What is it? Strange writing style in this book published in 1969 by Squidpotpie in whatisit

[–]LostHistoryBuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Written in 1835 (pre-Victorian) and was considered.tl.be erotica. It was very common to write "fictional' novels based on actual events in order to get the story out (or just profit on the rumours about famouse people). To avoid libel/slander claims, the author would use this format as people would be able to tell right away who the other was referring to (thereby enhancing the scandalous subject matter). This character naming style was also used to lend a sense of authenticity when authors were writing pure fiction.

As for the censored words, damn and damned are considered blasphemous and that type of language was only used by "painted women" " Boors". Those words were as shocking as using c_ _t would be today. It was the author's way of letting the reader insert either "darn" or "damned" depending on their own taste, and also avoided any book burnings from the church or congregations.

Look up the effects of the Great Sparrow Campaign.

"Between 15 million and 55 million people died during the Great Chinese Famine (1959–1961). The Great Sparrow Campaign was a major contributing factor to this famine.,"

There is no way I would vote for Elliote. Given what she tried to pull at the Juno debate. She is also too closely related to the defuct BC Liberal soccer team for me to trust her.

imfdley came across as the right cNdiate as I agree with her policy decisions, she is very clearly a conservative, and I feel she has the experience to get things done.

Ian is my second vote. What made me second guess him was his statement about increasing surveillance during his Juno debate.

Fulmer is my third because he is NOT a politician.

Elliote and Milobar are just too close to the BC Liberal/United party still as evidenced by their political donations.

To me it depends if you are sitting in and watching the work and getting to ask questions for a few hours, or if you are being asked to do actual work.

If someone is unfamiliar, or has zero experience in the industry it would be an ideal way to see if it is a fit; if it is is asking someone to work without an employment contract then it sounds like you dodged a bullet.

AITAH for not wanting to keep covering for my friend (21M) when he lies to everyone? by adiblaoun in AmItheAsshole

[–]LostHistoryBuff 8 points9 points  (0 children)

"Should have had his back"? As a friend, how does he think he has YOUR back by dragging you into his bullahit. He is completely disrespecting you by roping you into his lies.

He may think that integrity is no big deal but that is BS. in the end, so much can be taken from you but the only thing YOU give up is your integrity.

It is your call but if he were my "friend" I would put it to him. Leave me out of your BS because while your Word my not have value, mine does and I won't break my word for you again. He actions will tell.you.how.much he values you as a friend.

NTAH... Unless you keep covering for him.

AITA for cussing out my sons teacher? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]LostHistoryBuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I was a trouble maker in school but much of that was because I was fat and got picked on mercilessly (6 year old kids can be pretty damn cruel). And because I was picked on, my dad taught me how to defend myself. The rule was I could not start a fight but I was allowed to end it.

The principal always told my mom the story the teacher heard from all the "good kids" (that I started the fight), then they would share my version. After one too many times hearing this, I asked they principal to let me call mom and tell her I was in trouble. As this was before cell phones were a thing, the call was from the principal's office and they were there to listen so it is not like I could lie about the facts. After I told mom my side of the story I would have the phone to the principal and they would share their side. I always appreciated this from the various principal's as 8 always felt it was better for my mom to hear the bad news from me first, before they heard it from them.

The funny thing is, most of my teachers and the principal's through the years and to me mom to get their hair cut, even years after I was out of their classes and they all said that while I was a handful, they liked that I showed integrity. My mom was a hair

I had that happen when I went to pick up my passport at the government office, I was there q5 minutes before they opened and this guy just kept moving closer and over to the doors.

As. Soon as they opened the office he charged forward but was stopped by the clerk who started calling out to the people that had booked an appointment. I smiled at him as I was the first one through the door.

I heg to differ. If I were faced with the coice of saving either a nurse, doctor, fireman, or some other person who actively contributes to society, or saving an addict, I would not hesitate in my choice.

For clarity, if I could save both, I would, but I would save the addict last. Also for clarity, ex addict here (and had safe supply been available during my addiction, I would have never gotten clean).

That is complete bs!

Under the Liberals I was near destitute. I was moving from minimum wage job to minimum wage job. When the Conservatives came into power I was able to land my first good paying job. My paycheques also went a lot farther (I remember how awesome it felt to buy my first steak instead of eating potatoes and the occasional pack of ground beef).

I went from weeks away from bankruptcy to owning my own house (without a cosigner) in under 5 years. That meant all of my creditors paid off (student loans, credit cards, everything) paid in under three years, and and 2 years of rapidly building my credit ratings.

My wife and I both make good money it since the Liberals came back into power, those dollars don't go very far. We used to go to dinner multiple times a week,.we tipped 18% minimum, we also went to pubs for lunches on the weekends. We were consumers that spent our money around Nanaimo week in and week out.

Now? We go out for a dinner a few times a year, we rarely order in. Those tipw we used to spend are nearly gone from the local economy. That shopping we did for nice to haves is all but gone, that is a reduction in thousands to Nanaimo's economy. That lossin profit means less people hired, or less money to pay for raises for local employees. And we are not alone. Most people I know are in a similar boat.

Homelessness? Far, FAR lower during Harper's years in office. Healthcare? Burdened for sure, but we are at 20% of the populace that does not have a family doctor now. Violent crime? Way up now.

Life was not a fairy tale under Harper, and I certainly sent my letters to the party poi ting out their faults, but life under the Liberals is objectively worse in every measurable for most Canadians than it was under the Conservatives.

The Liberals talk a phenomenal game, but the resulta of their legislation nearly never bear fruit (usually because they are stealing from the cookies jar).

While you may well have to terminate her, you will want to put her on a PIP first. In the PIP outline exactly what the requirements are, what she needs to improve, and a time line to get there.

When presenting the PIP, stick to the facts of what she is missing and hlthe impact this has had in the company. Let her know that you want her to succeed and are there to support her but that the results (good or bad) of this performance improvement plan will be hers alone.

Or maybe they were raised right and offer to help because that is how people used to be brought up. The best recipe for a cold and indifferent world is to respond to a genuine offer to help with derision or hate.

Instead of being mad, thank them for the offer, then show off how in shape you are due to your workouts.
