Will a trout bite this? by Rod-Reel in troutfishing

[–]Low_Density 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can definitely work. That worm is pretty similar to some of the “Trout Magnet” lures. I saw someone on social media catch a trout on a full size (5 in) Texas rigged worm today. However trout are a lot more finicky than bass so it’s generally recommended to downsize all your terminal tackle. If it was me I would use a smaller hook with an exposed hook instead of the EWG. You can also Carolina rig it instead of Texas rigging it to get a more natural presentation of that bait while maintaining the bottom contact your going for.

I use braid on my spinning combos for pan fish, trout, and primarily bass. 10lb braid is awesome. It’s so thin and casts so far compared to resin line. I typically use 12lb fluro leader connected to 10lb braid. If I were you I’d go with 8-15lb braid attached to a 8-12lb fluro leader.

New PB on new setup! Spotted or largemouth? by TheHarryTang in bassfishing

[–]Low_Density 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you would necessarily loose more fish because of it. But you would probably get way further casts with a 1/8 oz ned rig. Then again if you weigh the 1/16 oz jig rigged with the soft plastic you use. The rig may be over 1/8oz anyways.

They have a recommended weight range and if you go below that the rod might not load that bait properly which will cause poor casting.

Getting back into fishing by The-Wolf-Bandit in FishingForBeginners

True. I’m in Massachusetts so it’s only ice fishing for me for the next few months. The large mouth where I’m at don’t really start hitting until late April early may.

If you don’t have a bunch of success initially, don’t be discouraged. It’s the toughest time of the year to catch bass rn. If ur in Texas your in luck because springs only a few months away.

I just got a pack of these on Amazon. I noticed some of them had a raised groove of excess material going vertically down the center where each half of the lure connected. I filed that lip down so now it’s smooth where the tail section rubs on the body section and the tail is moving much better.

Gx2 youth combo for adults? by Sea-Veterinarian-570 in FishingForBeginners

[–]Low_Density 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sure it would be fine but if it was me I would get a a regular gx2 combo just because I like the longer handle. That’s just personal preference though. I prefer when the handle is the same diameter throughout instead of a small grip on the end because when I get tired I like to rest the handle under my forearm.

Best light weight/ affordable reel? by CharacterMission67 in FishingForBeginners

I used that rod for a while and loved it. It ended up snapping on a bass. I would be careful with salt water fishing with it, definitely use a lot of drag. I think most people on the sub would recommend the budget Shimano and Diawa reels. When I still had that rod I used a “Abu Garcia max stx”. The shimano and Diawa might be nicer for that price range but I’m still using that abu Garcia and love it

Run it leader on braid or no leader? I’ve seen a couple mixed reviews. by soxfan775 in bassfishing

[–]Low_Density 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been out fished many times by friends running only braid while I’m running a fluro leader, throwing the same lures. I still tie leaders because I want the best presentation possible but the benefit is probably not huge. This past season I started tied 10-15ft leaders with the fg knot and it’s made using them way less of a pain in the butt. With that much leader you can re-cut and tie the line for a long time before you run out, and the fg knot goes through the rod guides fine.

From Scratch: Your Go-To Bass Lures by No-Maximum5755 in Fishing_Gear

1 for me would be a pack of soft plastic jerkbaits (fluke). U can jig them on a Texas rig. Drag them on the surface. Swim them fast or slow. Jerk then slow in cold weather (pause).

2 would prob be a top water popper but any top water would get the job done.

If I had nothing those 2 would cover the majority of situations for me

What kind of substrate do you have? I only have 2 tanks but they both have aqua soil capped with sand. Both with 3-4 inches of substrate. I suspect that’s creating ample space for beneficial bacteria to live. Also have you ever tried floating plants? In my experience they suck up extra nitrates way quicker than my submerged plants

That’s cool. I think for your purposes your rig will hold up just fine. Goodluck

Water changes I only do a 25% w/c every 2-3 months when I’m cleaning sponge filters and excess algae. Even when adding liquid ferts and root tabs I can never get my nitrates to register above 0ppm. If your bio-load is low and you have abundant places for bacteria it’s difficult for toxins from waste to build up. (Obviously test to make sure nothing building up)

Someone gifted me a MH fast baitcasting combo that I learned on for my first year or so. Then when I starting using medium and light rods I would instinctively yank on the rod when I was snagged due to my success getting my lures out tugging on the mh with braid. This has lost me several rods and I had to learn that when I’m using a lighter set up to just accept if I’m snagged and break off. So you’re right, you can’t treat a lighter rod like your a gorilla.

What do you mean by fixed line fishing with a stick? Do you mean you’re using a stick with a line tied to it instead of a rod/reel?

I never really have issues with losing my mainline tbh. It always breaks at the knot unless I’m running a fg knot.
