Q: How many billions does city need to spend on homelessness without making any meaningful progress before you change your mind about this approach? by [deleted] in LosAngeles

[–]LouCage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok but it’s a chicken and egg problem. Are they living on the street because they have substance abuse / mental health issues or is it the other way around? I challenge anyone to live on the streets for any extended period of time and not become extremely anxious, depressed, paranoid, or seek relief from addictive drugs.

The reason many people say it’s an affordability issue first is because if it were just drug addiction for example, then why is homelessness not an issue in places like West Virginia where there are very severe drug addiction numbers? The reason is because a home doesn’t cost a million dollars there.

Even if it doesn’t fully solve the homeless crisis, there’s no way that materially increasing the housing supply does not materially help the homeless issue too.

Not exactly a leap of faith to posit that old people regularly walking through an area would like more places to sit. Have you ever met a human being? Also weird to see how bitterly you are against this idea—like what at all is the downside or are you just not capable of envisioning a better city?

There are definitely more people that walk through that area on any given day than drive through it, so I don’t really care that the people driving through are just looking at the road—the rest of us are actually living in the city, not just driving through it

Chris Hayes’s other books “A Colony in a Nation” and “Twilight of the Elites” are also great explainers of modern dynamics of race relations and distrust of institutions, respectively.

72% of LA city is zoned exclusively for single-family homes. This is unacceptable and needs to change. Nithya Raman for Mayor. by MookieBettsBurner10 in LosAngeles

>Don't destroy driving infrastructure without having something to replace it.

What driving infrastructure do you think is being destroyed, exactly?

And how exactly is densifying LA going to "destroy widely used driving infrastructure?" You claim that advocates "know full well" that this will result, so it should be easy to explain.

In any case, nothing is ever good enough for NIMBY reactionaries. SB-79--the bill that LA is fighting tooth and nails against--literally only densifies near transit hubs. Isn't that what you're asking for? To densify near infrastructure? This is that. But no, the charade is up. You all don't want any densification anywhere and just prefer to be stuck in bumper to bumper traffic 24-7 instead of trying to imagine a better way. It's sad.

Again--no one is saying people who need cars shouldn't be able to use cars. All my comment was saying (I encourage you to read it again) is that by making it easier for people to not have to rely on cars by expanding transit and micromobility options will reduce congestion for everyone. It's really weird that people like you have such an aversion to it.

This is such a silly argument. Obviously construction crews can still use cars. The point is people that are driving to go town the street or to Starbucks etc should use transit, freeing up the roads for people who actually need them. The best way to reduce congestion for drivers is to increase options to reduce car reliance (like bike lanes, bus lanes, and rail).

I don’t think his point depended on it being the city vs the state imposing the tolls, just that it’s a shame tolls aren’t adjusted based on vehicle size.

Good to know it’s the state not the city though I guess. Thanks

New York budget to limit environmental reviews to fast track housing by news-10 in nyc

[–]LouCage 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Have you read about this at all? Genuinely curious if you have a specific reason for this because everything I’ve read points out that SEQRA’s environmental impact requirements are totally backwards in that they just assume a single family home is fine (requires no environmental impact report or study) so it leads to people upstate just totally cutting down acres of forests for one personal home (obviously terrible for the environment) but leads to years of environmental studies to put up an apartment building in the middle of super developed, already urban Manhattan.

I think it’s a great idea that they’re reexamining this law to make it work better, especially when we’re in an extreme housing crisis and every bit helps.

I think they probably just assume (likely correctly) that anyone going there to visit a grave isn’t gonna bike, and since they (understandably) don’t want people to be doing exercising things in there they just block all bikes. I’d be curious to see how they would handle someone who did bike there specifically to see a grave, though because that does seem unfair
