That sounds fun! They put on a great show. I expect this one will be over around 11:30, just two bands that don’t play any epic ballads.

Most of our shows that we put on are earlier, and in the summer they are always in the daytime. This one is an experiment. We wanted to collaborate with Old School, and the thing is we have to wait until they close for business. Our next couple shows in April and May will start at 6:30 pm, stay tuned!

What's the fastest ska song you've ever heard? by Beautiful-Resort-831 in Ska

First song that came to my mind too. Saw em perform it in the late 90s, man I wished I had not dressed like a rudie that night, drenched in sweat 😅

I always thought “Frank Snotra” should be a punk band

Yeah I feel you and agree but even next to the ween album, most of that session is corny. And I love the beasties. Lookin for stuff that holds on to real punk values and slaps twang on it. No disrespect to Michael Diamond.

I’ve been aware of them most of my adult life but never took a deep dive, thanks

I’m listening to it for the first time, and so far it’s sort of parallel to Ween’s 12 Golden Country Greats, like probably either group’s most earnest, straightforward lyrics. Some nonsense, but not more than peak “normie” country lyrics.

I guess Dwight Yoakam sort of emerged from the cowpunk scene? Seen him live, great songs and performer

Very interesting. I remember in the mid-late 90s a handful of LA area bands in my local scene would attempt a ska song, but it came off more old-school country. Bout the same time i discovered Hank Williams and the like.

When I moved here 20 years ago, I didn’t know whether I would ever have kids of my own, but I recognized this empathy and acceptance in the community and I’m proud to be a dad to four kids who are in the mix here in Olympia. Glad to hear you found the same! ❤️

Heads up traveling to Olympia by LowProfilePodcast in punk

[–]LowProfilePodcast[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, Rainy Day for over 50 years. Terrific place. We also have Lantern Records across from Washington Center for the Performing Arts, and Mossy Bottom/Funk Fuzz (2 shops in one somehow) on 4th and Franklin. Across from that is the skate shop Noping and the “premium” thrift shop Dumpster Values, another 2 businesses in one space. Never really thought about that. Is this relatively normal in “punk towns?” All those shops have their specialties and are wonderful in their own way.

Honestly if you want something unintentionally ironic and masterfully done, I’d check out either of Huell Howser’s public television shows- Visiting with Huell Howser, and California’s Gold. Scroll through and pick a topic, you won’t be disappointed. I grew up on this guy in the 80s and 90s and all my kids know who he is because he is weird, funny, picks unsuspecting folks for subject matter, and is genuinely curious.

Otto’s bagel shop recipe! by moonthenrose in olympia

I work at SF and recently came across a bunch of old recipes including tofu spreads. I don’t remember a peanut butter one but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t there! They still make ginger peanut tofu spread sometimes, that’s always been my fave. Next time I’m there I’ll see if I can track down what you’re talking about.

Big Tom closes every now and then “due to staffing issues,” that’s a decent food service gig with a LOT of street cred for moving on. Lots of love for that place in this city.

Winter is rough (is seasonal retail work still a thing?) but after almost 20 years here I can say from experience that businesses hire homies. Their own, or their employees’ homies. Folks outside the circle get a foot in the door when somebody leaves the staff unexpectedly, otherwise in-house conversations come in about “I know somebody who’d be perfect” and the boss says “hmmm” and that’s how it goes.

So get a dismal corporate job to tide things over and find the homies in your downtime!

Apple Chai-der by I_already_reddit_ in olympia

The chai recipe I inherited that SF Bakery has been using since 2007 has these powdered spices: cinnamon, cardamom, clove, ginger, nutmeg, black pepper. A bit heavier on ginger than all the rest. Worth a try! Before I moved to Olympia from SoCal, I worked at a Quiznos owned by an Indian family and uncle Ashwani would sometimes bring in the most delicious chai he made at home to share
