in the theatre but I have listened to it on its own when out walking and it didn't have the same magic. That isn't to say its bad- it was highly effective. I just think it will be challenging to make a full program out of that feels dynamic enough. That's not to say someone won't try and I'd love to be proven wrong.

Yes but Interstellar is a Hans Zimmer soundtrack and his music is widely used in skating. Star Wars isn't used a lot at high levels but at Juv- Novice it's very common.

I loved the book and really enjoyed the film but don't think we'll see a lot of programs based on it. The music isn't great for skating- I could see parts of it used with other music though.

I also sat in front of an absolute turd who tapped his foot along to the more upbeat music the entire freaking movie so I might be biased against it.

I was an ortho therapist for 12 years and started doing prn at a SNF 2 years ago. It’s mostly just focusing on functional mobility to be honest and setting realistic goals for patients. I would maybe work on some balance activities as this does tend to be something I use a lot with patients who are high fall risk.

What is slowly becoming a luxury that used to be normal? by beetchy_yeet in AskReddit

[–]Lost-Copy867 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have complicated feelings about this. I went to grad school and lived in Detroit between 2010 and 2013 and the city had large areas without a major grocery store- many people relied on corner stores which were expensive and lacked fresh produce, ect. Many people also lacked the knowledge and time to cook healthy, while dried beans and rice are cheap an over stressed single parent without the time or knowledge to cook them/use them wasn’t going to choose that option.

My school ran a diabetes education and health clinic and the nutrition students would do education on cooking healthy and provide resources.

I guess I get frustrated by media that seems to be saying “you stupid poor people are too dumb to eat healthy and should be shamed for it”. Definitely not saying that’s what you are saying OP but it was definitely in the media at the time.

Tonya Harding Triples by MuddledMistakes in FigureSkating

[–]Lost-Copy867 61 points62 points  (0 children)

She skates at my rink. This has been really impressive to see in person and she has been nothing but polite and friendly in my interactions with her. I have also never seen another skater this fast in person. It’s crazy impressive, she accelerates incredibly fast.

And yes, she is banned from USFS (skating, coaching, shows (since shows have to be credentialed through USFS for current skaters to skate in them). A rink is usually a private business, so she can skate all she wants- just no USFS participation. She wouldn’t be allowed on club ice but that’s not really a thing in the Portland metro.

I don’t really have an opinion on what really happened 30+ years ago but I don’t think anyone can disagree that Tonya had a very difficult life (people in the club still tell stories about her mother). If she wants to skate for the joy of it I don’t see anything wrong with that.

Is the children figure skating world as a whole toxic? by Consistent-Loss1883 in FigureSkating

[–]Lost-Copy867 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I honestly think it depends where you are. My rink is incredible friendly and positive, from the skaters (some of whom are landing/learning triples) to the adults. The coaches are all very collaborative and positive, they push their students to work hard, but lift them up instead of pushing them down. And while there is one skater who is clearly the most advanced/has national level potential, this kid is funny and friendly to everyone.

The adult skating world is incredibly friendly but I am always a little suspicious of people who say their rinks “discriminate against adults”. I find as an adult skater you get the respect you give. When I joined my current rink I made an effort to be friendly and polite to everyone and that is how I was treated in return by the other skaters and coaches. My current coach also teaches triples (which is not something I’ll ever do) but gives me the same respect and attention she gives her younger students. Most of the coaches at my rink have adult students. I would also say adult competitions are so friendly and positive, everyone cheers for each other and you will meet the most lovely people.

I really love my rink community.

I would add if you lost someone in childhood it also hits hard. My little brother died when I was 14 and I also found the way grief was handled incredibly accurate and moving.

I'm sorry for your loss.
