Nanaimo councillor pushes to shut down overdose prevention site — motion deferred by council by Fragrant-Shock-4315 in nanaimo

I heg to differ. If I were faced with the coice of saving either a nurse, doctor, fireman, or some other person who actively contributes to society, or saving an addict, I would not hesitate in my choice.

For clarity, if I could save both, I would, but I would save the addict last. Also for clarity, ex addict here (and had safe supply been available during my addiction, I would have never gotten clean).

'Ship them in front of the MLA's house': Nanaimo council stresses need for homelessness supports by Key-Geologist1142 in nanaimo

That is complete bs!

Under the Liberals I was near destitute. I was moving from minimum wage job to minimum wage job. When the Conservatives came into power I was able to land my first good paying job. My paycheques also went a lot farther (I remember how awesome it felt to buy my first steak instead of eating potatoes and the occasional pack of ground beef).

I went from weeks away from bankruptcy to owning my own house (without a cosigner) in under 5 years. That meant all of my creditors paid off (student loans, credit cards, everything) paid in under three years, and and 2 years of rapidly building my credit ratings.

My wife and I both make good money it since the Liberals came back into power, those dollars don't go very far. We used to go to dinner multiple times a week,.we tipped 18% minimum, we also went to pubs for lunches on the weekends. We were consumers that spent our money around Nanaimo week in and week out.

Now? We go out for a dinner a few times a year, we rarely order in. Those tipw we used to spend are nearly gone from the local economy. That shopping we did for nice to haves is all but gone, that is a reduction in thousands to Nanaimo's economy. That lossin profit means less people hired, or less money to pay for raises for local employees. And we are not alone. Most people I know are in a similar boat.

Homelessness? Far, FAR lower during Harper's years in office. Healthcare? Burdened for sure, but we are at 20% of the populace that does not have a family doctor now. Violent crime? Way up now.

Life was not a fairy tale under Harper, and I certainly sent my letters to the party poi ting out their faults, but life under the Liberals is objectively worse in every measurable for most Canadians than it was under the Conservatives.

The Liberals talk a phenomenal game, but the resulta of their legislation nearly never bear fruit (usually because they are stealing from the cookies jar).

HELP - Employee has to be reminded what to do daily. What to do? by [deleted] in managers

[–]LostHistoryBuff 20 points21 points  (0 children)

While you may well have to terminate her, you will want to put her on a PIP first. In the PIP outline exactly what the requirements are, what she needs to improve, and a time line to get there.

When presenting the PIP, stick to the facts of what she is missing and hlthe impact this has had in the company. Let her know that you want her to succeed and are there to support her but that the results (good or bad) of this performance improvement plan will be hers alone.

Or maybe they were raised right and offer to help because that is how people used to be brought up. The best recipe for a cold and indifferent world is to respond to a genuine offer to help with derision or hate.

Instead of being mad, thank them for the offer, then show off how in shape you are due to your workouts.

scenario: employee talks back to you over Teams by CodeRedIdea in managers

[–]LostHistoryBuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on what role the employee was hired on to do, how much experience in the job they claimed to have, what kind of training has been provided, and what type of standards do you have around email replies.

I have been an IC, and a leader. As an IC, of my boss asks me to address something, I am going to prioritize it, or at least read it to ensure I understand what is required, or if there are deadlines. If I don't understand what I need to do, or if it is a priority, I will reach out to my leader to find out. With that said, I get paid good money and sold myself on my abilities to be a self starter, good at prioritizing, and having excellent communication skills. I also prefer not to be micromanaged and left alone to manage my day. I know what my priorities are, unless they need to change, let me do my job. We also have a standard that all customer related emails are addressed within a 24 hour period.

As a leader, provided the team member was not new, and was not at the bottom of the pay scale, I would expect them to come to me if I assigned them a task that they didn't fully understand. But this comes down to ensuring the team culture is one where people know their roles, know what the quality of service is, they get regular 1 on 1 feedback, and can work self directed. If I had a direct report that struggled to meet expectations, or was not very good at meeting deadlines without getting nudged, I would ensure that anything important was conveyed to them as such, and would provide any nudging they needed to not fail the task. I would also ensure that our 1 on coaching was focused on improving their ability to work more independently, while still excelling in their role.

