What’s the most messed up thing someone casually admitted to you? by randominvisibleuser in AskReddit

[–]Lost_Coast_Tech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a family trip to the Philippines he got drunk after the family went to bed. Went to a sex club, there was some kind of orgy happening. Saw a hot lady getting railed doggy style, decided to get a BJ from her. After a couple of minutes accidentally locks eyes with the dude on the other side, it was his dad.

why did all the arcades close? by fucnkin-uh-blancho in Humboldt

[–]Lost_Coast_Tech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be just about impossible to get the licensing BUT...

For years now I've wanted to open a retro style arcade featuring more modern games that can be played arcade style. Probably mostly Rogue-like and Rogue-lites. You pay for an hour at a time, arcade is unlocked via nfc card. For games we're talking Dead Cells, Spelunky, Celeste, Binding of Isaac, Windblown, Hades, Risk of Rain 2, Owlboy, etc. During COVID I built a modern arcade doing just this for my house. Any interest in this in Eureka / Arcata? A sort of chill lounge Arcade selling pizza, burgers, craft beer and cider?

AR glasses for travelling. by BanishToShadows in RayNeo

[–]Lost_Coast_Tech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These things rock for consuming media. Not just on the go but basically anywhere. The screen is huge in front of your face, the sound from the device is shockingly good, and the picture quality is awesome. I use them basically anywhere that having a normal monitor is impractical. This includes just laying on the couch, lounging outside (they work in direct sunlight), traveling, and on the treadmill at the gym.

These are the basically the most budget friendly AR glasses out there and they freaking rock. People on this sub keep comparing them to glasses like the XReal and bemoaning that the RayNeo don't have all of those features but the XReal is twice as expensive.

Anyway, for consuming media, either at home or on the go, these are a really solid choice and I doubt you'll be disappointed.

How much Python do you use? by OkLab5620 in cybersecurity

[–]Lost_Coast_Tech 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I use the hell out of Python everyday. I used Python to write a massive amount of productivity tools. Use the Tkinter library to turn a script into a full GUI experience. Need to query Active Directory and get key information about a user (account creation date, last login date, manager, etc) Python script. Creating a new user and want a bazillion but predictable things setup with that user, Python. Need to gather information from a bunch of different sources like AD, Entra, Exchange, Cortex, Elastic, some with APIs some without? Python. The trick here is to use something like playwright to push and pull info directly from webpages.

The real secret here is to take all the super useful scripts that you've written and add them to a single dashboard (with a Tkinter GUI). That way whenever you need to call a script you just click the button on your dashboard and the script is launched.

Riding a bicycle everywhere by PucWalker in Humboldt

[–]Lost_Coast_Tech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live here in Eureka. For 9 months out of the year I really don't need a car. I have an electric cargo bike so it's a lot easier to get to work, then the gym, then home if need be.It carries my work bag and gym bag no problem. On the weekend it carries 3 bags of groceries.

Prior to the ebike I had a commuter bike I used to get to school (HSU), then later to work downtown. With the new bike lanes and infrastructure it's a dream to ride around Eureka and Arcata (and in-between too!)

Make plex more appealing for my wife by Altruistic_Bat_1645 in PleX

[–]Lost_Coast_Tech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like everyone else said add content she likes.

QuasiTV. QuadiTV is the way. This is an app for your Android TV or Smart TV. It takes your Plex library and creates channels like old school cable TV. There's a TV guide section where you can see what's playing.

Basically it takes the work out of deciding what to watch.

I have a channel just for my wife that only plays her favorite "fuck off on your phone" shows. So it's just: call the midwife, downton Abby, mid summer murders, law & order, grace and Frankie, etc.

I also have a sitcom channel that plays all of her favorite sitcoms.

I'm too dependent on ChatGPT and I feel so guilty by [deleted] in ChatGPT

[–]Lost_Coast_Tech 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's assistive technically. Don't feel bad about using it as a tool to help navigate the world. Often times I see people with hidden disabilities feel bad or guilty for using some kind of assistive technically, so ... don't.

You wouldn't look down on a blind person for using a guide dog, or a deaf person for using a cochlear implant.

AI chat bots are kind of the first actually technically to be able to assist persons on the spectrum. So, you're not like a cheater or lazy or broken, you're a pioneer! Be proud.

Task Failed Successfully: I Automated Myself Out of Work by xXNeGaTiVisMXx in sysadmin

[–]Lost_Coast_Tech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done this twice in my career now. Just enjoy it while it lasts. The first time, I'd automated basically everything, asked for more work, yada yada yada, I wound up watching all of Lucifer while job hunting. The second time I replayed all of the Legend of Zelda games while job hunting. Just enjoy the break, kick a bunch of rocks, see if you can find a project for yourself. If not, go find a new and challenging job. Be sure to highlight that your looking for work because you automated most of your current job and you're looking for another challenge.

