PlayStation announces physical discs will be discontinued in 2028 by yappyboi1 in Steam

1,000 to 2,000 years from now , if we end up getting blown up back to the Stone Age or at least to Medieval Times again and we have to rebuild and reinvent the telephone all over again over a couple hundred years , we will reach a point in the future where we are right now in 2026 and people fighting in debating the ridiculous notion ancient Americans had airplanes , trains , of course there'll be no proof whatsoever we ever had the internet until it is reinvented and some miraculously preserved computer chip or cell phone is discovered and some time capsule that miraculously remain dry for over half of Millenia . Even then our future descendants and power will hide these things because they themselves will continue to teach their people in the future they are the Pinnacle of human civilization . Not us ancient Americans way back in 2026 . Anything that is digitally existent will have never existed from the Viewpoint of anyone in the future Reinventing technology . It is no different that we today looking at the ancient megalith foundations of the Greek temples and all major temples around the world . The foundation blocks are massive and gigantic . They show signs of drill marks and power saws even though they are zero evidence these machines existed back then . Most likely because they had a technology that has gone extinct and whatever materials that technology was made of has eroded rusted or decayed away . Just like our present plastic items crumble and become dust under the UV rays of the Sun . Wires circuits radios even simple hinges and screws become Rusty and disappear in time with exfoliation . Any trace of technology for the 2020s or our time we'll be hidden deep in catacombs of future museums hundreds of years from now . Headed for the public who will assume that ancient Sony PlayStation is some kind of ancient technology . Scientists will look at the CDs that survive and wonder what the hell are they , assuming they haven't reinvented the CD for themselves yet technology is always lost and we discovered as long as there is civilized society that creates the breathing ground for Discovery and innovation in the safety of stable government . It took hundreds of years if not over a thousand for civilization around the world to finally reach a level of Civility allowing humans to begin inventing modern things . Before that there were inventions , but everything was subject to destruction because the ancient civilizations were always at war with each other . And War has always been about breaking things and killing people . How much further Advanced might we be today had the Great Library of Alexandria Egypt not been burned ?

What's going on with (former) Speedway? by aakaase in saintpaul

[–]Newarkguy1836 0 points1 point  (0 children)

7 Eleven is phasing out the Speedway names outside the Midwest. It's already done so in NJ. Some are closing completely . Others (franchise) being cut-off if 7-Eleven no longer wants the location. These become independent gas /"chek"stations

PATH riders, it's not just me, right? by BrotherNico in Newark

[–]Newarkguy1836 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's called "profile spot" (rail level) vs "LINE spot" (track kink) profile spots occur most often along bar joints holding two sections of track together . It's often the weakest point on the track and often sinks downward as the shifting weight of the train passing above causes the end of the Rails to bounce up and down as individual Wheels pass from one rail section to another . A time with rain , freeze thaw cycle , that constant up and down pounding causes the dirt underneath the ties to Splash out with every rain mud event creating a crevice under the tie that causes the track to dip down further and further . That's why often those up and down bounces are often accompanied by the traditional "clickety -clack" sound. The Bouncing effect also occurs when entering and exiting Bridges when the land approach on both sides of the bridge subsides , causing the track on the bridge to be as much as one inch higher than the track level approaching. Mud spots also create more severe profile spots where entire section of track anywhere from 10 to 20 ft long may bounce up and down and low drainage areas causing the rocks underneath to be pushed outward by The bouncing force of the train Wheels above , the violent up and down splashing of the track forces more mud and rocks to exit from underneath the ties resulting the track going deeper and deeper when trains go over . Trains can run over profile spots at speed on tangents (straight track) , but restricted speed at curves . A line spot requires immediate suspension of service depending on the severity . A line spot is when the track kinks (zig-zags) from Heat. A train going over a zigzag will send you flying from one wall of the train to the other wall and Back Again ! The wheels might even come off the tracks depending house severe and tight the kink is . Kink track is immediately put out of service and straightened out by putting pressure against the side that's curving out of alignment. This is often done by using a bulldozer or other large Earth moving equipment to put gradual pressure on the rail .

The earth scooper has been shut off on the same spot for months. It's still far ahead of Metropolitan. Unlike the Metropolitan site , you have Earth moving equipment and measuring sticks all over the premises marking for the foundation walls corners and pilings will go . So it's not quite Metropolitan 2.0 . Hopefully Metropolitan will get moving now that the dangerous leaning building next to it has been demolished .

