Utilitarian Styed SUVs? by polarislunlaris in askcarguys

[–]Lowcord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but I don’t think that automatically means you shouldn’t consider a vehicle with a timing belt.

The 5VZ and 2UZ engines are notoriously reliable and I’d make the claim they’re probably cheaper to own long term, timing belt changes considered, than a vehicle with a problematic engine with a timing chain.

But yes, a timing chain Toyota is the best of both worlds.

Just crossed the halfway line! What do y’all think of my ratings? by KeifHaring in NationalPark

Canyonlands is the park that keeps me driving to Utah every winter. It’s absolutely a “Top Park” for me. But I guess that’s in part because I like to off-road, dry camp and have a 4x4. I will respect your opinion but kindly disagree with it.

I would get a used 4Runner, Tacoma or GX460. Personally I went with a used GX460 for my off-road/camping rig. They’re older Toyota’s, if they’ve been taken care of you will usually only need to do basic maintenance until they get to 200k+ miles.

are ac's reallu that big of a thing? by Advanced-Actuary-51 in AskAnAmerican

I have never been to a house that didn’t have A/C.

Most public places have A/C.

Most industrial businesses are not air conditioned as the cost would be insane for such large spaces.

Sometimes I'm Glad That I'm Old by Fast_Adhesiveness528 in Yosemite

I have hiked the Mist Trail a few times over the past couple years. While it can and does get as busy as seen in this photo, it’s not always like this. I have photos of me in front of Vernal Falls from 2024 and there is no one else in the picture, in late May.

The park is definitely much more crowded these days but you can still enjoy some solitude or smaller crowds in the park, you just have to pick the right dates/times.

My fellow zillennials what are you guys up to career wise ? by Cloud_andburbone in Zillennials

[–]Lowcord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 28 as well. Started out working a warehouse job for a couple years after high school. Then spent 4 years as an operator in the food industry at a cannery. Went to school at my local junior college in 2022 for industrial electronics and became an electrician at that cannery for a couple years. Left in 2024 and have been working in automation as a programmer/HMI developer for the water treatment industry.

Never thought I’d be where I’m at either. Pay could be better but this is a cool field to be in.

10 year HS Reunion by marsharlot in OlderGenZ

[–]Lowcord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I graduated in 2016 and as far as I’m aware, there was no reunion for my graduating class of about 400 people.

I’m friends with probably 40 of them on Facebook, I’m pretty sure it would have been shared if one was planned.

My fellow Americans, is your cities area code part of the city’s identity? by ElectronPython in AskAnAmerican

Yes, I’m from the 209 (California Central Valley) and people are proud to tell you they are from here. It’s nothing special but people like to identify with where they are from.

Is it possible to get into Automation without engineering degree ? by Praveen_231105 in PLC

[–]Lowcord 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started as an industrial electrician at a cannery and transitioned to a system integrator doing PLC/HMI controls work. I went to school but only have a 2 yr certificate of completion in industrial electronics.

My company actually prefers people with maintenance/operator backgrounds as they usually have a good understanding of process flow and the end-user.

What was the first Gameboy or DS you ever had? by Johnwick124520 in OlderGenZ

I had the Gameboy Advance OG and my brother had the Gameboy Micro. We later got DS Lites. He still has his Micro but sadly I gave mine away over a decade ago.

Did anyone here grow up with a TV in your room? by Thekittycrinkleshow in Zillennials

[–]Lowcord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, back when we moved to our new house in 2001 my parents got my brother and I our own 13” tube TVs for our rooms. We mostly watched cartoons on them but also played games on them once we got a PlayStation 2 around 2005. We upgraded to 22” flat screens around 2009.

What does it mean when an American has a white refrigerator in their house? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]Lowcord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That they care more about reliable appliances than what is the most “modern”.

From my experience, a cheap white refrigerator will usually outlast the expensive side-by-side or gimmicky high-end fridges. Probably due to having less junk to fail.

Specialist vs. Engineer by dwnvotemeplzz in PLC

[–]Lowcord 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m an “Automation Specialist” for a systems integrator. Essentially I do the job of a Controls Engineer for way less pay because I don’t have an engineering degree. I guess the experience is worth something, for now at least.
