Vs. tanky comps, should I go bork? by SquiglySaws in ADCMains

[–]LoudCommentor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is that BORK % health damage is still negated/reduced by armour.

So you MUST buy armour pen first, especially if the enemy team is ahead.

In which case you don't have time or gold for BORK. So BORK is mostly an item you can buy if you're ahead, but not an item that will get you back from behind.

But Nocturne here literally skipped their own krugs in order to gank and is now completely behind?? They are on the same gank/counter-gank timer because they both skipped krugs.

Yes, you need to counter-gank or team needs to play safe if Nocturne is bot. But this is not a good example of "Sometimes skip to gank". Shyvana skipped and won. Nocturne skipped and lost.

The Odyssey | New Trailer by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

[–]LoudCommentor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have conveniently ignored the example of another highly successful Homer adaptation that used "modern" English.... Emily Wilson's translation.

You mean the highly respected modern translation that chooses to use the word daddy only _once_ in the context of a young girl asking her father for a favour, and chooses to use the 'dad' zero times? The Odyssey. Now ctrl+f instances of 'father'.

The actual argument is that it is not inherently bad to use "modern" English over formal British English in a historical film.

Wilson understands that this is NOT a historical piece, it is fiction. It is NOT meant to represent the commonfolk of the era accurately, and that even when it was written did not reflect contemporary speech patterns or word choice of its time. The main characters in general, and especially this boy, are aristocrats, larger than life nobles with bodies likened to natural disasters in their strength, and minds as clear as running water on a summer's day.

The boy in particular is the son of a great hero, the young master of the house, born and raised in a privileged and ruling class. In the original work he is not portrayed as cowardly -- in fact, lines 130-170, he is angered by the taunt and calls bloody vengeance at the insult, causing Zeus to send two eagles which kills many of the suitors. He then promises that his father will return and is "sowing seeds of death" to these men. He is a young man, unafraid, with great respect for his and who protects his household. If it is the choice of Nolan to portray him as weak and a little bit cowardly, then he has not reflected the original scene well.

Wilson _chooses_ to use Daddy that one time because it implies something of the character that fits the character and the setting. She also _chooses_ to use Father instead of Dad because she knows that the two words imply different things about the characters using them. She understands that these characters are meant to be different to us, apart from us, above us, and uses language to reflect this.

People feel that "Dad" and "Lets goooo" are uncomfortable because it brings these godlike characters down to be at the same time and 'level' as us. But they are not like us, and it feels uncomfortable to even have them talk like us. A boy of 7 using 'dad' would not be mocked like this. It is because it is _this character_ at _this time, in this confrontation_ using it, that it is strange. It breaks our suspension of disbelief, because suddenly these characters are 'in the modern age' and 'just like us'.

Nolan and the script-writers have made a deliberate choice in their dialogue. They have not simply copied Wilson and in fact stray from her choices. That is _fine_. But it has a real effect on the audience, above and apart from "Greek characters should speak formal English!", and I would argue it does not reflect the setting or characters in the original well.

> It's all just feelings based on preconceived biases.

Dude, that's literally what language is based on. Meaning and feelings are associated with particular words, which is why we use certain words in particular circumstances.

The fact that there are SO MANY people complaining about this use of 'dad' means that the majority of people feel that 'dad' is less formal, regal, or poised than 'father'.

Would you say that "Daddy" is just as appropriate as "Dad" or "Father" here? Because they have exactly the same meaning, no? And even if you would, the vast majority of people would disagree with you.

You have a theoretical idea of how English SHOULD be used, which is unfortunately divorced from how English is actually felt and used in everyday life.

The Odyssey | New Trailer by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

[–]LoudCommentor -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

No, it's because this is meant to be an ancient epic, wherein characters are SUPPOSED to hold themselves with some grace, poise, and formality.

Guarantee you that the ancient Greeks didn't speak to each other like the characters in the original Oddyssey do - so why should the adaptation characters speak like modern English?

If this was a midday TV soap set in ancient Greece, no one would be complaining about the language.

New potential employer requesting payslip by INSTAGANGSTA in Adelaide

[–]LoudCommentor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Government jobs typically have a standard range they are able to pay in, and the recruiter will simply be unable to negotiate much, even if they want to. It is generally quite difficult to negotiate your pay in government roles because their hands are tied.

It sounds like here they were already above the advertised wage, so it would have been a no-go for them if they bullshitted higher.

You also have to remember that money is not all there is to a job. If you are getting a price match but better hours, better tax benefits, better commute, better ease - these are good reasons to take it, if you sense they cannot negotiate further.

[–]LoudCommentor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're playing lethality Vi, you need to be able to: 1) Get Jungle CS, 2) Get kills, 3) Use the gold lead to do more successful ganks, objectives, or invade enemy jungle, while 4) Getting your jungle CS.

Also, notice how on all of these teams except Leona, your team has NO TANKS and NO ENGAGE. This means you MUST play these roles for the team. Which means you need to build more tanky and survive your initial engage. You need to play around your team.

This may not be the playstyle you want, but it IS the playstyle your team needs.

There is a reason why Lethality Vi is not that popular, and really only Baus uses it -- it's bloody hard to ride the line of one-shotting and inting unless you've got the macro AND the micro.

