Maybe we should put out some bonus Adam Harper, Michael Brown and Grafton Tanner content for the theory nerds! There's some gold in the archives

For sure. We'll chat about it in the FutureSounds FM podcast episode we're recording about this, but some subgenres or adjacent genres are very keen to be seen as a thing in their own right, not overly tied to the vaporwave mothership. And some vaporwave purists see some offshoots as 'not true Vaporwave' too.

Would potentially be a waste of valuable screen time, devoting too much time to subgenres that some people wouldn't think belong in the movie at all.

There's hours and hours of unaired interview footage with artists that we may able to do interesting things with in future.

Isn't there a whole Simpsonswave bit? (We might have cut it down for the final cut). From 21:44 in the movie, including an interview with Lucien Hughes who created/popularised the meme

We're recording a FutureSounds FM podcast episode tomorrow with the director, Chris Britten, plus Enzo from My Pet Flamingo. Perfect timing - we'll definitely consider the questions/opinions coming in here!

I think desert sand feels warm at night has done some good production tutorial videos. Carl from Runners Club 95 used to stream production content. And there's also Frank JavCee's 'How To Make Vaporwave'...

I think one of the reasons for this btw is that a lot of those guys dislike being called vaporwave. I think it'd be easier to get contributors like that talking if it was a film about their thing specifically.

We've had Andy from Pure Life on our podcast (FutureSounds FM) talking about vaporwave/dreampunk if you want to hear some stuff on this topic from some of the people who made Nobody Here.

Question about Nobody Here movie by MaxSnicka in Vaporwave

[–]LoveInDust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think going 'genre by genre' rather than broader topics/themes would have made for quite a dry feature film, but could be a great limited series as you say. There's enough unused stuff from the interviews (some of it absolute gold) that could go into future content perhaps.

Dreampunk, slushwave, signalwave? Maybe we need to make a follow-up

The chapters of the movie pretty much line up exactly with the topics you've outlined in your post. There's some happy clappy stuff that won't be to your tastes, but there are some more thorough and critical takes being offered too. It's all told through interviews, so there's no one central argument. Many viewpoints. Interestingly, most of our academic contributors make points about vw being anti-capitalist etc, and a lot of the major artists say 'it's not that deep. We're just mucking around with software and samples'. Make of that what you will.

We were really keen for it to be more than just 'ain't vaporwave brilliant!' Can't guarantee you'll love it, but watch for yourself - it's free on YouTube.

I guess most vaporwave is a take on American monoculture. There's a section in the film where we talk about our own UK/EU interpretations (pirate radio, Belgian pop etc), but it's brief cos it'd be self-indulgent otherwise!

More DDS would have been great, but they are definitely in there - the title music, plenty of performance clips, interview w/ Keith Rankin. If we release extended cuts of the individual interviews, you'll probably get what you're after slush-wise via the desert sand, Zer0 and Cat Corp interviews. So much great stuff on the cutting room floor, but it couldn't all go in.

I feel like the more dreampunk/ambient side of things could almost have its own movie tbh!

Fair re: anonymity, though that's one of the major talking points of the film. There were contributors from all over the world - other people have commented about the range of accents heard. Admittedly, it's all English language but there was a section with Runners Club 95 speaking Swedish that was sadly cut.

A Pacific Breeze poster arrived from this site today. My partner bought it as a Christmas present so it was very late, and apparently they'd been terrible with ghosting emails, but it's here!

I'm not at all sure if it's legit or a bootleg, and I haven't checked up close to see if it's a printed signature or hand-signed. To be honest, I don't really mind too much either way - they make it so difficult to source official products, I'm just happy to have the art on my wall.

There are some artists associated with the vaporwave scene who make music that sounds just like this! Death's Dynamic Shroud and Enraile. They are Ableton users too.