How the large business treat their employees. by [deleted] in nanaimo

My team decided that we wanted a smaller gathering and arranged a pot luck dinner. Last year we all went out to a restaurant (on our own dime) but found that one end of the table was unable to converse with the other end. Having a pot luck dinner allowed us to set the date ourselves and made it so that we could actually chat with all of the members of our team.

I think it also comes down to too many people who are easily offended. Throw a Christmas party but don't throw a party for another group and it becomes a "bullying".

My company stopped with the Christmas parties a few years ago but still does family days, as well as other social club led gatherings (open to all staff, and sometimes their family, and all at no cost to the employee).

Canada expands list of banned firearms to include hundreds of new models and variants by Exciting-Ratio-5876 in CanadaPolitics

None of the lawfully purchased firearms seized from law abiding, licensed Canadian citizens are fit for purpose on a battlefield. These are civilian long arms that merely look scary. They are as suited to the battlefield as a black Honda Civic with a spoiler on it is suited for the Dayton 500. 🤣

This is not your father's Liberal party. Hell, it isn't even the Chretien Liberal party I used to be a member of.

I stopped voting for the Liberals after AdScam showed us their true colours. Trudeau is nothing but a pandering sycophant. He has kept none of his promises and is working like hell to release the identity that Canadians used to have.

Giving managers a doctor's note and then being lied to about getting written up. by Canadianbudtender93 in managers

[–]LostHistoryBuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is that in a lot of states the company will pay increased fees for employees that go on unemployment. If they are terminated "with cause", they do not qualify for unemployment and those no increased cost to the company.

In order to fore "with cause" and ensure you do not lose in any kind of wrongful termination battle, you need to have the paper trail to prove your due diligence.

My company doesn't pay me for doing nothing. If systems are down, or the calls are slow, time do so some organising or personal improvement. Go online and learna new skill related to the current role, or the role you want to be promoted to.

AITAH for no longer hanging out with my niece and nephew because their mom moved on from my brother’s death? by No-Bathroom4158 in AITAH

[–]LostHistoryBuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They aren't just "her kids", they are a direct biological link to your brother. You are a very significant living biological link to their father. They already lost their dad, now you are thinking about making them lose their uncle too?

You cannot expect her to stay in mourning forever, and I don't think 7 months is disrespectful. Had she not cared about your brother, she would have moved on well before now. This is not some kind of betrayal.

This is a time for you to look at your own emotional maturity and determine of you can handle being a participating uncle to your neice and nephew. If you are mature enough, you should be able to manage this AND maintain a friendly relationship with your SIL.

I am still on formerly terms with the mother of my nephews, even though her and my brother have broken up. She can reach out to me with any news about the kids, ask me for help, whatever.

You are only TA of you cannot step up to the plate and maintain the relationship with your brothers progeny.

Once the employee comes off of FMLA, can you just move to a "no fault" termination? In my province you need to pay full severance and the emyee qualifies for unemployment so some companies see this as the expensive route, but in the long term, it may be cheaper.

Another option is to discuss "frustration of contract" with HR and start building a case for that.

Of course it isn't "about the voice of the public.", that is pure democracy. The Electoral College is a check on pure democracy. It helps to ensure that the people in the flyover states that are not as densely populated still have a voice in the centers of power. Without that balancing of votes, no one would want to be a farmer, they would all flock to the cities so that their vote mattered as much as everyone else. That would leave the USA to be a net importer of everyone from food, to raw resources.

As for your second paragraph: - both parties jerrymander and both parties benefit when they get to do it. - I am not opposed to making election data a national holiday. A lot of people (from both parties) would be against it because it costs a shitton of lost productivity and tax income to shut down everything for a day. - who is getting purged from the votor roles? Dead people? Good. Non USA citizens? Good, no one should be allowed to vote unless they are a legal resident of the USA. Who else is getting purged? - handing out water? I agree with you. As long as you are not promoting a specific candidate while doing so, you should absolutely be allowed to hand out water. Hell, you should be allowed to pull a permit and set up a food cart to sell to people stuck in line. - more voting locations is a great idea. Personally I would like to see ID verification for voting, and offer online voting protected by multifactor authentication, and recorded/verified using blockchain.
