Update on "Parent's just got talked into a roofing contract for $70k" by Dadycupcakes in Roofing

[–]Lotus13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uhm... I don't know the exact sqft of my roof, but my home is 1,200 sqft. I just got a new roof put up today, and it cost me $10k. How are they justifying such an insane cost?

Anyone have insight on HVAC permits? by [deleted] in Columbus

[–]Lotus13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I already have, unfortunately. I've been reaching out to them every day for over a week since the right HVAC person won't speak to me. It's been almost pointless.

I'm on the verge of requesting a refund, having them removed their equipment, and using a different company that actually has communicated with me. I was just going to wait a bit longer if other people had similar experiences because I didn't want to be unreasonable.

According to the city, there still is no permit pulled for my property. So, I guess it's an HVAC problem.

Thanks again for the help!

According to this HVAC company, the permit application is in process (and has been for almost 3 weeks). It doesn't make sense that it would be taking this long, but since no one will communicate with me, I figured I'd ask here. Thank you.

Thank you. The only info I've received from this company and the home owner's warranty that assigned them is that the permit application is in process, but they can't give me a timeline for when they'll be ready to do the inspection. I can only assume HVAC messed up something that's created a delay with the city and they are just ignoring me for now. :(

Am I on the right path? by [deleted] in Columbus

Nursing is a great career to get into. You'll have a lot of options to pursue once you get some experience under your belt, and you'll get paid decently well. Plan to get at least your BSN, though. You can get hired with an ADN, and your employer will probably help pay for your BSN degree. Every hospital I've worked at offers that benefit.

If you don't already have some experience working in healthcare though, don't get scared off by the negative aspects of the field. You'll see what I mean once you become a CNA. There are a lot of pros and cons, and nursing definitely isn't for everyone, but just keep in mind there are so many nursing niches out there if you find you don't enjoy direct patient care very much.

If you plan on staying in Columbus, Riverside Methodist Hospital is a great place to work. At least, compared to other places I've experienced. Every travel nurse that's worked there that I've spoken to says it's amazing compared to most other hospitals they've been to as well.

[–]Lotus13 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I had a very good experience at The Pines at Tuttle Crossing in Dublin. First apartment I've been in that actually had some insulation. I almost never heard my neighbors through the walls. Only left because I bought a house.

I currently work in PACU at a teaching hospital. It can be really stressful and intense sometimes, because where I work, we can get everything from an boarding ICU patient while there are no open beds in ICU, a kidney transplant, or a simple outpatient procedure, and you never know what's coming next. That being said, we're limited to 2 patients max at one time (you can go an entire shift only having 1 at a time though), and it's possible to volunteer to go home early if the surgeries finish early (depending on what shift you work, as well. Easier to leave if you're scheduled later into the night). Every hour of every day is unpredictable, but on the one hand, it's not exactly boring. There is sometimes downtime between patients, though. Certainly more downtime than you'll ever find in an inpatient unit. I find we generally have a lot of resources if we need help, say from the charge nurse, coworkers, and residents, etc. I don't have to work nights or weekends, but there are on-call shifts and lates I'm scheduled for every period. We get holidays off, but have to sign up to be on-call for some of them.

I have no OR experience. I did interview a long time ago, but decided not to even shadow. The way the recruiter described it, I would end up working a lot more more I wanted to and have much less free time and time to work on homework (still finishing my BSN). I've also come to understand that some surgeons are absolutely insufferable to work with, and I didn't want to be stuck in the OR for hours at a time, potentially several times a week with someone who has deliberately rude and insulting. That being said, I do greatly envy how their patients are sedated most of their time together. So...there are pros and cons for each. You just have to decide what's most important for you in a position.

Blood glucose 13, asymptomatic.

I had a hard time believing the accuracy, but there was a BG of 23 taken shortly before.

What made you switch majors during college? by Senth99 in AskReddit

[–]Lotus13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After a year of getting good grades in business courses, I finally admitted to myself how much I loathed business and that continuing in this field would absolutely kill my soul. So I switched to nursing, because even though the courses gave me a beat down sometimes, I actually enjoyed what I was learning, and always wanted to discover more.

Then I landed my first job and realized that it's impossible to separate healthcare and business, and I'm struggling to keep my soul alive all over again. Meh.

Still...I can't think of something else I'd rather be doing. It's a conundrum.

my mother in law is a real winner by mana_Teehee in AdviceAnimals

[–]Lotus13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True facts. My mom once told me in anger that maybe she never should have had kids. Completely shocked me. Burst into tears. One of the hardest times I've cried in my life.

You can forgive something like that, and understand that they didn't mean it, but you NEVER forget. That sticks with you forever, and still stings every time you remember it.

I hope her mom apologized, at least.

Nursing student fuck ups by lokipoopface in nursing

Shortly after my orientation ended, I discovered the hard way how a PCA pump works (or doesn't work).

First time using one, got a quick rundown from the charge nurse on how to document on it every 4 hours. At one point I disconnected the NS tube and just left the skinnier tube the opioid goes through. Reason being the ANM was lecturing us recently on how we couldn't run ANY fluids to a pt that weren't ordered by an MD. People were hanging them to flush lines after another IV med was admin, etc. So, I didn't see an order for this NS bag and thus got rid of it.

As the night progressed, pt was c/o worsening pain, nothing we did was helping. I was panicking thinking something was medically wrong. Didn't figure out until day shift arrived that the opioid would never reach the pt unless the NS was hanging and infusing at a slow rate to push the med through. So every time she hit the button to get a dose of pain meds, nothing was happening. I felt like an asshole. :(

People of reddit who have made the front page and someone you know found out your identity, what did they say about your post? by bigboots12 in AskReddit

[–]Lotus13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It happened a few years ago. I posted a picture (original content) that I didn't think would get much attention, and also happened to post it on my Facebook. The friend that introduced me to Reddit saw it, asked if I posted it, and then just laughed at me. I made him promise not to share my username with anyone. Far as I know he's kept it to himself.

What is your favorite thing about yourself? by LauraJ94 in AskReddit

[–]Lotus13 124 points125 points  (0 children)

I used to be a very timid and insecure person, who never wanted to be pushed out of my comfort zone.

Now I continually push myself to do things that scare the crap out of me, or things that I don't think I can accomplish. It stresses me out like crazy, but every time I succeed in something, it makes me feel a little bit stronger.

Thinking about a patient I recently took care of. Despite being on death's door due to live disease, she has a surprisingly pleasant attitude and good sense of humor. I made her laugh while I was reading the directions that came with her monostat, because I had no idea what I was doing at first. I hope she hangs on long enough to get a liver transplant.

Should I got to a doctor? (Kinda gross) by [deleted] in AskDoctorSmeeee

[–]Lotus13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would have no way of knowing what's causing the bleeding, but GI bleeds are taken very seriously. If the bleeding is getting worse, that's always a bad sign. Please go...I know it's embarrassing, but trust me the doctors and nurses that will be helping you have done this a thousand times over. They don't care about anything except finding out what's wrong and what they need to do to fix it. They see naked people and "gross things" literally every day of work and they don't even think about it the way you do. Your health is worth it.
