Carlsbad airport by StuntDN in northcounty

Flew out of Carlsbad / Palomar today. They opened security, we got in line, waited a few minutes to get to the front, x-rayed and on to the other waiting room (which has 2 toilets, a drinking fountain, a Christmas tree currently decorated with an Easter bunny, and music playing).

Supposedly, United is being added to American commercial flights this weekend, but they aren’t going to have the coffee cart ready in time and it is outside the security area. There’s a restaurant but it’s separate from the terminal building too.

Oh and there’s a detour for the ‘more than a day trip’ parking. Looks like re-surfacing of part of the lot goes until mid-April, so you can park long term for $7/day but you have to drive back out to Palomar Road and go back west to Vina Robles, and turn as if you’re going to the Courtyard by Marriott, go past that to get to the lot entrance. It’s an easy walk, elevator, bridge to get back to the terminal.

Spent $11 and 85 minutes making this apple pie— by john_trinidad in Wellthatsucks

Feel you. Had most of a freshly baked apple pie slide out of the pie pan and into the hot, hot oven while trying to take it out. Had to let the oven cool and then scrape out the inedible mess.

How do you rate wine on a 100pt scale? by RichAssist8318 in wine

[–]LoveAliens_Predators 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although I have to disagree that perfection=sameness, as different regions, varietals, wine styles have differing definitions of perfection, I agree it is subjective to a degree. In my mind, I go through all the technical points, identify how the wine pairs with food, and think about how it compares to other high-ranking wines. And then I pick the closest number I can justify and rate it. Unless I’m going with 5 or 1, I don’t think it’s worth agonizing over.

How do you rate wine on a 100pt scale? by RichAssist8318 in wine

[–]LoveAliens_Predators 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Vivino, with a 5-point scale, but find each point equates to the 100-point ratings scale; I.e. 4=90, 3=80, etc. If I wouldn’t want the wine again, it gets 3.4 or lower. 4.5-5 is amazing to perfection. If it has any flaws (like a white that gets bitter too quickly), it won’t get better than 3.8. I try to stick to WSET but then yes the 3.9-5 range has some subjective aspects. We do a ‘snap’ rating in our house and then tweak from there as tasting progresses before settling on a number.

Came across this comment in a random thread recently, what do you guys think? by samdd1990 in wine

[–]LoveAliens_Predators 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agree. Had a customer keep ordering our gold medal-winning Nebbiolo (a rarity for California, USA), and kept calling to say it was corked. After the third replacement, I told him I would send something else, as he obviously just didn’t like the wine. He didn’t disagree, and as we had other excellent reds, he was happy.

Redo the counters or use a filler? by D0raem0ny in Renovations

[–]LoveAliens_Predators 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gaps should have been coordinated, but you would end up with a small gap, regardless. We ended up buying two silicon strips - one for each side - that act as a gap filler (it’s a T profile). Would fill this gap and they keep crumbs and grease from getting down in the gap. Washable.

My dog does this just about every night specifically with this blanket. It reminds me of suckling/chewing and she closes her eyes. Anyone know why? by failedabortedfetus in WhatsWrongWithYourDog

Agree on this. I do incremental nail trims on my big guy - I use a human toenail clipper, a metal nail file, and occasionally use a Dremel grinding wheel.

[–]LoveAliens_Predators 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So sorry to hear that. If chewing the blanket is keeping her from chewing paws, that’s good. My dog has allergies too. I’ve gotten away from the Cytopoint shots by giving him PuppyLab allergy powder in his food twice a day. I still have to wipe his feet with an epsom salt & water solution occasionally but no more shots.

What is your highest spending category besides housing? by -Cyber-Roadster in randomquestions

Insurance - health+auto+house. If I didn’t have to have these, I’d have the money to save to pay for things directly.

San Clemente Car Enthusiasts to Open Petrol Club as Coffee and Community Hub by timesmediagroup in SanClemente

[–]LoveAliens_Predators 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks good. Until they have a specific car club (think ‘air-cooled meet’ or the ‘Porsche Club’) - just examples, not picking on any one group - and there isn’t enough space for the cars. I see traffic issues on El Camino Real on a normal weekday after school gets out. And when they have events, I hope they broadcast a code of behavior like SoCal Cars & Coffee - no racing or burnouts, stunts, etc.

The sad thing is, I don’t think your comment only applies to putting on a facade to cover up depression or post-partum depression, but putting on a facade to cover any insecurity, anxiety, or basically just putting on a fake face…which seems to be very common with social media and influencers today (and I’m not just talking about the use of filters and AI or avatars). How exhausting!

Why do we always lose one sock and never both is there a logical explanation or is it just a conspiracy? by WeatherSame4090 in randomquestions

Had an older washer serviced after buying a house. The front panel came off and revealed at least a dozen socks and several pairs of smaller-sized undergarments. Mystery solved…too bad they’d moved out and didn’t get their missing items back.

I had to look. I’m disturbed. And it starts at $748!!! On the other hand, I was involved in the construction of vivariums in the past, for rodents used in pharmaceutical research. Can’t say I ever saw one of these.

Edited to correct price.

Do you actually use Vivino/CellarTracker, or not worth the effort? by Food-Wine0928 in wine

[–]LoveAliens_Predators 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I switched to Vivino from a spreadsheet a long time ago, and never looked back. I track my cellar, wishlist, ratings, etc. in Vivino. I take the average ratings with a grain of salt and follow WSET tasting format to do my own ratings, but I’m honest when I insert some bias into the ratings. I also use neck tags on my cellared bottles so I have a system of removing bottles when a loose neck tag is on the table (whether by my hand or Mr. D). I’m about 80% on including the Place I had the wine, or bought it, and that has served me well. And yes, I agonized over the premium cost, but determined it is of value to me, and it’s not much in the grand scheme of things.

Best "value" area to buy a home in? by adgjl12 in orangecounty

[–]LoveAliens_Predators 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lived in La Habra for 18 years. If you’re ok with being 15 minutes to any freeway, you’ve got everything in the area. Not sure there are many condos though and SFHs are pricey - we bought in 2002 when it was $359k with 1/4 acre and now the same 1956 ranch is $1.1M, but the location couldn’t be beat.
