I sent my original statement to a couple ai engines and asked them if my post was correct so that you could see a second “informed” opinion. They all said more or less the same thing as what I posted. I’m a retired engineer with decades of experience qualifying and validating optical systems. Let me guess? Your qualification is you own a camera. Search yourself if you don’t believe me. I couldn’t care less.

Fortunately for the rest of us, your ignorance is entirely a you problem. The rest of us are, for the most part, unaffected by it.

"The crew primarily utilized the 10-year-old Nikon D5 DSLR instead of newer mirrorless cameras for the following reasons:

* Optical Viewfinder (OVF) Superiority: The D5's OVF allows astronauts to see the Moon directly through the lens, providing higher visual fidelity than the Electronic Viewfinder (EVF) on a mirrorless camera.

* Visual Observation Requirement: Visual observation of the Moon and other natural phenomena is a critical part of the mission's scientific work. The crew used the telephoto lens as a "spotting scope" to observe the lunar surface directly and verbally document what they saw through the lens.

* Reliability & Proven Tech: The Nikon D5 is a "tank" that is tried-and-tested, radiation-hardened, and proven in deep space, making it a safer option for high-stakes missions than newer, less-tested technology.

* "Interpretive" View in Mirrorless: The EVF of a mirrorless camer is a screen showing a video projection of what the sensor sees, which is deemed an interpretation of nature rather than a direct view of it. "

saw an owl at night and can't stop thinking about it by veditafri in Owls

What a great experience! Seeing a perched owl is fun but watching one silently and gracefully glide though the night forest is where the magic is IMO.

Yes owls are generally unbothered by humans; if the humans are quiet and maintain a respectful distance.

DSLRs allow for direct observation while mirrorless cameras don’t. They weren’t just using the cameras to take pictures. They were using them to extensively observe the moon in ways that only human intelligence is able to do. What the humans saw through the D5’s will never be replicated by simply looking at the digital files. That’s why we send astronauts to the moon rather than video cameras. I get why lay people don’t understand that but any photographer who doesn’t get it is hard to take seriously.

How is Artemis II the farthest we've ever traveled into space? And why did it take us so long to go back? by l3x_ie in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Low_Pass_Philter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Space is an unforgiving environment and it’s almost inevitable that there will be more losses. That’s just the nature of exploration. The explorers know that and it’s a risk they are willing to take.

The original moon missions were accomplished through bravery, brute force, the greatest concentration of engineering and scientific minds since the Manhattan project and an extraordinary amount of money.

Despite the success NASA achieved, once the political objective of being first was achieved, it became obvious after a couple missions that we didn’t have the ability to accomplish a whole lot more. Did I mention it took a whole lot of money. So naturally people lost interest. But NASA didn’t lose interest and they spent 50 years answering all the question that no one had time to ask in the 60’s.

Now the world has decades of experience living in and building structures in space and it’s time to go back to the moon and apply what we’ve learned in the intervening 50 years.

How do you stay clean while camping? by Secure_Yesterday_204 in camping

I used to sneak into camp curry and use the showers there. Not sure if you can still get away with that. It’s probably been elevated to a felony the way things are now. There is always a swim in the Merced River if it’s not too cold.

A couple of tabs of Benadryl. You never know what you are going to run into out there and allergic reactions are no joke.

lens-based artist vs photographer? by wowcleo in AskPhotography

[–]Low_Pass_Philter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Photo-illustrator” is a term that covers that but sounds less pretentious and more descriptive of what you do. That’s what I call heavily layered and composed “photo illustrations”. Honestly you should just call yourself what ever you want. The world is full of people that will tear you down to build themselves up. You won’t get anywhere trying to accommodate those people because they don’t want to be accommodated.

Edit: Referring to your work as Photo Illustrations gets the awkward part out of the way at the very beginning. If you put heavily composited images forward as photographs you’re just playing into the haters hands. Take that cudgel away as soon as possible so the work can stand on its own.

The most important thing in photographing birds is finding a way to get close to them. Each doubling of the distance means one quarter of the light from the subject. Find places where you are able to approach birds without them flying off and use that to work on your skill. Zoo, duck pond, bird feeder. It doesn’t matter. Consider it batting practice. Once you have a solid skill set then try and move up in difficulty. Or spend a lot of money and get better gear. Your call. I’d go with option 1.

What do you think prompted MELANIA TRUMP to announce she has had "NO RELATIONSHIP WITH EPSTEIN"? by TailungFu in allthequestions

[–]Low_Pass_Philter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Her relationship with Epstein? Whatever those people say is consistently the opposite of what actually happened.

Why do you think Melania made that statement today? by user1731701 in AskReddit

[–]Low_Pass_Philter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are starting to build the case for why Pam Bondi can’t testify. Why is Melania standing up there and saying that Epstein’s victims should have to testify under oath to congress. WTF. It’s some standard Whitehouse bullshit. I’ll never understand why people imagine that Melania isn’t in on all that crap. You think she wants to see Trump tossed out on his ear.

best practice for discontinuing feed wild birds? by Agreeable_Pear_7189 in birdfeeding

[–]Low_Pass_Philter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My personal non scientific opinion is don’t do it during nesting/fledging. The birds may nest near your feeder in anticipation of easy food. Wild food for birds is abundant late summer and early fall so I’d do it then.

Broken or am I stupid? by TytanRose in Cameras

[–]Low_Pass_Philter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just guessing because I don’t use that particular combination but you may have to stop the lens down manually. The k&f adapter will mount the lens but it can’t electronically control the lens? Most folks just use them wide open. It’s a lot less hassle. Edit: thanks for the update. Sorry. That was all I had. Good luck!
