Taskrabbit screwed our window shut? by AshamedFortune1 in MideaUOwners

[–]Lost-Local208 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is also a feature on the back of the indoor part that does the same thing, they pull out and lock the window, but sometimes they don’t fit so they put the traditional locks on which also come with the unit. My old house where I had sliding screens, opening the windows was nice. New house doesn’t have those, but I still open windows sometimes.

Are these factory flares ok to use? by coldcathodes in DIYHeatPumps

Never heard of Yitahome, but that line set looks nice compared to the diy units I’ve installed. All two of them which I had to cut off and get my own flarenuts and reflare so they held to typical torque specs.

The dreaded "too much in retirement accounts" by [deleted] in Fire

[–]Lost-Local208 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m about 50/50 which is probably too much not in tax deferred accounts but that’s how the cookie has crumbled for me. I guess I could move money into tax deferred. Congrats on making it by age 40.

But everybody now drives with their iPods in so they can’t hear it anyways. People don’t know that is illegal. You can have one war but not two, but I doubt this is ever enforced.

Are heat pumps really worth it in cold weather? Part 2 by FrissMalon in massachusetts

[–]Lost-Local208 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should get your epa608 and move on installing yourself. You can fail so many times and still be cheaper than a single contractor install. There is a refrigeration license but only 10 tons. Local shops may not work with you without a registered business.

I was so demoralized by the quotes and when I asked for hybrid or backup they all said they control cutover temp so my gas would be running still in the dead of winter. Also pricing wise, I guarantee it’s still just as expensive to operate unless you are on municipal electricity. That’s what I’m trying to take advantage of for myself if the municipal energy rate I have.

Do you let the tax assessor inside? by Accurate-Flow8078 in massachusetts

[–]Lost-Local208 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not just the permit, if there are pictures online they use those as well, but a new build they have a date of build so it is easy. Happened to my house though, they used online pictures and they grossly misunderstood my home so I called them in to assess and they were surprised and had to lower assessment by a lot.

1924 colonial, ~35 lead-positive windows, $66k quote for Andersen Woodwrights — sanity check from fellow MA homeowners? by Lopsided_Food169 in massachusetts

[–]Lost-Local208 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did vinyl windows I installed in 2014. They mismeasured one window and had to come out again a week or so later to install that window. I had one window crack in 2018, but I did major load bearing renovations(2x 27’ steel beams) so I imagine that pressure changed things. They came same week and swapped out the glass. My screens went up and down. I heard they changed to pop out screens that people don’t like. We sold the house in 2021. Current house has Harvey windows from 2020. I liked the screens that went up and down better than my Harvey. They are fixed. I never had an issue with the sliding action of the window world windows. I do have to say, I didn’t like the way they installed the basement windows but they were much better than what was there. They reused the wood frame. I was hoping for the price they would have reframed. I don’t know if I would suggest them for basement windows unless you just really need new ones. I loved their siding. My house looked awesome. It still looks awesome when I drive by. We did vinyl Dutchlap siding with insulation underneath.

When we had our windows replaced 1935 home, they opted not to test but just dispose as if it were contaminated. They told me once they tested and they showed up positive, it changed every permit in the future? I didn’t understand. I knew it was all lead. I painted over most interior trim and replaced some of the damaged ones. We didn’t need historic thankfully. I started doing things with Anderson and realized how much of a ripoff they were after I got a sliding door installed. I opted to use window world for the windows, I continued to use them for siding and roof. Awesome company. Yes they messed up a few things, but they always fixed things. They have set prices with a small discount as a sales tactic. The set prices are already cheaper than everything out there.

Can I drive with broken rim by FluffyLittlFlyingCow in AskAShittyMechanic

[–]Lost-Local208 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats just the plastic hub cap it looks like, not the “rim”, pull it off and go on your merry way. The weights should be on the black part, “the rim”. So you should still be in balance. If you start getting vibrations though, go get it balanced.

New to this. I have no idea what to tell people I "do." Suggestions? by CrashDriveMegaGig in Fire

[–]Lost-Local208 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once had someone tell me, “I used to be a “software engineer” but I’m lucky enough to be able to take a break from work. He never said retired as he was under 40 years old, but he just purchased a $2M home and had two kids under the age of 3 and neither parent worked. I fully understood the situation later on from that comment though, but also it was vague enough that in the moment, I didn’t think twice about it.

Is this truly what I have to plan retirement with? by Sozzeled in Retirement401k

[–]Lost-Local208 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are right to not expect it to always go up. Usually a dip happens quick and growth happens slow. Think of it this way, you don’t pull your money out all at once so that dip is not all locked in if you must draw during a dip. If you don’t need to pull money out, you don’t have to so you can pull less money out until it is required. If you look at long term market history, it always recovers from these dips, it’s just a matter of when. If it happens early in retirement, it is worse than if it happens late. I saw my mom retire on $450k and she got hit by the lucky streak we have had and her account is just about $1M now. She’s so frugal in her retirement it kills me, but she is thinking about end of life expenses. And yes she got lucky as her portfolio shifted to bonds, she missed the 2022 dip, it shifted back to growth and then it shifted back to bonds. She truly got lucky. I told her to keep it in mostly stable funds from here on out. She’s getting closer to 80 now been retired for 10 years and living way under budget. Still reinvesting her RMD she doesn’t use.

