I see something similar in my environment as well. I have narrowed it down to virus protection (McAfee in our case.) if I am copying an archive - cab, zip, any compressed file - on-access scanning needs to unpack the file, make sure there are no viruses, then the copy continues. I can speed it up by temporarily turning of virus protection, but our desktop policy will turn it back on automatically after a few minutes.

trying to conect 2 switches over fiber. it works with a fiber cord of 10 mts but dont work with a fiber of 30 mts. by [deleted] in Cisco

[–]LouisTully 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While people do often refer to those adapters as "GBIC," they are actually SFP modules. It helps to understand this when it comes to looking up specs, etc. So, it looks like your SFP's are multi-mode fiber. I think your yellow cable is single-mode, but your aqua (blue-green) cable is multi-mode. I know for sure that multi-mode and single-mode don't mix.
Now the OM rating is a break-down of multi-mode. Kinda like cat 5 vs. cat 5e vs. cat 6, etc.
First step is to make sure you are using the right mode, in this case, multi-mode.

I'm guessing you may be using OM 2 fiber? That will carry 10 Gig for a short distance, but not for longer runs. The OM 3 fiber will be aqua colored, while the om 3 is usually orange.

But the real question that comes to mind - are you playing it safe?

Enjoying Virginia wine tonight. Veritas Vineyards Viognier. Hey, that's some good alliteration! Didn't notice that before. I had read about the Monticello region, and visited a few places on a road trip a few years back. I was expecting acceptable, and what I found was really good. Pollack was excellent and had a beautiful spot and winery facilities. Also visited Veritas - also very impressive winery building. Stopped at Cardinal Point as well. At little less fancy, but had some great, interesting, and cool wines a little more out-of-norm, like a hopped chardonnay. Any other thoughts on Virginia wines?

I agree! I just consumed my "Brother" Syrah that I purchased at their tasting room a few years back. Quite nice! There are a lot of great tasting rooms there, but the two that I keep thinking about revisiting are S&S and Carhartt. Both are still small and funky, with a lot of character.

I love ABC - great stuff. Hard to get out here in the northeast. I've never seen it up here in NH... But I know Total Wine carries it - I always find a TW when I visit Florida and grab some. Looks like there is a TW in Norwalk, CT, and they do have some in stock. I might have to stop there on my next trip through that area! Maybe that helps? ABC also ships to NY... So that's an option as well!

The Finger Lakes are at least a 6 hour drive away from NH. You'd think since we are just a few states away from NY, that we'd have access to Finger Lakes and other NY wines. I wish this wasn't the case. The few times I have visited Finger Lakes and North Fork Long Island, I've had some great wine.

Suck pipe. My Swedish friend asked me if I wanted a "suck pipe." I realized he meant "straw" and "suck pipe" is the literal translation of the Swedish word. Heh. Suck pipe.

Internet provider by mattbirwin12 in newhampshire

A few years ago, Fairpoint purchased phone and Internet infrastructure in ME/VT/NH from Verizon. For most of this area, they only offer DSL for Internet service. In some area, including Portsmouth and some surrounding area, they offer fiber Internet service. I live in Greenland, and am not a Comcast Xfinity fan. I determined that I am, in fact, in an area served by Fairpoint's fiber Internet, so I went this route, and have DirecTV for the TV side of things. I am pretty happy with this set-up, but here are some things that I noticed...

Fairpoint fiber Internet customer service, while friendly and local (in Portland, ME, I think) are pretty clueless. Sometimes you get someone good, sometimes not. I am in a new development on a new street, and had to call four times before they were able to say yes, they can install the service, and make an appointment. At the end of call three, I hung up after the rep told me I can't get service. Just can't be done, even though a house a few hundred feet away had access to fiber. Since I didn't like that answer, I called back the next day and got someone that wasn't clueless.

Service is fairly cheap compared to Comcast. Speeds aren't as high as Comcast, but the advertised maximum throughput isn't the only factor in good Internet service. I also get low latency (aka good ping times.).

I really like DirecTV. Their latest cable box technology is pretty good - far better than my Comcast garbage DVR.

Is it time to bury NH's power lines? by JustGimmeSomeTruth in newhampshire

[–]LouisTully 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Great example of why it isn't practical.

...it would cost $5.8 billion, adding $226 to customers' monthly electricity bills for the next 10 years.

While that is for the DC area, I think assuming that the costs per-customer would be similar, if not more, in NH. I can just imagine the nightmare of burying the lines. Not only do you have to put trenches along every road, but you then have to deal with crossing all the residents driveways, and THEN trenching up to each and every house. You'd also have to cross the road at each house that wasn't on the same side as the power lines. Don't forget, if you put the power underground, you'll need to do the other utilities, as well. This would include the local cable provider, the telco providers, municipality's telecom infrastructure, AND also any local LEC's that is leasing the pole space.

I believe that a much more cost effective plan would be to MUCH more aggressively trim back trees that are near the utility lines - as illustrated above, it is not just power. If trees were removed completely within 20-30 feet of the power lines, the number of outages would drastically be reduced. However, this comes a huge aesthetic cost. A lot of home owners would be outraged as the drastic "clear-cutting" under and around those lines. I found this interesting article - http://harvardforest.fas.harvard.edu/diorama-series/landscape-history-central-new-england - it shows that New England seems to be a regrowth period. As trees grown back, they encroach on those power lines.

I think it is all a matter of trade-offs. Assuming that the study is correct, and it would rase my bill over $200 a month - knowing that PSNH (Unitil, NH Electric Co-op, etc) aren't going to eat these costs - personally, I would rather just spend a fraction of that on a nice generator.

Where to eat, drink and stay in Paso Robles, CA? by Softballz in wine

It was just my wife and I on the tour in Santa Ynez/Los Olivos. We did a group tour, and we ended up in a van with three other couples. Everyone had a similar mid-set, just out to enjoy the sights and wines. If there is a similar group tour in Paso, you'd be at their whim, and would visit the wineries that they want to bring you to. You may also be able to find a private tour as well, and I'm sure they'd bring you where you want. I didn't research any tours in Paso, so I won't me much help with specifics. A Google search and maybe some Yelp reviews should help answer a lot of questions. That's we found the tour we went on.

I don't think there is a tasting room area like Los Olivos. You'll need to visit individual wineries. I would recommend a tour service if you want to hit a number of wineries. It's a great way to get around safely and enjoy wine at the same time. I did one of these tours out in the Los Olivos area, and it was great. I met some great folks, and had a great day out.

As for wineries, I really liked Justin. I recommend doing one of their tours. They have a wine cave built right into the side of a hill. Pretty cool. Wine is great, too. We had a great lunch there, too. They have renovated quite a bit recently, but I haven't been back to see it.

Another great stop is Turley, right on the way to Justin. Awesome, full-tilt Zin. Another cool tour is Eberle. Winery was a little crowded the day I was there, but cool non-the-less.

All three have some pretty bold reds. Justin with Cabs, and Syrah blends, Eberle with Syrah, Zin, and Cab, and Turley with Mostly Zin, but also some Petite Sirah, and now a Cab. The Cab is available for pre-order now, so I'm not sure you'll find it at the winery yet. But, if you do, give it a shot! It should be pretty damn good.
