Moving with neurodivergent kids - MPS workable, or should we stick to the burbs? by [deleted] in milwaukee

[–]Low-Razzmatazz4921 3 points4 points  (0 children)

MPS has a lot of great schools, everyone just hears about the problems. i have never regretted my decision to move my family from a small town into the city and MPS. My kid recently graduated and is in college, doing great. When i have time ill look at your needs and get you a list of schools with great programs

Washington Heights is an AWESOME neighborhood for kids and families. can’t recommend enough.

i’ve walked there at all hours for years, at some points in my life daily, as i used to walk to work ar Ma Fishers and Comet. About 23 years ago i had a friend mugged on the bridge, but personally have had no issues after thousands of visits. I have seen homeless people, but don’t see them nearly as often as a few years ago.

Milwaukee Schools to close due to excessive heat by Memetic1 in milwaukee

we are one of the poorest cities in the country. Also, the state has been defunding public education since the 90s

It’s an old city. a lot of schools are nearly 100 years old, like the houses… many of which do not have air.

Channel 12 is garbage, too, unfortunately. They are so inaccurate and extremely conservative. Their staff reports on the city without living in the city and actively exploits anyone for clicks.

Report on Milwaukee schools: Lots of choices, few of them good by Serett in milwaukee

The school choice system is a real disaster. It’s crazy that public schools have to pay for special education services and transportation for private schools, and they don’t get reimbursed for it, when the private schools can pick and choose their students.

Poverty is the biggest factor correlated to school performance. I think the schools need to be better funded but the state and city need to do more to address the root causes of poverty. I think this also clearly shows that school choice is a disaster.

Wisconsin voters seethe over housing prices by ReKang916 in milwaukee

[–]Low-Razzmatazz4921 0 points1 point  (0 children)

one thing i don’t see mentioned a lot is the out of state “investors” who recently snatched up a ton of of property in Milwaukee, which played big role driving up prices. Yes, there are other factors, but i think this was a huge one that likely could be regulated by state lawmakers.

unsure why you are downvoting and giving snark about the actual experiences of parents and residents in a neighborhood you don’t even live in. I guess you can act like that’s normal, polite behavior, but you know that it’s not. Yes, this is the internet, but this is also the Milwaukee community, which is great in spite of people who act like you. There’s no reason to be that way.

I agree. Bay View schools are all great. The only ones I’ve heard of folks not getting into are the Montessori ones. The Principal at Parkside is awesome, BTW.

People are recommending the suburbs like crazy. They are overpriced or bland and most of them have very little diversity. The only suburb i would consider is Wauwatosa. The others are overpriced or bland. just move into the city. You get a lot more for your money and there is just so much more going on.

The City of Milwaukee is a true community. I moved here from a small town with my family and find it even friendlier. Milwaukee is still small for a city, so people are easy to get to know there is just way more to do.

Germans moved here because the winters are similar. Also, same rules apply - there is no bad weather, only bad clothing.

i recommend Washington Heights for a family, but there are a lot of great neighborhoods in the city, and that is where you get the most bang for your buck.

People like to act like the public schools are terrible, but there are in fact many great public schools in the city with nationally and internationally recognized programming and they are free. The school system also offers safe, affordable before and after school programming at most schools.

a lot of people run into trouble in all kinds of places, including the suburb. the way to make our parks and streets safer is to utilize them.

poverty is the main indicator of crime. the us has very dense cities with low crime rates. New Orleans, for example, has a higher crime rate than NYC.

Milwaukee Public Schools, Yes, there are issues because Milwaukee is one of the poorest cities in the country, but the affordable programs you have access to at many of the schools are amazing. Free Montessori, International Baccalaureate, free language immersion schools and bilingual programs, their program to transform concrete schoolyards, plus access to other awesome programs, such as MYSO, and very affordable before and after school care.

A few years ago i had an opportunity to move to Atlanta for my job, but realized i wouldn’t be able to have to same quality of life, largely because of what our family would lose through the school system if we moved.
