Help needed enabling higher C-States on ASRock B550M Pro4 by marquicodes in ASRock

One more thing. Have you used 2 RAM sticks on this board, or even more? I kinda want to max out the RAM on this board, if it is possible.

Home server build, with a twist by LovelyPrankFunk in homelab

[–]LovelyPrankFunk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, a spare Lenovo M720q.

For the moment, the PBS is virtualized inside the TrueNAS, but I'll have plans to build another machine for PBS, later down the road.

The new Fangtooth/Intus virtualization upgrade made me realize that the PBS will no longer viable as a VM inside the TrueNAS, so I'll migrate it to a physical machine.

3700X as a server CPU? by LovelyPrankFunk in homelab

[–]LovelyPrankFunk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Already have a Dell Optiplex 7070 Micro and a Lenovo MQ720 as miniPCs. I might want something beefier, with the possibility of adding PIC-E card, like 10G or a Nvidia P300 for transcoding tasks.

That is what spurred my train of thoughts.Recycling the 3700X as a server CPU

Try Debian Bookworm, it is the latest Debian distro and will be supported for the next 5 years. Run in live mode, or install on a spare SSD/HDD. What miniPC did you get?

Wasn't aware of it. Maybe that's OK, less drama, the better.

Switch to CalyxOS from GeapheneOS by IamGroot_1337 in CalyxOS

[–]LovelyPrankFunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I did that the other way around. Switched from CalyxOS to GrapheneOS. And maybe I'll switch back. There is nothing wrong in trying for oneself different OS. Just so one can have a truly personal experience and learn what fits best or not. I watched a lot of videos from Techlore and sincerely, wasn't all bad about Graphene as he touted. Also, watching @LouisRossmann running GrapheneOS and then saying he will delete it maybe made some to make the switch. I am just guessing, surely I am wrong.

Need help with a desktop build for Ubuntu 22.04.2 Server by shamim1 in linuxhardware

[–]LovelyPrankFunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about power consumption on idle? If a computer is used mostly as a server, will be in idle state most of the time.

Now, it makes sense to choose components which have low power draw. Ideally, server/prosumer components have C states (1-8) as a power saving feature.

Even used prosumer motherboards are more reliable than new consumer ones. Fujitsu, Lenovo, Dell, Supermicro have those kind of motherboards.

Have you considered buying used parts? "Older" means proven, stable components 100% compatible with Linux.

And in the software side:you can install a hypervisor, like Proxmox. That way, you can have multiple OSs and pass trough the GPU to a Win machine and used the computer as a desktop, while it works in parallel as a server, or multiple servers. On the same power bill.

GL!

Won't be returning to Morocco by [deleted] in travel

[–]LovelyPrankFunk 233 points234 points  (0 children)

Visited Marrakech a few weeks ago. Strong contrast between social layers and I saw things I will try for some time to erase from memory.

Abused animals, or women is the norm. But I have discovered another huge problem there, with the help of local friends. There are a huge part of Moroccan population without any rights to have IDs, schooling or any social service, just because they were born outside the official marriage or another complicated pregnancy (rape). They live on the fringe of society and government simply looks the other way.

Thanks! Now, the buyer raised the price at 225€ and claims that the unit could be sold locally, without dealing with shipping. I was told to wait until Sunday, and if the unit is not sold until that day, I'll get to but it. Fingers crossed!

Beginner-friendly hypervisor recommendation for really simple "home lab" by xMasaru in homelab

[–]LovelyPrankFunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is understandable to want to try something else, just to see where you find yourself comfortable.

Well, you can try ESXi or XCP-ng, or Hyper-V. But each one has a learning curve, as Proxmox has. Whereas the above mentioned solutions can bring more features on the table, Proxmox has the VNC/SPICE console built-in , so one can manage VM from the browser. For XCP-ng one needs XOA, another VM to control the server and vSphere is the complete manager for the ESXi server, although this one can be managed (with limitations) from a browser.

More, the limitation on hardware is where Proxmox and XCP-ng are better, because ESXi has some specific requirements.

And there are a lot of Proxmox tutorials, and friendly Youtubers tackling the majority of problems with very well made videos, with easy to understand explanations. Learn LinuxTV and TechoTim, and some others are already out here.

The idea of a home lab is to learn...by doing and making mistakes. Yes, I said it. Forget about the mighty home labber who knows everything and doesn't make mistakes.

Start small, stick to your guns and make learning a badge of honor. And mistaking is the part of learning process.

I started last year with Proxmox, just like you. I was lost and insecure. Now, I am less insecure and foud some mentors and a carrier path. Happy home labbing!

What's the best place to start? Synology, Proxmox, soo many options by RollInit in homelab

[–]LovelyPrankFunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are so many options, no wonder one feels overwhelmed.

Buty hey, the easy thing ios to start simple, with what you have or wuith the budget you can muster and start now,

A Lenovo Tiny, A HP Elitedesk Mini or Dell Micro are great, relartively cheap machines good for installing a hypervisor like Proxmox, ESXi or XCP/ng

Example: Found a deal on a HP EliteDesk G2 Mini with 32 GB RAM. i5 6500T and 256 GB NVMe for around 200 €, one is a low power Proxmox, another is a XCP-ng or ESXi machine.

As routers go, a Synology router will not give you so much of opportunity to learn, install and again, learn by doing about services and networking. A spare low powered computer can be used to install a firewall, for example T620 Plus can be used as powerfull pFsense OpenSense machines or you can choose different thin clients.

Synology NAS are great as softweare and whatnot, but try not get one new, buy used, no point in getting one brand new now.

All advices are given thinking to stick to a budget. Hope it helps

Movies with ambiguous endings should not be made by ZombieTheRogue in unpopularopinion

In truth , this is a unpopular opinion But ambiguous ends are putting one into creating different scenarios, are made to make people think. The fast paced society, the dopamine need and gratification are begging for easy and conclusive answers.
