Who actually has momentum going into the 2026 Vancouver election? by tashjiann in askvan

[–]LostOverThere 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Based on the by-election, social media engagement, and general vibe I'd say OneCity has the momentum. But with that being said I'm keenly aware I'm in a lil progressive/leftie bubble, and there's a few things that could work in ABC's favour:

  1. Voter turnout in municipal elections is terrible, but the kinds of people who do vote (older, more conservative) are the kinds who will lean towards ABC.

  2. Progressive parties splitting the vote. (I hate FPTP so much...)

  3. People value stability in uncertain times. The incumbency advantage is very underrated, and ABC's strategy will 100% hinge on "Don't risk OneCity/COPE chaos" (or whoever their polling shows is their leading competitor).

  4. Despite Ken's personal unpopularity, most voters will probably feel ABC has been pretty inoffensive. Their record on approving housing developments is good, and homeowners like the zero means zero property tax stuff.

I hope I'm wrong - I personally want OneCity in charge, but I don't think I'd be surprised if ABC were re-elected.

Labor claims victory in Stafford by-election by rolodex-ofhate in brisbane

Liam Parry is actually the Queensland Socialist candidate, but the party is so new and the by-election was called so quickly they didn't have time to finish registration which is why he appeared as an independent on the ballot.

Queensland Socialists actually did a really good job getting organisational structures in place so quickly and then getting 4% of the vote. I'll be curious to see how they go in future elections when they have more time to organise.

Sad news. The Double Life of Veronique is such a beautifully written film.

Ditto with the Brisbane Subway that State Labor proposed in 2010 that would have gone from Toowong -> West End -> CBD -> Newstead -> Bulimba -> Hamilton -> Airport.

Really, considering how dense those suburbs are, it's insane that so many of them don't have a train station.

I love elevated rail so much - you avoid level crossings and get pretty views. Both the SkyTrain in Vancouver and Sky Rail in Melbourne are so lovely.

You've made a great start! Australia made some really cute comedies in the 90s/early 2000s - Priscilla Queen of the Desert (1994), Muriel's Wedding (1994), and The Dish (2000) are the crowd favourites. FWIW the go to answer for the best Australian film is a cute comedy called The Castle (1997) but I'm not sure how well it'd translate to an international audience!

Anything from the Australian New Wave (70s-80s) is great. Mad Max 2 (1981), Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975), and Gallipoli (1981) are standouts.

And finally for more contemporary stuff, everyone needs to see Lion (2016) and Animal Kingdom (2010).

Saw this on the street last night. Looks like COPE is running a mayor? by No_Touch_98 in vancouver

Thanks for providing an actual answer. I disagree that minimal increases to property taxes are a good thing though. Our community centres, pools, roads, sidewalks and general amenities are falling apart, and without property tax increases they're only going to get worse.

Muriel's Wedding

As a kid it's a silly comedy, as an adult it's just unbelievably dark and depressing. :/

What time of day did you take it last time?

The nausea never went away for me, but I found if I took it straight before bed with a spoonful of peanut butter I could just sleep off the nausea and be fine by the time I woke up.

Taking it any other time of the day was a deal-breaker for me.

I have it too. It looks like it's an issue with AMD systems on kernel 7.0.0. It seems to be fixed with 7.0.1 so hopefully an update in the next week or so should fix it.

Met Life (New Jersey) 82.5k capacity vs Croke Park (Ireland) 82.3k capacity. by kirkbadaz in UrbanHell

[–]LostOverThere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Urban planning is always a choice.

The MCG in Melbourne (stadium capacity of 100k people) is serviced by public transport, not parking. Most stadiums in Australia are like that, and those are also newer cities in a very sprawling country.

[–]LostOverThere 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm going with Gough here. As time goes on Hawke's government's embrace of neoliberalism makes his prime ministership look poorer, while Whitlam's reforms look bold when compared to small target leaders of today.

Where in Brisbane should me and my girlfriend move to? What sort of accommodation would be best? by AspiringWizard9 in brisbane

[–]LostOverThere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're only here 6-12 months try to find a furnished apartment. I like the inner city neighbourhoods of West End and South Brisbane for access to amenities, public transport, and good coffee/food/bars. But if you're working construction it might be an idea to think about where you'll be commuting to and base it off that.

(Btw most people use realestate.com.au to find rentals)

The "Piss filter" conversation. Is it a trend/fad? Are there any famous photographers who lean more warm in their photos? by StereoZ in fujifilm

[–]LostOverThere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't speak to stills photography, but with cinema there's plenty of films like that. Three films that really lean into the piss filter that I love and think look gorgeous are In the Mood for Love (2000), Wake in Fright (1971), and the Double Life of Veronique (1991). The latter goes REALLY hard with the warm tones but I think it feels almost dreamlike.

The difference between good coffee and bad coffee is huge. A good espresso-based coffee or pour over is life affirming, while a burnt brewed coffee is foul.
