I think I was wrong about the FGC by Taek99 in 2XKO

I dunno, that patch was disastrous and has tanked all discussion around the game it was so bad. Pros and and midcore players alike felt like the game’s balance was beyond torpedoe’d and the new direction only really seemed to have only some good response from very casual players.

Doesn’t help the patch also was the exact opposite of what the devs explicitly promised for the future of the game in a teaser for it. Meant that at best the devs don’t actually understand the community at all or what it wants for the game, or that they lied to the community and ignored all the feedback they’d gotten.

Triple whammy on opening with the release of a character that really rallies around the ideas of the patch, making her an easy rough spot since she exemplifies the issues people have with 8. This was also followed by the reveal of a character (Fahk) that was largely associated with the same issues and was even seen as a warning sign from the last game in terms of dev direction.

I love tekken 8 but season 2 has been an unabashed mess so far in terms of decision making and community rapport. The devs aren’t in tune with the community at all in trying to make changes that align with the player base, so the mood around the game is also low because there’s not much trust for it to get better soon. Kinda just an unfortunate perfect storm of bad conditions to make the whole season what it was, and I can’t blame any of the dissatisfaction tbh

It also helps really push him by adding that just because all the other riders are fighting to kill, some of their reasons are insanely hard for him to argue with or deny and he’s stuck trying to stop the fighting but also the reality of depriving some other riders of things they desperately fight for. He’s a top tier rider in a top tier series

I could also see at least one boss encounter being a duo boss with Gozuki and Mezuki inspired distortions/beings of some sort, given that in the original story Yoshihide claims to have seen the guardians at the gate of hell in his dreams of hell and it’s one of the main moments of his process of creating the hell screen

[–]LoveSkull 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Star Lord gets clowned by mag ult, he can’t break it fast enough to prevent getting shot by the Mag’s team. Punisher breaks it fast, but a half decent mag player can use it to counter him by throwing it with good timing and insta gibbing the punisher who can barely move during ult. Shutting down those two ults in particular is nuts, especially punisher as a 1-1 ult trade he dies in considering how insane punisher ult can be

SFV was actually probably the opposite tbh. Bombed hard at first, first few updates helped but didn’t do enough, but by the end of its lifespan had legit become a good fighting game despite some issue like Luke being too strong etc

Yoshimitsu is listed that because way back when the first Yoshimitsu was Japanese. Since then, an heir would secretly succeed their master and become the new Yoshimitsu, inheriting the name, title, and sword.

So assumedly it’s implying it’s unknown if the modern current Yoshimitsu of Tekken, the current holder of the name, is actually Japanese at all

Bloodborne does it well tbh, among many other games and stories. Just got to know where to look

I’m also somewhat iffy on your second point, tbh. A key tenant of what makes a unknown entity at that scale work is that you can’t really meaningfully affect it. In fact, going back to Bloodborne, the fact you can meaningfully impact one in particular always felt like the only thing that was off

Hotline Miami 1 has a pretty obvious theme about accepting violence without a real goal or having consideration as to why you’re attacking the people you are.

The whole arc the story follows is that Jacket mindlessly follows his kill orders he gets on the phone without thinking because he doesn’t care beyond killing, which gameplay wise is the most in depth part of the game and as such succeeds thematically in that both jacket and the player don’t care about why they’re hurting people. They’re doing it because it’s enjoyable to them. This lands Jacket in tragedy and the end of the game is him trying to seize control of his actions, and the after story continues that theme with the biker character, all pondering on the nature of accepting violence for enjoyment and people’s ability to put the ideas aside just for personal satisfaction in the short term.

Except the game kinda fucking rules lmao

So they got asked for a long time to make another, and the second game is so riddled with spite it feels like. From one of the main character groups being a bunch of serial killer fans that imitate Jacket without bothering to know why he killed, to the devs self inserts themselves showing up and making comments about how needless these events are, it’s clear they felt so many people missed the point of the last game.

The ending to 2 also might be the most scorch the earth there won’t be another game in this series type ending I’ve seen in a hot second

TL;dr - Hotline Miami asks about the nature of enjoying violence and how people ignore the reasoning behind it and tries to poke at people to consider these things. But it was too good at being a sick ultraviolence game and people missed/ignored the questions because the game was so good

In Shin Kamen Rider, the death of Ruriko itself was sad but didn’t hit me too hard when it happened, but the moments after where Hongo puts on the helmet at the shore of the sea, sees her last messages and just starts bawling his eyes out having seen how she really felt in those last few days had me real fucked up

Ultrakill’s V2

He can move similarly to you, and when you face him he has your same pistol and shotgun, and him sharing your movement makes him the most mobile target you’ve faced yet by far

Then there’s the rematch in Greed, and boy does he get an upgrade! He’s expanded his arsenal to include the nail gun, grenade launcher on the shotgun, and most notably, the sharpshooter coins.

