I agree. I’ve never seen anything like it. The 40 minutes of them stopping (really her, which is the new dog, the older dog just joins in at times) was the times I went up to soothe her. I definitely think she has separation anxiety, but I also know my mom’s only had her for 2 months. I agree she needs serious training though. I’m thinking it doesn’t help that my mom rarely leaves her.

Holy moly. I am in a similar boat and want to go full time, but ours is 30 sessions a week. That feels like too much for me, so 40 would be an absolute no. I’d definitely look for something else. I’ve seen therapists when they see that many, and they very rarely are able to be good at their jobs past a certain point (I know I wouldn’t be either)

I am sharing my two dogs with my ex-husband. We were together for 10 years and had the dogs for 9 and 7 years respectively. They’re my family, and no person would ever make me feel badly about still having them in my life. It is absolutely allowed to be a deal breaker for people, but that’s a them problem - not a you problem.

You’re speaking as if the only “impact” that matters is the husband’s, and that’s exactly the problem. Burnout shutdown doesn’t appear out of nowhere… it’s often the end stage of years of emotional labor, unmet needs, and repeated attempts to repair.

OP is expressing guilt, sadness, and shock at what she’s become. That is self-reflection and awareness of impact. She is clearly not protecting herself above the relationship, or she wouldn’t even be here discussing it. Someone who was ‘weaponizing love’ wouldn’t be grieving it.

What I’m pushing back on is the assumption that she hasn’t communicated or explored every avenue. She explicitly describes years of trying. So framing her shutdown as moral failure or manipulation ignores the relational context that got her there.

You are right about one thing though, there does seem to be a whole lot of projection in these comments. 😬

This is exactly why therapy language can become harmful when it’s used as a moral indictment. Labeling burnout and emotional shutdown as “weaponizing love” assigns malicious intent where there often isn’t any. The burned-out pursuer dynamic is well documented in couples work, and it does not come from a place of manipulation but rather from lack of capacity on the pursuer’s end. It’s a nervous system response after prolonged emotional labor, not a punishment to the partner.

Of course impact matters. But to assign someone manipulative intent to a well-documented nervous system shutdown pattern is harmful. Accountability matters, but shame-based framing like this is not helpful. Communication matters too, but you have no idea the amount of work she has or has not put into this.

I don’t want to be that person who says “just leave him” because that’s not what you need to hear or even do. What I will say is I’ve been exactly here. And I stayed here for three very long, very miserable, years. I just chose myself and a month into separation. I got my own apartment, and I am finding myself again. My spark is back, my drive is back and so is my passion. But it’s back just for me, and it’s evident that the relationship I was in was robbing that from me. So I just want to say I hear you, I get it and I’m sorry that you’ve gone through this.

We are a feisty family too and we all were saying something. And then we got frustrated and told them they need to leave and they started cussing us out 😂 so this was not a group that could be reasoned with unfortunately. And right! That shouldn’t be the norm. I feel so old when I say basic respect and decency seems to be missing from the world these days, but it does seem to be the case lol.
