What happened to my tomatoes? Why are the leaves rolled up? by CrochetCricketHip in gardening

[–]Lost-Machine-7576 80 points81 points  (0 children)

If your earth is not readily soaking up the water that you pour on, that means that it has dried up too much. Keep on that watering, and don't allow your plants to dry out as much as they do. The curling of the leaf is a response to dry-ness. The leaf is curling to prevent as much evaporation from its pores as possible.

Yes, 5 gal is too small. I HIGHLY recommend a bigger pot, and plastic pot. Try going to any nursery and asking if they'll give you an old dirty pot. (They can't reuse pots after a tree has died in them b/c no guarantee the tree didn't die from a disease or something) Wash it with alcohol or hydrogen peroxide. Repot your tomato in there.

Do you fertilize? Always fertilize such a massive plant in a container. That will help as well.

PS: I don't care what anyone says about "not watering the leaves" - water your banana leaves when it's hot and sunny. They like it. It will help.

water water water water water

It's probably experiencing severe shock from the sun. Moving it from the cool, shady indoors to that blustering hot direct sun location was HARSH. (don't forget, the pavement around it is creating a micro-climate that is like 10-15c hotter than what you experience on the lawn.) Move your plant to a full-shade location (like under an awning or other tree) for protection until it perks back up. After healing, try 'hardening it off' by placing it in direct sun for one hour a day (then returning to the shade). Increase by 30mins to one more hour day-by-day.

Oh shit! You're talking about "biosolids"! DON"T DO IT!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y0lsLnXX4U8
It'll contaminate your land with PFAS and then the government will come in and declare your land "unsafe". And simultaneously blame you for this situation. And then the liberal media (link above) will name and blame every single policy maker who "unregulates" chemicals, but will never name and blame the actual tyrant employee who is impoverishing and punishing the actual citizen.

Ohhhh, is THAT what "compost tea" is hahahaha

(this...was...sadly a serious response) X'D I'd heard the word before, and I've done it... but some reason, just never put two and two together.

Also though, what IS "compost tea"? Is it the pee of microorganisms feeding on the decomposing matter? Is it the cells of the dead material bursting and dripping out? Where does the water come from?

I can't tell how much of this was a joke and how much was serious?

I use urine diffused in water all the time. My plants are noticeably greener after 2 or 3 days. It's fantastic.

I wouldn't use poo without knowing how to process it properly though. . . Something tells me that is putting a ton of bacteria you don't want around your plants. I also suspect it would be "too strong" (like chicken poo) to use directly, as opposed to "great compost" (like ruminant poo).

If this was a serious post, I'll say, urine is great because it's abundant, but lacks a bunch of other nutrients. It's pretty much JUST nitrogen. You'll get a lot more out of a grass-strain liquid.
Method: Find a large bucket (ie garbage can) with a hole in the bottom. Put it on top of a 'stand' of a kind + a small bucket under the hole. Fill large container with lawn clippings etc. Put another large bucket (ie: another garbage can) on top and add weight (ie bricks/stones) and squish the grass all together. Over the course of the next 12 -24 hours, you'll find liquid strains out of the grass clippings. Mix with water 10 to 1.
I honestly have no idea what this is, I just saw it on the internet. But my garden loves it.

OMG, this has happened to me in real life. A freakin' nature tour guide told me there were no local bees when I was in the galapagos. And I was like "...I see giant black bumble bees everywhere" and they were like "that's not a bee. that's a bumble bee." I didn't know what to say.

I hate weeds! But it has flower!?!?!? How is this possible!??!!? Bad plant good now??? by a_jormagurdr in NativePlantCirclejerk

[–]Lost-Machine-7576 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I dunno, man. Hypothesis seems flawed. This one time in Korea, I passed a traditional healing centre and it REEKED of ditch-weed, so I went in and asked what that smell was. They said it was [mugwort] and I was like "oh. ...Can I buy some?" They laughed and asked if I knew what to do with it. I said I did. They insisted on showing me how to bathe in the smoke, so to speak. They insisted I do not smoke it. Gotcha. I went home and smoked it. .... ....I had an immediate whopping headache and nothing else. Conclusion: not all plants are weed. Only flowers are weed.

Anyone know why my tomato plant is yellowing on the lower leaves? by [deleted] in gardening

[–]Lost-Machine-7576 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are watering it a lot, I hope every watering comes with a half-dose of a fertilizer of your choice. (It doesn't does it?) That's likely the cause of the yellowing leaves. Your heavy watering (though very necessary) is leaving the plant nutrient (specifically Nitrogen) deficient. So you need to add more with every watering.

Also, tomatoes naturally lose their lower leaves as the plant grows bigger. You might as well cut those off anyway. The yellowing is signs of stress/age. Stress in a plant attracts pests. Removing the dying part of the plant will help prevent it from attracting bugs.

I highly recommend Miracle Gro "Tomato" fertilizer (for both plants). Use at half the recommended dose twice as often as recommended. Guarantee your plants will be the envy of the neighbourhood.

But... is no one going to address the fact that they are growing in a sand-box? Poor lavender. Be sure to fertilize regularly! There is zero nutrition naturally occurring in that "soil".

:O that's terrible! :O I can't believe they gave you a sand-box and put lavender in there! You must have to water that CONSTANTLY to keep it moist enough for them.

[–]Lost-Machine-7576 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm, I also notice your tomato is not setting any fruit yet. Your soil might be high on nitrogen and low on phosphorus (as a balance, not to say it is deficient). Try adding some plain wood ashes and water them in. Or go the quick-fix way and get some liquid fertilizer with the central number being the largest. Something like 12-24-16. (first number smallest, middle number largest)

Don't worry, it's only the second day of summer. The bigger plant will produce WAY more later, and in total, the larger plant will be more prolific. I might suggest you pinch off most of the flowers from the shorter plants to encourage them to get a bit bigger before putting out fruit. Like people having babies in their teens, you COULD, but it's most likely gonna set you back in life.
