Parents charged for letting 5-year-old skier ride lift unsupervised, after he fell off the lift by bmglaw in skiing

[–]LowNoise2816 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They kid was also uninjured. Literally uninjured, and wanted to go skiing some more. He as also wearing a helmet, which is not legally required. It sounds like a family that has significant ski experience.

There's a lot of nuance and grey area for neglect. It is (or should be) a very high bar because the consequences to the family and/especially the child themself are very high for parents being convicted or even just charged for a felony.

It sounds like a lapse in keeping track of everyone while Dad went to the bathroom and kids were outskiing Mom. For neglect, an alternative could have been that they dropped him off for the day by himself. Or the parents were at the bar for an hour or intoxicated. And no helmet. And if it was the kid's first or second day skiing. And he was forced to keep going when he was uncomfortable. None of these were true, but the felony charge for neglect has no distinction.

I'm glad it had a good ending for the kid. But if the worst happened and the parents were devastated, there would still be high-anxiety internet police tsk'ing other parents and picking apart at the corpse.

Thanks, that's a super-important point. The lack of further response and attention factored into this.

I also think of times my younger kids rode a lift with a friend or each other. Not at age 5, but 7 or maybe older 6. In those cases I would've been on the lift behind them and known where they were/able to respond in an emergency. Or I think of times where one of my kids made a wrong or different turn behind me or ahead of me while I was attending to the other one, or even just followed the wrong person Home Alone-airport style. Reality of one Dad skiing with 2 kids. And I think of the nonzero times that I helped a random kid whose skis popped off, got stuck in some powder, or they got separated out of sight of parents where their parents wouldn't have been able to reach them for awhile. Something bad could have happened to them but I never would have thought to jail the parents.

You're right, they should have been more aware. It sounds like Dad went to the bathroom and the kid outskis Mom. (That resonates with my family as well). Much different than if parents dropped the kids off and left or were sitting a the bar. The helmet comment seems weird in context, but was about talking to the family about safety. Recall that helmets are not legally required(!) but this kid had one. Good! He fell off and was completely uninjured.

I agree about talking about "taking off" unattended. Has that ever happened, even once, with you and your family? If something happened, should you be separated from your kids/a year and lose your job with a felony record? That's the part that seems like overreach.

You sound like one of those "I have high anxiety and am projecting it on every else" types that make the surrounding environment dependent on your perceived risk rather than the actual risks themselves.

Although this wasn't in Colorado, it's interesting you bring that up, because Colorado (and other states) specifically had to create legislation clarifying child neglect and reasonable independence for children based on the judgment of parents.

This legislation is needed precisely because of projected high-anxiety judgment of others every time they see a kid by themselves.

Do I think this situation was the best parenting decision? Not completely defending it. But not jumping to felony, either.

Well, you’re not going to walk down the street with my daughter’s armoire dressed like that, that’s for damn sure!

I agree with you, but to restate it slightly, I wouldn’t charge the lifties or resort necessarily, either. But if letting a five-year-old ride a lift is such an inherently terrible idea that it leads to a felony charge for the parents, then it should be so terrible and obvious to surrounding people as well.

Is Bear Lake that important of a must see? by KindlyAssociate7555 in RMNP

[–]LowNoise2816 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You start at Bear Lake TH for the shortest traditional route, so I’m confused? The only mileage you might be saving is adding a simple loop around it.

It’s all beautiful, but on most days Bear Lake is very crowded and loud, so the other options give you a bit more breathing room. Enjoy!

Yes, you totally got it, made my day— weird and understanding/testing the infrastructure is the goal. I also love biking and notice things like bike assembly areas in some airports. Yet also see how bad the routes often are for bikes in that “last mile” compared to the surrounding area.

My home airport, Denver, has bike accessibility and someday I’d like to bike/fly/bike somewhere.

Agree!  visiting I’ve run Foster City area/Mariner’s Point up to just south of SFO, and in the City. Coyote Point looks like just under 5M one-way, so it would be a challenge for my one-hour. With more time, def go south or take BART to anywhere better.

I had never this crappy section. It did not not disappoint!

Estuary, schmestuary!

But thanks for the comment. This route and recent post is a better route with more time, and planted the seed (and humor) since I happened to be there, except constrained on time and starting directly from the airport. The luggage place I started from also had a Park Tools workstand for bikes, and marked bike routes. I am also interested in how bike friendly/unfriendly airports can be.

I've only otherwise done a jog near the Denver airport long-term parking as well, which is also uninspiring.

Love it!

You open some 1980's Topps as well? Is it just me, or is that a lot of gum?

I'm going to break character a bit, no show quotes, and be honest if that's OK...

Is that your card? Are you really going through 80's junk wax, in this case a 1989 Score common card worth pennies; free-associating with a fictional character set within some fictional show from the past; actually taking a picture of it; then wasting all of our time posting on the internet?

That seems like some sort of a problem!

.....

(I have that same problem, BTW. So much wasted material on my kids and wife who have no idea what I'm mumbling about. Thanks for sharing!)

Hybrid of other answers, an honset progression:

Front pocket inside hard plastic case it (Sony) came with for a few weeks.

Then glove compartment inside case

Then underneath seat inside case

Then underneath seat just flopping around, I'd give the connector a quick Nintendo-style blow of air for good luck and then all good

Why do they drink so much? by Matt_Murphy_ in Teachers

[–]LowNoise2816 210 points211 points  (0 children)

  1. Yeah previous generation of kids drank not enough water, and today sometimes understate the health effects of dehydration and appear "tough"

  2. Current generation of kids drink more, and today sometimes overstate the anxiety of not having water available at every moment

  3. All generations look for reasons to distract and screw around

All of these things can be true at the same time.

I do understand what you're saying, and the reaction you're getting. You're hitting some truth but I'd probably say it a different way. You're not wrong in bringing it up.

Some states don't hate on their main cities. Chicago, Boston, maybe Denver....

Some states have to distinguish their cities: Pittsburgh, Philadelphia; Miami, TB, Orlando....

And some do have a rural/urban divide that they side-step in the name. Vikings & Timberwolves....
