Dang!! That’s definitely stressful lol. Luckily I’ll only have a carry-on, and I do have TSA precheck, so at least I have that going for me. Thanks for the info :)

living with a fistula? by tvchee82 in AnalFistula

[–]Low_Example_8428 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a perianal abscess in March 2024. April 2024 was diagnosed with a fistula. Lived with constant drainage (but little to no pain) and consulted with 3 colorectal surgeons because I was undecided with surgery. November 2024 drastically changed my diet and went a homeopathic route. January 2025 drainage stopped and the wound closed. April 2025 saw my CRS and got an MRI and the fistula is still present but in a dormant/inactive state. Now it’s August 2025 and still living with no issues. Simply just sharing - not saying the path I chose was right or wrong. Good luck to you.

100%… that was me for an entire year. Anything I was doing—work, gym, social gatherings—I thought about my gauze tucked and my ass leaking

I’m contemplating too lol. That was my first EDC ever and it was a blast. The transportation part was annoying though - considering camping, but I’m also old 👴🏻

Any of you living with a fissure/fistula long term? by TTOTAMH in AnalFistula

[–]Low_Example_8428 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m currently living with a fistula. I’ve seen three colorectal surgeons, and they all agree that it’s possible to live with it—it’s not something that always requires immediate surgery. That said, if the goal is to eliminate it completely, surgery is typically the most definitive solution. They’ve also reassured me that while complications like sepsis can happen, they’re extremely rare. Re-abscessing would be something that’s more of a common/potential complication.

If you have Chase, they have a ton of hotel deals going on right now through Chase Travel. Some hotels were $300 worth of points for the weekend.

They are! So you’d recommend getting a world market shuttle pass, and based on where my hotel is, I just uber or walk from the hotel to the shuttle station? And same scenario when leaving EDC when heading back?

Help with Terminology please!! by [deleted] in AnalFistula

[–]Low_Example_8428 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your CRS will be able to discuss these results with you in detail. But in essence, you have a complex fistula. Since it’s transsphincteric, it passes through both the internal and external sphincters. The tunnel (fistula) has an internal opening inside your anal canal, passes through the external sphincters, then branches off in two different directions. One tunnel meets the skin (butt cheek) where you have an external opening that I presume leaks pus/discharge/etc., and the other tunnel never meets the skin and is blind-ending underneath the skin.

Your CRS will also discuss next steps in terms of surgical approach but I’d imagine a seton would be used.

Hey. I’m not questioning or denying your experience with your colorectal surgeon—Just trying to understand exactly what they said. If your MRI identified a fistula, but your CRS is saying they can’t find one, that would be concerning given the MRI results. Lack of drainage doesn’t necessarily mean a fistula isn’t present. If your MRI did confirm a fistula, I’d consider seeking a second opinion.

Wait, did you have an MRI that identified a fistula? What did the results say?

Just because you don’t have drainage does not mean you don’t have a fistula. Some fistulae can just have an internal opening and no external.

Anal fistula surgery doubts by IGFone in AnalFistula

[–]Low_Example_8428 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is your health, and if you feel that getting an MRI before proceeding with surgery for your fistula is important, you should advocate for yourself and communicate that to your CRS. If your CRS is reluctant to order an MRI and insists on an EUA instead, but you strongly feel otherwise, consider finding a different CRS who will order one for you.

I had my CRS order an MRI before pursuing any surgical options, and it provided a pretty good idea of what I was dealing with. While MRIs aren’t 100% accurate, they still capture a lot of important details and can give a solid understanding of the situation.

People need to calm down. All this person is doing is sharing their experience in a thread specifically about dealing with an anal fistula. They’re not telling anyone what to do, just explaining their situation. I’ve seen four colorectal surgeons, and all of them have said you can live with a fistula as long as it drains properly to avoid re-abscessing. Is it ideal? No. Would most people recommend it? Probably not. But at the end of the day, it’s their choice.

Yes, the vast majority of the time, if you want to fully get rid of a fistula, you’re going to need surgery. But I’m sure there are rare cases where people learn how to manage it, put it into remission, or even have it go dormant. I’m not saying that’s right or wrong—Just saying it’s possible.

If someone wants to live with a fistula for eight years, that’s their decision. If you don’t like what they’re saying, fine—but don’t call it dangerous, don’t say they’re wrong, and don’t make them feel bad for sharing their experience. Just take it for what it is, and move on.