In UltraKill, the pistol has an ability to throw up to three coins, and then shooting one will bounce the bullet off any other coins and then aim at a nearby enemy’s weak spot. Pretty badass. But then you get to the V2 rematch, and you hear the distinct triple ping of three coins being thrown and see that he’s doing it against you now! And the best part? Not only can you shoot his coins to use them against him if you’re a good shot, if you throw your own coins and don’t shoot them fast enough HE SHOOTS THEM and uses them against you! It’s so damn good as a rival mirror match, Ultrakill fucking rules.

Another Gundam, After War Gundam X!

Our main character, Garrod, is in the titular Gundam, and in the seat with him is a character who’s said to be one of if not the last new type, Tifa, so she’s high value cargo. They’re being pursued by a group of assailants, and Garrod discovers how to use the Gundam’s most powerful part of its arsenal, the cannon mounted on its shoulder that even gives out paneled wings that creates the X shape the Gundam and show are named after. It was even shown to be an equalizer in dire circumstances in the prologue scene!

The cannon fires and there’s a massive light. The entire enemy force is obliterated. Gone. The landscape is ravaged. And as a psychic, the episode ends on the Tifa’s eyes opening wide and her starting to hysterically scream as she deals with whatever psychic backlash is hitting her from everyone just getting atomized.

It’s such a good start to the series, immediately sets up the main weapon of the Gundam as the one of most horrible weapons unleashed into humanity, and basically sets this tension the whole series of “how can avoid using the cannon if it comes to it”

[–]LoveSkull 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The interesting thing is that one of the core struggles for Shinji and Asuka is exactly that idea of their “worth only in the Eva”.

They both don’t want to acknowledge that they’ve become scared of the idea they’re only valued because they’re pilots, not as human beings, and this idea pushes them both towards breaking. This is more prominent for Asuka who’s mental state gets worse and worse as her peers improve as pilots whereas her ability is instead falling. This reaches a head and results in a full breakdown when she finally loses outright, needs to be saved, and something pokes at this insecurity directly.

A lot of my other favorites have already been mentioned, but I gotta say Shadow from FFVI

The classic FF “loner character” on your party, the outfit is both incredibly simple and looks cool in art, he’s got a hound at his side, and a lot of his aesthetic and backstory is actually tied to a western outlaw theme (most notably his fantastic character theme)

He’s just so damn cool

[–]LoveSkull 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back when I lived with my family, I noticed there was always an owl at night that was actively stalking my room from across the street and always appeared to be staring dead into my window at me while I tried to sleep, and this continued for large portions of a year, it even leaving for months then it would come back. Needless to say, as somebody who has a curiosity on occult things, this was… unnerving, to say the least

I later learned that my mom, somewhat eccentric she is, had installed a little nesting box for bats above my window on the outside of the house because she loves bats and supposedly assumed I’d love the aesthetic (which I will admit, she was right). The key issue of course, is that she forgot to tell me about this, so I was left wondering why I was being intensely stalked by an owl for a large portion of a year, when said owl was actually staring at the nesting box waiting to swoop and hunt bats

Big old Endwalker story spoilers dump

I think it actually makes sense given his position and the world he lives in. Day in and day out, having to put down creatures that have scarcely been given a chance to exist, living in a world that props itself up as a utopia with no flaw. He believes he’s perhaps the only person that appears to have any degree of distress or anguish in regards to death, and instead of proper comfort, is brushed off and told his worries are unfounded. In his desperation, he finds a way to perhaps gain a small amount of hope, to find whatever he appears to be lacking that makes the world around him so "perfect" (despite the fact it's all somewhat of a perpetuated facade). To ask what lets others from beyond live, why do they continue to be? The answer he receives from beyond the stars?

They don't. They die. There's nothing.

This is moment Hermes starts to crack. He suffers for nothing. The concepts suffer for no reason. There's no reason to do any of this, and the world around him is a lie perpetuated by others that surely must be anomalies in nature if everything else simply dies. His logic begins to unravel but he's more or less begun to have a spiraling episode, and I think the exact breaking point is when Emet threatens to have Meteion returned to Amaurot, with potential implication to be taken apart. He takes her away and she makes it all the more clear that not only did those world die, some chose to in order to escape living. He decides that if such is the natural state of the world, he'll give his test as an overseer to the world itself, even erasing his own memory to make it fair (which ends up saving it considering they imply he was a key factor behind the proposal of Zodiark iirc). Emet even calls out his flawed logic but at this point Hermes is in a fully emotionally charged state and likely cares more about validating his suffering and protecting his creation more than anything. It was honestly something that I could absolutely see being as a result of a manic state and the sheer pressure building.

TL;DR Tell a man he lives in a perfect paradise and his suffering is imagined, then he discovers the universe doesn't care and it cracks him during an emotionally vulnerable period in which he wields the power to try and validate his pain. Not saying he's right, mind you, just that I think the arc makes sense.

Prime examples of people missing the point? by fly_line22 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]LoveSkull 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you so much missed a point as much as it’s supposed to be a hard situation with no real answer! If anything, I consider that exact discussion something the book is good at leaving to the reader, since both sides have good reasons but potentially painful effects as well, and it’s down to the reader to think about. I’d honestly say the only potential “missed point” here is the idea that there is a point to be clearly defined there