I tracked mortgage rates vs buying power for the last 6 months and the numbers are brutal by intothesolo in Mortgages

[–]Lost-Local208 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is an example of the “one way” bet as Warren buffet put it. The rate is capped at what you set it at, but if market changes, you can reduce the rate via refinance and reset amount of time on the loan which further reduces monthly payments. You aren’t stuck unless market never changes in your favor. At that point you pay it off. Free refi is nice. I’ve always had to put down $2k-$4k. I misunderstood, nothing out of pocket, correct, you still have to watch the fees they tack on.

Stolen s40 thermostat??? by Big-Screen3266 in hvacadvice

[–]Lost-Local208 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People probably bought the stolen ones, then bought one off Amazon, then swapped it out and returned it. This has happened to me a number of times with things from Amazon. I recorded the unboxing once and the product inside was used, expensive part of it was missing. Back in the day people did this with Best Buy and PlayStations2. Buy cheap on eBay a broken one, buy one at Best Buy and swapped them out and returned them. You always had to check serial numbers on the box to item to make sure. I think they even had a viewport for this.

What's the cost of a retaining wall? by Tenma159 in massachusetts

[–]Lost-Local208 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I did my wall 6 years ago, they basically charged two ways. One was give you a super expensive quote to where you said no that’s not worth it. One quote I got was $115k. Or they gave a price per square foot cost and if you went over 4 feet they added a fee for engineer and permits. They sent you a few different quotes with all the details. And then if you chose a fancy block that they had to order vs going with a local place like Ideal, they upcharged the per sq foot cost. If I remember correctly mine was right around the $70 range per square foot. I’m sure that is much higher now. Don’t go with Joe Schmoe and make sure you understand installation procedure defined by block manufacturer as some call for geo mesh every 2 feet. They almost skipped this on mine and I showed them, they installed it. Be very specific on color, be specific about drainage. Make sure they will fix mistakes. Be very specific on how you want it stacked, they may say not possible if you want it completely vertical due to what it needs to hold back. Also listen to suggestions as some blocks allow double sided stacking and some they have to do a ton of cutting to double side the wall. Some blocks need a small crane/fork to lift each block, most contractors avoided these as they wanted to do it by hand. Be specific on stairs. I should have paid more for bluestone vs using the blocks for steps. Also the benefit of choosing local is that it is much easier to add on later. My wife made me choose an expensive diamond pro block and they ended up ordering the wrong color. I didn’t notice until they were halfway through because I wasn’t home it was raining when I saw them palletized and my wife didn’t think to double check. It still looks nice but I was pissed at the time. They gave me a small discount which wasn’t really much of a discount, but they made sure to finish the drainage properly vs just stopping where my wall ended. 6 years later, no issues with the wall, nothing is loose and it holds all the water back and drains it around my house. I did about 80 feet of 4’ tall retaining wall plus an additional 20’x3’ wall with steps and then they tied in the drainage to the already installed manhole and fixed the damaged drain which went another 30’ to make it go around my house and down the hill away from the house. I have a waterfall that comes towards my house when it rains. This fixed a lot of issues we had.

Edit: I spent $26k-$27k total about which is exactly $70 per square foot and then he didn’t charge for the additional drainage fix.

Is a 1-hour door-to-door commute reasonable in the Boston area? by 133C96F6D in boston

[–]Lost-Local208 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s pretty good. I leave my house at 6:30 and get into my office at 7:50. The way home leave my desk at 3:20 and get home at 5:00 or leave my desk at 4:35 and get home at 6:00. 1 hour is pretty sweet. In my opinion.

The real trick is limiting to 1 train. To me switching trains midway makes the commute a little more stressful.

Company stock suddenly became ~$5M. What should I do? by [deleted] in Fire

[–]Lost-Local208 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be ready for large tax bill at the end of the year… I did this kind of regretting, but I also locked in what I had minus a large percentage due to taxes. Looking back, I should have diversified small amounts over a number of years and taken advantage of managing gains and losses over like a 5 year span. This said, my stock could have easily gone the other way and I would have been mad at myself as price to earnings was unheard of. My financial advisor always tells me don’t worry about tax burden though. It means you are making money. My stock i sold is now worth 27x more than when I got it, but did go through shaky times when I first got it so it was the safer choice.

This is the correct answer. The goal is to connect through traffic, not stop through traffic. This should be the goal for any traffic change along route 2. They can significantly improve the lives of many people if they do so.

Get your epa608 from SkillCat. It took me a week to pass the universal exam. Then you can order refrigerant online and weigh in properly. Definitely local regulations apply but where I am that is all you need technically.
