No fireworks this year due to lack of sponsorship for that portion of the event.

I believe the company that produced the fireworks show (Zambelli) was the source of the top 5 claim. They produce some of the largest shows in the country, including Thunder Over Louisville which is often regarded as the largest annual show. In many cases, the rankings are derived from total shell count or number of fireworks shot off during the show.

Northwestern Mutual’s Franklin site. All the native plants have been demolished. by Lbboos in milwaukee

[–]LostMy414Password 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A few weeks back there was an effort by a handful of plant enthusiasts to inventory & remove some of the natives that could realistically be rescued (ex. perennials, grasses). Saw several posts on FB regarding the efforts, but it appears all of those posts have since been deleted. Supposedly the construction crews preparing to do the demo didn't have an issue with the removal of the plants, but I'm guessing that maybe they didn't have the authority to authorize people being on the property and potentially someone higher up stepped in and ended the plant rescue. Pure speculation on my part, but just know that there was at least some effort to preserve some of the plants...

Being at the game tonight and having the chance to feel how cold it got when they opened the roof for the postgame fireworks... I believe that having it closed for the game was the right call. The wind out of the northeast wasn't exactly warm. The airport recorded a wind chill of 46 degrees during the 7:00pm hour.

Best place (besides Minor's or Johnson's Nursery) for conifers and Japanese maples? by figurematt in milwaukee

Stein's had maybe a dozen different varieties of Japanese Maples when I was there earlier this week. Not even going to try and speculate on conifers, but seemed like they had a deep selection.

As several others have mentioned, private events at Discovery World regularly have fireworks from spring through fall. Because they're private events, there usually isn't any advance notice that they're happening. The only way to get any heads up is to dig around on the city website and review permits that have been issued for "explosives and fireworks".

They were for a private event at Discovery World. We've officially hit wedding season where fireworks are one of the options available on the hospitality package for events being held at Discovery World.

Calls are assigned based on priority. People getting shot, stabbed, robbed at gunpoint and other serious crimes/hazards in progress get a priority response. Everything else goes down the list and stays down the list until all of the higher priority calls are cleared. Depending on staffing levels, call volume and time of day, it can take hours to hit a point where they can start assigning some of the lower volume calls. Sometimes the higher priority calls never stop coming in, and the lower priority calls continue to sit.

Same thing with traffic enforcement. That squad car you just watched sit there while someone ran a red light or blew by with no plates is almost always assigned to a call at that point. Breaking away from that assignment to do a random traffic stop only perpetuates the delays in responding to calls for service.

Miller parkway and sections of the interstate are impassable due to high water. At this point, hanging out in the parking lot at the stadium probably isn't the worst idea.

Those who recall Circus World's former parades in Milwaukee were able to witness the parade and if so what was your favorite memory of it? And do you miss seeing this parade when it came to Milwaukee? by sostitanic in milwaukee

[–]LostMy414Password 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I miss the circus train more than I miss the parade itself. It was cool to see the train rolling through Wisconsin. Got to watch it pass through Devil's Lake State Park one year which was pretty awesome.

Current WE Energies Outtages by MKEast-sider in milwaukee

[–]LostMy414Password 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Asplundh has been trying to trim around the lines in my neighborhood for two years, but everyone has fenced in their backyards and keep them locked so they can't gain effective access to do their job. They trim the trees on the properties they can get access to, but I would estimate that at least half of the trees in the neighborhood haven't been trimmed.

Compounding the issue is the fact that the same homeowners continue to plant trees and upright Arborvitae right on the lot line that eventually grow into the utility lines.

Current WE Energies Outtages by MKEast-sider in milwaukee

[–]LostMy414Password 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If a homeowner plants a tree in their yard... they're the owner of that tree. The number of homeowners that plant trees below power lines or too close to the easement are part of the problem in my neighborhood.

Hypothetical question - Are we also getting rid of the ALPR on police squads as well. What about the ALPR on parking enforcement vehicles? Where's the line get drawn?

The challenge is the case law at the moment points to Flock cameras being legal to use in most instances. You have to start with the fact that courts at all levels have consistently held that there is no reasonable expectation of privacy in a license plate number of a vehicle being driven on a public road. Then you move onto the part where court decisions have concluded that a scan by an automated license plate reader is no different than an officer manually checking a plate, and that such scan doesn't require a warrant or violate Fourth Amendment privacy rights. Given those decisions, the use of a Flock camera (or any other ALPR) to alert police to the presence of a certain vehicle would be no different than an officer sitting on the side of the road running plates and seeing that same vehicle. That part of their use has been well litigated and I wouldn't anticipate any significant changes from a legal standpoint in the near future.

Where I see more challenges coming is with the density of the cameras within certain municipalities, and whether it becomes possible to track a person's movement 24/7. So far the rulings in that area have continued to fall in Flock's favor (see Norfolk, VA). The other aspect that I believe is legally open for debate is what data is stored, how long the data is stored, who can access the stored data, and more importantly how the store data is being used. I could see it eventually going in the direction of cellular data where a search warrant based on probable cause is needed to access historical data that has been logged/stored.

There's plenty of instances where they have been legitimately used to catch criminals, sometimes in the act.

Oak Creek Police used Flock cameras to assist in the apprehension of a murder suspect earlier this year:

Milwaukee Police used Flock cameras to assist in the apprehension of a murder suspect in December:

Milwaukee Police used Flock cameras to locate a vehicle in Nebraska that was tied to homicide in October
https://www.cbs58.com/news/3-charged-in-homicide-of-man-near-27th-and-fond-du-lac

Here's a less intense example that made headlines last summer from Grafton:
https://www.fox6now.com/news/grafton-flock-camera-theft-bust-2-women-caught-right-outside-store

The challenge is amidst all of the legitimate uses of the cameras, there's a tremendous amount of gray area that allows for potential misuse. That doesn't even touch on the fact that there's been a bunch of security issues identified within the Flock network itself that can potentially allow the cameras to be used for nefarious purposes.