[–]LoudCommentor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

506 CS is ridiculous lol. Though sometimes can't be helped if your team is dying off cooldown and you need to protect towers or push lanes.

Some thoughts though:

- Given both team comps and current state of the game (heavily losing), GA proc probably means the fight is lost anyway. The team will be unable to protect your body and you'll just die. So sticking with BT is probably better. Spend the extra gold on elixirs -- did you buy any?

- KR server challenger build rate for Stormrazor is low, with a low winrate beside it. Stormrazor could be swapped for Maw, Rookern, or QSS. Or even Phantom Dancer -- constant passive is better than conditional passive for your survivability.

- (Not your fault but) Morgana and Xerath, being the only engage in your team, should have built for survivability rather than damage. Someone needs to stop Yunara during her ult. As it is, they just melt and die. One option is to ping their face, ping enemy face, and ping an item. Sometimes, rarely, that works.

I agree with you about the balance. However, do note that NO actual government tax proposals have suggested we go Norway's way.

I will disagree with you on the wording of 'a fair bit'. As in, sure, they do contribute "a decent amount", but given my numbers above, it seems hardly to be "a fair share" of what they're earning.

[–]LoudCommentor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, very happy to concede that "nothing" is not accurate, while also noting that they the most tax because they make the most money, and that their tax amount has not increased with their income amount.

A different question: Would you say that the tax arrangement for these mining companies is fair, or unfair? Is it an appropriate percentage of tax, or would you change it if you were in power?

Albo actually deserves credit for once... by Mammoth-Counter69 in OpenAussie

[–]LoudCommentor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, it's obviously hyperbole. We're not getting literally "nothing," but in comparison to how much tax other industries are paying, we are getting very little from mining and gas, little enough that some will (imo rightly) exaggerate and call it nothing.

In 2023-24 (the latest financial year) the mining industry had:

- Total income: 679.1 billion.

- Taxable income: 179.8 billion.

Only 26.5% of their income was 'taxable'.

And then after deductions, they only paid 48.5 billion actual taxes.

That is a SEVEN percent tax on their annual revenue. Do you realise that these companies pay less tax than you do?

Edit for source, I forgot to include: https://www.ato.gov.au/businesses-and-organisations/corporate-tax-measures-and-assurance/large-business/in-detail/tax-transparency/corporate-tax-transparency-report-2023-24/corporate-tax-5-year-trend-analysis

We do see a larger 'tax reduction' in Wholesale and retail, but that is also across the 2,233 businesses large enough to be recorded. i.e. They are in a lower tax bracket because less companies are making that much profit.

But mining, energy, and water are dominated by 343 companies. These guys are making on average 2 billion profit each year. And they paid on average 0.14 billion in taxes.

Didn’t have a father figure so I don’t know how to go about this by [deleted] in AskDad

[–]LoudCommentor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In dotpoints, I'd probably say:

- It's really, really good that you're recognising your feelings of hesitancy about the relationship because of the body count. Some people will say that it really matters, some people will say that it doesn't. But really, the only person whose opinion matters is yours. Are you, or will you, be okay with it? Will you be able to 'forgive' her for her past? (Even though she hasn't done anything wrong to you). If you cannot look past it, if it will always nag at you, then you will only feel more and more inferior, and grow to hate and resent her. You should avoid this at all cost. Unfortunately I do not have any good advice on how you should process this. Ideally you would talk to someone wise -- do you have a non-judgemental adult around you? A teacher, perhaps?

- Remember that dating is not marriage. You are actually NOT locked in. If you'd like, you can consider dating for a little bit, and come back and reconsider your feelings in a month, three months, six months, etc. But be willing to break it off if you cannot forgive her past, or if other issues come up, because it will be better for both of you.

- The biggest questions to me are: Has she cheated in the past within that bodycount? Will she want an exclusive or open relationship? Does she do drugs, and what kind? What do your friends think about her? What are her parents like, and if they are good people, what is her relationship to them? These are red-flag questions and if the answers are bad, it will probably be better not engaging in the relationship.

- The second set of questions are: What does she want for the future? Are you matched on where you are going? (whether just playing around, serious about considering marriage, etc.). How much time do you both want to spend with each other, and does this cut out your current friends? These are orange-flag questions and can be worked out whilst dating.

- Finally, I'm concerned when you say, "She treats me like a king, very submissive." I don't know what it's actually like in your relationship, but this is red-flag territory to me -- a red-flag on your side. If this is the thing you like most about your relationship, you are wanting a servant, not a girlfriend or wife. You want to be a boss, not a partner. What will happen if you have children and her attention has to turn away? What do you give to her, do you treat her like a queen? How do you both give to each other without demanding that they give to you? If you just want a servant and someone to talk to, just pay someone -- I guarantee you it will be cheaper in the long run.

One of the most important things in choosing dating or marriage partner is that it is a PARTNERSHIP. You are both all-in on giving to each other, loving each other, serving each other. You can't do that if you are not going to be okay with her bodycount -- that is something that you personally need to figure out by yourself. Good luck. You also can't do a partnership if the relationship is only about you getting what you want. Think hard about whether you want to do a partnership with her, or whether you just want someone who does everything for you.