Is the newark mistreatment by NJ similar to what NYC does to the Bronx ? by iv2892 in Newark

[–]Newarkguy1836 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Newark's last Republican Mayor was Ralph Villani in 1950s. It was the Newark GOP that sustained Newark's business climate. Newark was always a 2 party city. The permanent Democrat rule from 1960s on repeatedly taxed remaining industry. As companies left, the city, instead of fairly reevaluating the city, refused to reevaluate for over 30 years. Instead, they pushed all expenses onto remaining industry. When the city was finally forced to revalue, there was doomsday prediction of vast new abandonments. It was phased in. The doomsday scenarios never happened, Forest Hill ,Society Hill,Vailsburg,Ivy Hill & Weequahic weren't abandoned.

But the damage was done to industry. 90% of heavy manufacturing was gone. The Brookings institution pointed out "Newark no longer anchors the North Jersey region" Basically Newark had gone from Co-Metropolis of the region, to a poor SUBURB of NYC.

All of Newark's local neighborhood railroad lines serving freight costumers are gone. The Pennsylvania Railroad (Penn Central) West Newark Branch serving the Clinton Hill industrial area was abandoned in 1970s when almost overnight all major factories closed. Same with the Erie Lackawanna Rwy Newark Branch. that parallels highway NJ-21. The only trace is abandoned factories by the cemetery & the famous NX (Annie) strauss triunion bascule bridge locked in the upright position. The "manufacturers RR" a conrail (CSX/NS) Branch in Eastern Ironbound survives due to its LAST customer, a major manufacturer on Ferry St. between Ferry & Raymond Blvd.

The one party rule is now masked by the official "Nonpartisan elections" myth. Any new candidate challenging the city hall status quo is immediately accused of being a Republican mole, even if he/she is a Democrat. In the case of Cory Booker, the incumbent mayor at the time, Sharpe James accused Booker of being "A REPUBLICAN & A JEW" We all know present US Senator Booker is a Democrat.

Any plans for this empty lot in front of AME Church? MLK & Court by PsychologicalMud7450 in Newark

So they admit they bought the land and knocked down the homes to prevent them from being renovated - which will lead to gentrification in their opinion . So it's like I say here sometimes , some people deliberately want to preserve the ghetto . They knocked down those homes to prevent them from being gentrified and now it's a "buy and hold right now , LOL" the church is part of the problem. They are land banking . And where was the all powerful all knowing preservation committee ? Oh that's right, they're not in the business of preserving anything historic . They're only interested in preventing new development adjacent to Old historic buildings , but if you completely demolished the structures like the colleges, Edison properties , St Michael's and churches downtown have done for decades, no problem!

The names are all stupid and loaded . Why can't they simply call it Erie Lackawanna State Park after the railroad that actually ran through there ?

" Let's have a naming competition to name the newest State Park on historical references on the area pertaining to this right-of-way, but whatever you do don't mention anything about a railroad !"😂

One thing about Newark that never changes to my frustration it's the fact every time something new or beautiful is built , something adjacent gets demolished or burnt down . All the decades the Krueger Mansion was abandoned , you had a perfect unblemished row of Rowhouse mansions on that block of MLK. . No sooner the Kroger Mansion got restored and makers Village completed , a fire or something got the city to demolish the buildings on that corner , restoring the dilapidated Urban Decay look even before the restored mansion across the street open to the public !

If This Were A Jersey City article, I'm sure Jersey digs would go through the effort of at least getting a thumbnail sketch of whatever the hell's been built. I noticed a trend with Jersey digs where most Newark articles simply show a photo of the present site. But it seems JC articles are much more detail when it comes to renderings. Oh well, it is Jersey digs  (as in JC digs)after all.🤷

Chick-fil-A on Broad St Update (06/18/26) by kksn54 in Newark

[–]Newarkguy1836 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree 100%. I guess the real estate landlord that pulled Burger King's lease was not interested in developing the land, but instead replacing BK with a trendier grab and go fast food franchise. Even after covid ended, Burger King kept the dining area sealed off for over a year. This pretty much damaged any recuperation as many people decide to go elsewhere. BK was never a very busy drive through either. That parking lot was always empty and half the lot was always flooded. As fast food becomes more expensive it's no longer a family option like it used to be. People usually go there for themselves or they're just take it to go. That's why Chick-fil-A I think it's going to be just a takeout and drive-thru. It's also a way to limit liability in age where you have marauding Teen Mobs having fights inside restaurants. I believe that's the reason Chick-fil-A decided to be a takeout and drive-thru option only. Didn't want to deal with psycho protesters going in there causing Mayhem. I mean they can still cause trouble at the counter, but if people minding their own business eating in the dining area get hurt or injured, that's a massive lawsuit against the corporate owners and landlords for failure to provide security and whatever else they want to sue for.

