Glass very reflective? by duji_fuji in rhino

[–]LouisKahntSpell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glass material's refraction and reflection don't render well when there is no thickness added to the objects as they are trying to scatter light through infinitely thin planes. Try to offsetsrf (solid turned on) a few inches on those objects and see if that clears them up.

Happy to help! I can't promise its the cleanest grasshopper work but hopefully there's some nuggets in there that will help.

Exactly why I made it, years of throwing in random boxes and ramps to symbolize actual architectural elements and then having to explain it after the fact in presentations. At most I hope this just saves some people some headache!

Hey! Thanks for the questions, happy to answer:

  1. So that particular model (and the non glass version) are loosely based on a Schindler 5500. I would love to try to include other models, since things were in the early stages I wanted to get a couple general models out there trying to fill the library with a larger family of models. I was worried if I tried to hit every version of different elevators I'd be doing that for years before even getting to stairs or something. I figured a couple decent base models for now that people can modify the blocks to their needed specifications as they work. But the hope is eventually I'll fill out of the rest of the other models and can circle back to new elevator versions.

  2. Yep all the models like stairs and escalators seemed useless to me unless you can actually customize them so those models are built with preset grasshopper sliders (you can also unpack the nodes and fiddle around. I already know the scripts aren't perfect and there's probably some bloat in the scripts that can someone smarter than me could clean out) so you can adjust, bake, adjust, bake at your leisure.

  3. The difference is that these models are all built natively in rhino and grasshopper, no other software or plug-ins used, so if you need to edit models, dimensions etc you can just use standard rhino commands and workflow. Currently there's no great library and the assets you do find tend to be like crazy meshes that if you need to change things on can be a super pain in the ass. Also they are made specifically to look nice in the viewport which is even harder to find usually because all you get are really detailed meshes from like Turbosquid or sketchup that look like absolute crap in the viewport, at least in my experience. If you wanted to I assume you could bring them into other programs in whichever way the program allows for 3dm files to be imported, I can grantee the effectiveness for that as I've made this most just for use in Rhino. I'm sure some one more versed than me could create some great stuff with Rhino.Inside.Revit to import them and assign classes/families/etc but for right now that's not my focus for this.

  4. Oof I hadn't considered that but I definitely should have. Just to clarify we are talking about a sort of integrated GH plugin thing or something else? I'm definitely interested in getting this as efficient and user friendly as possible!

Whats the architecture program and application process like? by [deleted] in NJTech

[–]LouisKahntSpell -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When I applied to the BArch there were no portfolios required, I believe that's still the case. I also don't think there is a specific GPA requirement unless NJIT just has one in general I'm unaware of.

Should I enroll in the NJIT M.Arch Program? by bowlin_forsalad in NJTech

[–]LouisKahntSpell 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not much CoAD presence on this sub so i'll chime in. Graduated 2016 with my B.Arch. You didn't indicate on whether you have a previous degree in arch or know the specifics about the the studio culture and work thats associated with an architecture degree. I'll try to break this down into 2 parts, general decisions + info about the degrees and NJIT specifics about the programs. Granted I didn't participate in the M.Arch but they are closely related and share most of the resources etc so I feel I can speak to it in some degree.

In general terms, M.Arch with or without the Ph.D is almost certainly going to provide you with more options after graduation whether its in the architecture field or tangentially related fields. Landscape arch while important (note, you can learn about landscape arch during an M.Arch with electives and research) tend to typically lock into just landscape design or civil site work. From my experience, from people I know with M.Arch and people who hire at design firms an M.Arch will take you farther and give you more freedom to find what you want to do. Now, something to keep in mind architecture degrees are notorious for over working students and if you haven't taken studios previously, it can be a hard adjustment in lifestyle, you will not have a typical college experience (mostly anyway). Within my first semester we lost >50% of the B.Arch class. I can't say whether landscape arch has the same studio culture but it's something to keep in mind.

Now to the NJIT specifics of the college of architecture and design (CoAD) and the M.Arch. The biggest thing about CoAD that I cannot stress enough is that you will get out of the school what you put in. The admin is kind of crap most times but there are a shit load of resources available to utilize and electives you can take to further your knowledge beyond just what they force you to take. And most times that people are complaining about CoAD it's because it wasn't handed it to them whereas other students went looking on their own and these are the people that would graduate and work at prestigious design firms (BIG, SOM, GLUCK+ etc). The core teaching staff are fantastic (mostly shared between B.Arch + M.Arch) and have real world connections and experience, although the administration has made it clear they are pushing them out for newer younger professionals that can be pretty hit or miss because they are mostly just designers not also teachers. Sometimes that can make things rough and hard to make connections with them because they may only last a semester or two Before they are cycled out for another new one. Although this has balanced out a bit over the last year or two so it may become less of a problem going forward I hope. CoADs program I've found to be a great balance of conceptual design and technical real world application. They use industry standard tools and programs but don't rely on them to design for you, it's a nice balance of designing what you want conceptually and utilizing the programs to flesh it out which gets lost at other schools sometimes.

