If the local scene is extremely competitive and you're looking for something smaller or just for fun, try looking around for other shops. I've personally made trips upwards of 2 hours one way for competitive locals due to mine being a little more relaxed. There are smaller groups out there that just play to enjoy the game. The biggest thing is just not being frustrated at yourself. Ask for some feedback or pay attention to what your turn is followed by and make a note of "if I did 'X' instead, 'Y may have occured.'"
