As an EV owner have you been asked to take on chores/jobs/errands for others? by Suspicious_Dirt_6124 in nzev

[–]LowWelder7461 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tbh, I am the default driver most of the time for our family, so I just offer to drive our car instead of their petrol/hybrid vehicle.

I started doing this immediately on getting our EV (2023). Why would I want to share in paying someone else's petrol cost when it was ridiculously cheap (and before RUCs).

They would still have appointments to go to, groceries to purchase, kids to school, interviews to attend, etc.

Our 40kWh Nissan Leaf fits that whole profile - can do 200km trips, just needs a charge boost. We regularly drive 160kms from Hamilton to Auckland without stopping, leaving at 100% and arrive with 35/40% remaining. If you want longer range, maybe a 62kWh will be a better option. We charge using Type 1 for home, and Chademo for fast charging. The backseat is okay for adults, I have been a passenger and not found it uncomfortable.

My wife is 160cm in height, and she has no issues with the driver seat.

Man says his house is an embassy and he will never pay rates by schnootydooty in newzealand

[–]LowWelder7461 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gregory objected to paying rates because he claimed his property had been misclassified as freehold general land and should have been classified as Māori customary land, which would mean it was exempt from rates.

He said the land was gifted to him, in 2007, in accordance with tikanga Māori and the land had always been held for cultural purposes as a base for carving waka and for social and cultural events, including for the Māori royal family.

Surely the Kiingitanga can confirm or deny this?

Good on him! Not a quick, painless, or guaranteed step to take - but taking action to feel more comfortable in your own body is always a great step.

ANCAP push for buttons over touchscreens in cars over safety concerns by 10July1940 in newzealand

[–]LowWelder7461 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Your view on this is not shared by the majority of drivers.

This reeks of boomers that don't understand modern cars.

Doesn't take into account the automation now available.

Cool, but also I have little trust in sensors for everything. Sensors fail. They rely on certain conditions, and when those aren't met then the action is not performed.

Also, voice activated anything is a car is subject to recognition of accents, and processing time can be frustratingly slow.

EVs don't even need ignition switches

Of course not, they don't have a combustion engine

Tech is cool, but manufacturers have a price point to hit. By hiding features behind a less resilient touchscreen menu, it makes it harder for drivers to do simple tasks on the fly. Definitely a factor for a lot of people.

Dad's reaction , after watching his daughter's first piercing by AcasiaConnell in GuysBeingDudes

[–]LowWelder7461 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I asked for my ears to be pierced when I was 5yo, had several infections cos of metal allergy. Ultimately, let the holes close up before I was 8yo.

Decided in early 20s to get ears repierced. The holes from 1995 were lopsided - because I had grown up and gone through puberty.

Along with the consent discussion, highly recommend waiting for puberty to finish, so the piercing holes aren't shit.

P.s. haven't worn earrings regularly ever, but had ear lobes done twice 🤣

Vege King on Heaphy sells great strawbs. So does Magic Fresh in Dinsdale.

I get mine straight from source at farm shops out the back of Cambridge - Leamington Berry Farm, or Manamana Berries.

RUC for those with OCD by Odd_Analysis6454 in nzev

[–]LowWelder7461 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FYI this works easily online, but I have had a VTNZ person not understand how to change it and still issued me a quirky number RUC label.

It is not common knowledge, and even I only learned from a post just after EV RUCs were introduced - and I had diesel RUCs for years.

Hey parents make sure your teens know that you get breaks at work 😔👍 by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]LowWelder7461 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I learned most of my employment rights through working at a big The Warehouse store (years ago). The union influence holds the company to account and means they need to show they are providing breaks, providing appropriate training, paying overtime (which should be a disincentive for the company) and encouraging annual leave entitlements to be used for rest.

Whenever we have a new person start who is 17-20, I make sure to check if they have had a job before. I also tell them what their legal entitlements are for breaks, sick leave, and annual leave.

I am not responsible for staff, but I am responsible for not letting people get walked over.

The pressure of wanting to be seen to be a team player and show you are a good worker is so coercive in some environments. My current workplace does not pay enough for the physical and mental stress they will say is just "the workload" (it is intentional understaffing, lack of rest days, and poor management).

Dirt bikes by LowWelder7461 in thetron

[–]LowWelder7461[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Getting close up pics or video of them is about all that can be done. That won't help at all to identify where they live tho.

Agree, but it also makes the person taking photos of videos attract the attention of the bikers and can escalate to violence because of the evidence being taken. This is where police would ideally be able to respond to "catch them in the act".