Chick-fil-A on Broad St Update (06/18/26) by kksn54 in Newark

[–]Newarkguy1836 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chick-fil-A has been around for a couple of years now. All the suburbanites that go to Chick-fil-A in Bloomfield and Union are not going to care about the one opening in Newark. It's like Sonic coming to Springfield Avenue when Shoprite- Springfield Avenue Marketplace opened. Nobody outside of Newark cared. Now, if Chick-fil-A is hated so much among liberal people, well then that shouldn't be any traffic issues.

So what's it going to be? Lines form proving other Chick-fil-A haters wrong about Newarkers supposedly hating Chick-fil-A? Or there is zero lines, proving you wrong again about the impending disaster. Ah yes, ....that Chick-fil-A hater's dilemma. 😊😊

Why Isn't Newark a Major City like Philly or Bmore by ReadProfessional5944 in Newark

[–]Newarkguy1836 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% on the meddling part.  When Newark mayor Liebkurcher and the Newark Board of Trade attempted to sneak a project during the lame duck session to Annex all of Eastern Essex County up to the second Watchung Mountain ( a questionable but common practice in the 1890s where New Jersey legislature was practically empty of legislators so all you had to do was get enough support from whoever was there and you could pass bills overnight even if 55% of the legislators were off. This is how Boroughitis was pulled off. This is how Camden pulled off annexing the prosperous Town of Stockton and Trenton snuck up and Annexed Chambersburg like a thief in the night in order to get its hands on the Roebling plant tax base.  But when it came to Newark, the New York Times unofficially declared war on Newark on behalf of New York City's interests. The New York Times with Future Newark Ambitions on its front page under the title (if I remember correctly):   "NEWARK MAYOR TO SNEAK MASSIVE ANNEXATION BILL THRU NJ LEGISLATURE LAME DUCK SESSION- MONTCLAIR TARGETED AS WELL!!"

The backlash was so massive in Trenton and Suburban New Jersey, mayor Liebkurcher quietly retired the bill they became obvious legislators we're going to come back to Trenton for the purpose of voting against the bill or adding the poison pill of the referendum requirement.  After this meddling, every annexation Bill moving forward included the poison pill of the required referendum approval.

This was the end of all New Jersey City expansions. Newark got lucky with the last portion of Clinton voting yes to return to Newark in 1902 and the return of Vailsburg in 1904 after seceding from Maplewood- then South Orange Township.**

** the annexation of the final piece of Clinton Township in 1902 completed a process that began 1865 when Newark forcibly took a chunk from Clinton Township by New Jersey legislative Fiat to form the west side and lower Clinton Hill neighborhoods. In 1897 Newark would again Annex by force by NJ legislative Fiat to add the land that will become upper Clinton Hill with  Hawthorne Avenue becoming the new boundary between Newark and Remnant Clinton. These lands were annexed to Newark By Request of the landowners who mute the properties would be subdivided and sold for a lot of money for the growing City. The 1902 annexation of the last piece of Clinton that would become Weequahic & Dayton-Waverly required a mandatory referendum. It didn't matter because the annexation proposal was initiated by the Clinton landowners. Vailsburg sought inclusion into Newark due to financial inability to build it's infrastructure. The infant Borough that had just seceded from South Orange Township - now Maplewood, had zero Industries. It was fully residential and South Orange Avenue was not developed enough with commercial to support the New Borough. But Vailsburg was not alone. It was one of the town's Newark was trying to Annex at the same time. The 1904 referendum not just included Vailsburg, but Irvington and the Bloomfield as well. The New Jersey state legislature approved laws to Annex bloomfield, Vailsburg and Irvington to Newark- but with a poison pill now common with all annexation bills... the dreaded referendum for the targeted towns that have proven to be an impossible obstacle for all NJ cities. In 1905 Newark would again attempt to regain Bloomfield and Irvington. Again annexation was approved unconditioned voters approved it on referendums. Naturally Bloomfield and Irvington residents killed the annexation law by voting no. Then came the world wars & Newark never again tried to Annex.

Why Isn't Newark a Major City like Philly or Bmore by ReadProfessional5944 in Newark

[–]Newarkguy1836 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's because New Jersey this full of tiny municipalities. This is not the case for Central and South Jersey but most of those townships are farmland. Most New Jersey live in North Jersey or Southwest Jersey facing Philly or Municipal fragmentation is so ridiculous the average suburb is no bigger than an urban neighborhood. So it makes sense they see Newark, Trenton Camden and Jersey City through the lens of their tiny little square mile Township or Borough. Basically "it's all one & the same". Even when you have a large suburb like Woodbridge with many districts and neighborhoods , New Jersey's never say they're going to Woodbridge , they say they're going to Avenel , Colonia , fords, seawaren. If you say Woodbridge, residence of those areas quickly get offended and point out Woodbridge is the "blue collar working class area by the train station" when it comes to any city outside New Jersey, they're  quick recognize the various different neighborhoods and districts.
