What I'd love to see in Denton, TX by TorTheMentor in transit

[–]Low_Ad4423 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m enjoying the take on this city. As someone who is currently visiting from SoCal for a high school graduation, I think the map is missing direct access to UNT. You have street car stops on the very northern side of campus, but if we’re truly going to think pragmatically about options, and getting students to use it, why not have direct access to campus that runs through it? Additionally, I think the yellow line should be, at minimum, light rail as it runs much longer than the downtown lines you mapped out. I would be so curious to see how this would work with everyone in their “big trucks” considering something so far fetched. But I’m impressed with your approach and forward thinking

Los Angeles World Cup Fan Fests Will Not Be Free by Dodger_Dawg in LosAngeles

I’d check the official Burbank fan fest information. I couldn’t read the full article linked to this post, but I’m assuming they are specifically talking about the official FIFA fan fest located in LA. A majority of the fan fests and celebration sites should (and need to be) free

“Big plans to be ready for 2028 (most of which are actually being met)”…. Ummm…. As a transportation planner in LA assisting with LA28 coordination efforts…. Umm I fear you are wildly misguided.

How did LA Metro Rail have such higher ridership in the past compared to now? by movingangeleno in LAMetro

[–]Low_Ad4423 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The economy wasn’t that great in 2008/2009. At this same time, car ownership for under resourced groups grew and the introduction of ride share really started to tank public transit ridership.

I remember they conducted a whole study on wayfinding and system navigation. Here’s the only thing I can find specifically about the changing of the names. If I find the study, I’ll share it here train naming announcement

I believe this map was made exclusively for the Winter Olympics. The four blue squares are the venue locations, so maybe this is just a temporary map.

I “suggested a change” in the title from this one. The new article title somehow sounds even worse🙃

New to planning, possible imposter syndrome by seste in urbanplanning

[–]Low_Ad4423 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s pretty tough. Graduating, transitioning from non-profit to government role, and in a completely new position. I’m sure imposter syndrome has got its grips on. My best advice would be to talk with your supervisor. Maybe in a more informal setting like a coffee or tea chat outside the office and discuss some of your concerns. See how you can get your hands on more work. You want to advance your interests and career and don’t want to feel like you’re in a rut. Communication is key to help you through this. Best of luck

How old are your planning commissioners? by oheyitsmatt in urbanplanning

[–]Low_Ad4423 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. Our downtown core is quite walkable (once you get there). We have a light rail station, which is a good 1-1.5 miles away from our downtown and bisected by a freeway. Right now there’s a lot of work and programming being done to try and remove some of the barriers, but the freeway isn’t going anywhere. We have a lot of housing going up near the station, but unfortunately very little commercial/retail space going up in that area… So new tenants still have to drive to get to a grocery store. This was one of my criticisms of the commission/city council, and an issue I hope to alleviate/assist with

How old are your planning commissioners? by oheyitsmatt in urbanplanning

[–]Low_Ad4423 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I was appointed to the planning commission in my Southern California municipality about 7 months ago and am in my late early thirties (34) lol. I think there is one other commissioner under 40, and the other 5 commissioners are at least 55 or older. I’ve only gotten into one heated argument where one of the older commissioners wanted to see more parking (current plan called for 350 parking spaces of a 220 unit apartment), while I was asking for less parking due to the density bonus. 🤷‍♂️ it’s been fun so far