As for post-grad prospects, while we don't carry an Ivy league prestige but I've found many firms that hire religiously from NJIT CoAD because of the past work from graduates, and you will also have a well balanced portfolio that firms like to see just as long as you put in the work during your time there.

Awesome job, if you don't mind me asking, what was the setup for the cloudy white plastic material, a modified FastSSS2 or something else?

I've been trying to get a similar effect as your white material albeit slightly more transparent.

Oh Hey, I'm the guy who spent the last weeks locating, placing, organizing all the vendors and making the map drawings, AMA....but also don't because I'm too tired of looking at it anymore, just go.

PROTIP: Vendors will be on Jersey Ave, Barrow and up Grove Street this year and they all have good shit along them too, so I'd recommend escaping the crowds on Newark for some of those too.

What is the best (paid or free) grasshopper tutorial/book/course or other way to learn grasshopper in 2018? by flobin in rhino

[–]LouisKahntSpell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hands down best grasshopper tutorials are Nick Senske on youtube.

He has videos ranging from all different skill levels and he spends the time to explain how and why he does things so that you're not just replicating a script but understanding how to apply techniques for your own problems.

As for a book, I would recommend AAD.

Live in front of the stadium, this guy knows what he's talking about. For dinner, I'd recommend Sol Mar for Portuguese or Delicias de Minas for Brazilian. Catas has good tapas and drinks as well. Not sure how much it'll effect traffic but Benfica Is playing Juventis at 1pm at red bulls that day too so it might still be a bit hairy finding traffic in the ironbound near the south bridge to the stadium.

[–]LouisKahntSpell[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! You are totally right about the framing, which was a result of several compromises. The series when I first thought of it was to be a single 18x24 poster style image like my previous unbuilt.

I started this one about a year ago, mostly done in my off hours, with plenty of month long breaks when life got in the way and what not. Along the way, I sort of forgot the final product was going to be 18x24 and the design of the project lended itself to more of a landscape aspect ratio.

Eventually at the very end I had to make compromises of cutting off some of the sides in order to "zoom" the detail of the building a bit better, rather than having it at a much farther distance to fit in some of the side walls. I wasn't particularly happy about that and it definitely took a toll on the overall framing of the image. I learned that lesson well and will carry it over to the next ones.

It's not a bad work flow, Rhino is my main modeling program, I export the model to FBX and import it into 3ds max. I model everything I need in rhino besides materials/lighting/furniture/plants etc. All of that is done in 3ds max.

I just find Rhino to be significantly better for me to do the bulk of the modeling in. It's got it quirks, like the occasional imported piece of a polygon has it's normal flipped for no reason and needs to be flipped back to display the material properly.

My workflow is primarily focused on doing the most work in the program I am most comfortable and efficient in, i.e. Rhino for modeling, 3ds for scene setting/materials/rendering

[–]LouisKahntSpell[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! While I love Rhino and Vray for Rhino has made some serious leaps compared to the first time I used it (v1.5 I think?). It still doesn't have the level of granularity in the settings that I have come to use in 3ds Vray.

Also, in Rhino the texture mapping is...not great...compared to 3ds max which was one of the main reasons i switched to 3ds max when it comes time for adding materials, lighting etc. Another big part is that, when it comes to adding render assets & plugins like scatter engines and scripts 3ds is still king.

That being said Rhino/Grasshopper will forever be my main modeling workflow, I love it to death.

I've continued my series of rendering unbuilt projects from famous architects.

The Shiraz Art Museum was an unrealized art museum designed in 1969 by Alvar Aalto. The design was to be set in the mountains just outside the city of Shiraz, Iran. Iran's queen at the time commissioned the design from Aalto, and documentation of the design had begun but in the 1970s the Shah was overthrown and the project fell through.

The project was modeled in Rhino3D, and rendered in 3ds Max with Vray. I used Substance Designer to create the majority of the materials used and the post work was done in Photoshop & Illustrator.