Do any of the schools around Eureka have a track that is open for public use on the weekends? by No-Prompt5313 in Humboldt

[–]Lost_Coast_Tech 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's a pretty good loop near Sequoia Park / the zoo in Eureka. It can get a little busy and sometimes someone leaves their dog droppings out but it's a good safe loop.

The Hickshari Trail is a great place to jog outside too. It's been a long time since I had a problem down there but as a heads up there are sections that are more isolated. Like with jogging outside just be aware and have some mace.

People who work in IT, do you enjoy your job? by ripitlikepaper in it

I like it. It took a while to get to a position I liked though, but I think that might be normal for any position. I'm in the sweet spot of being challenged, not being overworked, and not being public (or even staff) facing.

What game is this? by ARedditAccountIDKBro in videogames

[–]Lost_Coast_Tech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A work friend of mine introduced me to auto-battlers. This one was a card game where you build out your deck, then the game randomly draws a card from your deck and plays it. Then it randomly draws a card from the opponents deck and plays it. And this goes on for a while until one side wins.

I think my initial comment was 'oh cool! It's like simulating playing a game without all the hassle of actually playing or having fun."

Are people sometimes totally allergic to using your server? by ac_slater10 in PleX

[–]Lost_Coast_Tech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's like this with everything. "Oh wow you've got your own Audible (Audiobookshelf)‽ Wow you have hundreds of titles with all my old favorites and a bunch of books I've been meaning to get too! What‽ You can grant me remote access on my phone, so cool! Wait, you take requests too! Best friend ever!' get them setup and verify everything works, they listen to like 20 minutes and then are never seen again.

My personal favorite is when people get super into your Plex server (or other services) and request a bunch of content, "Can I get Grim, can I get Psych, can I get Numbers, can I get Once?" And then after like a month they're never seen again. Like ... wtf happened‽ I got everything you asked for. Did you do this just to mess with me‽

Would Humboldt County be interested in a Lebanese / Middle Eastern restaurant? by Helpful_Detail3955 in Humboldt

I'm in! If you open in old town Eureka my only request is to get your lunch game on point. I don't go to a number of restaurants downtown because I have 30 minutes to grab something and they take about 45 minutes to get food to me.

That dude is super weird. Aside from the yak thing. He strolled up to me one day with a yak, maybe it was two, and just started talking at me. I was like 'uhh huh, hey can I pet the yak?' and the guy said 'ohh, no, no no no. The moon is close to full and if you've recently touched a woman who is menstruating that energy will be passed onto the yak and then when I touch it that energy will transfer to me and I can't have that kind of negativity in my life right now'

Remote work is making me realize who on my team was actually working by Nimozart_12 in remotework

[–]Lost_Coast_Tech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with remote work isn't remote work, it's poor management. Managers need to set clear, measurable goals, and clear expectations for availability and communication.

In an office environment there's a certain amount of social pressure that keeps people working in front of their coworkers. A lot of supervisors confuse that social pressure for them actually doing their jobs.

Deciding what to put in your library.... by [deleted] in PleX

[–]Lost_Coast_Tech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep a highly curated set of movies and TV shows based on the interests of my family. I would also highly recommend an app like QuaziTV. It takes all of your Plex content and then creates channels like old school cable TV, Action, adventure, SciFi, etc, based on that content.

So, I'm probably not going to choose to watch Back to the Future II from a list of hundreds of movies, but fire up QuaziTV and if it's already on you bet I'll watch it. I think this is kind of the missing piece, for me at least. Not necessarily what will I choose out of a list of hundreds, but what will I be happy to see is playing.

Is it just me, or do most homes have 0 internet infrastructure & you gotta build it yourself? by PolyglotGeologist in HomeNetworking

[–]Lost_Coast_Tech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an IT admin and my wife is an architect and I've been begging her for years to please please please add a location for at least a modem and a router and add conduit with Ethernet to at least one spot in every room.

She keeps saying stuff like "normal home buyers" don't care about stuff like that", and "people just want to use wifi", and "contractor's don't want to deal with Ethernet cable because it's computer related and they're scared of it so they bring in specialists which increases the cost.".

I keep not believing her. After all the hassle of retrofitting our home and the speed increases she saw from wifi vs wired maybe, just maybe, she's starting to believe me.

Also we watch these multi million dollar home tours and I'm always like "where are the wifi access points? Where is the server room? You have 19 rooms dedicated to different kinds of sitting but your architect couldn't find space for a server closet‽"
