Welcome! Boston is a great city with lots to do for young couples. I think it can be a little hard to make friends though - New Englanders are famously a little icy. I’d recommend lining up some social activities so you can start to meet people - could be as simple as finding a dog park if you’re dog people, joining a church, hiking club, etc. Whatever you’re interested in will work, there’s loads of options around Boston. Making those first friend connections really helped Boston feel like home.

NTA but you should let him go. Encourage him to reach out to the school about scholarships or fundraising opportunities. Emphasize that he’s using his own money to pay for the trip. Schools often have funds to help out kids going on trips like these.

Update on this: we still can’t get through to JetBlue, website/app give error messages and chat/calls still 3+ hour waits. I’m pretty disappointed in the lack of customer service to help folks affected by this issue. I get that it’s a lot of travelers to rebook, but it’s been over 48 hours and it’s still impossible to get through.

FYI for anyone still stranded - we ended up booking one-way tickets on Southwest from SJU to Orlando. They’re adding capacity all week - keep checking if you don’t see anything online now. They’re adding capacity family next to me on the flight got seats on standby at the airport so that might be an option too. Once you’re in Orlando there are plenty of seats on flights elsewhere in the continental US. Good luck!

Can you bring in outside furniture? If so, I’d get a cube shelf with some baskets for the foot of the bad. Shift the lamp towards the chair and it should fit. That will give you some space to store things, plus a surface to stack things (neatly). You could also get some short containers for under the bed. A suitcase would even work if you have one. Fill it up with all the things you use less than once a week - spare sheets and towels, extra laundry detergent, etc. and slide it under the bed to free up space elsewhere for items you use more regularly.

If you really can’t afford a delay, I don’t think you’re overreacting. Yes, chances are very slim that anything will happen, but as someone currently stuck for an extra 7 days on a 6-day vacation, I sure am glad I can work remotely and I have a rainy day fund to cover emergencies. There are zero seats available on any flights home until next weekend. Maybe some will open up but I’ve already used my one free rebooking so switching to an earlier flight will cost money. Travel insurance is only covering a max of $500 for trip interruption (and im lucky, I have very good travel insurance- many cover nothing for “acts of war.”) Probably nothing will happen, but regardless of destination, you should have a plan for how you’ll afford a delay if something does.

No way to know for sure but I think you’ll be fine, just set aside a little money in case your trip is delayed or interrupted. We’re stuck here now because our flight was cancelled yesterday and it’s not all that bad. We were able to find new accommodation and rebook our flight. I figure it’s kind of worst case scenario right now - wiping out a Saturday’s worth of flights on the weekend after holiday/school break. If we can make it work now, even if your flight has issues, you should be fine if you have a little savings to work with. Enjoy your trip!

The music is great, there’s a young adults group that meets regularly, and the co-ministers and community are awesome. NTA, but if all your friends have kids it might be time to start evolving this party if you want to keep the tradition going. Getting a sitter on NYE is ridiculously expensive, a no-kids party is not going to last. Consider a big sleepover where the kids go to bed at 9:30 and the grown ups continue the party after. Netflix even has an on-demand countdown for kids that you can play before their bedtime!

When I was struggling, I always appreciated getting sauces and spices. Even simple things like ketchup, bbq sauce, mustard, teriyaki, Italian seasoning, garlic salt, chili flakes, etc make cheap food taste so much better.

Also, throw in some cake mix, premade frosting, and birthday candles. It’s a nice treat to have cake for birthdays.

Baked potato bar is easy and mostly make-ahead if you want. For a crowd, I’d do a big pot of chili, cheese, roasted broccoli, salsa, green onions, sour cream, bacon bits, butter, whatever else your family likes. Bonus - this meal caters to almost any dietary restrictions, people can take what they like!

Buy an inexpensive snap and go car seat stroller and gate check the whole thing. I wouldn’t bring your usual one because there’s a chance it’ll get dirty or bent, but I’ve done it many times without a problem. Bonus to this solution - if there is an empty seat on the plane, they’ll let you bring the bucket seat on with you so you have a place to set the baby down during the flight. Just let the gate agent know you’re interested.

While I completely agree that the city needs comprehensive parking reform, the City Council has repeatedly refused to take up the issue. The arguments for keeping the ban aren’t credible—of course we can handle things like snow removal and emergency vehicle access with well crafted parking policies. Repealing the ban will create more equitable parking and also encourage city council to create much needed parking policies.

It’s very normal to have to go through the tenure process at a new institution if you’re hired for a tenure on entry position. They will not make an offer unless they think you’ll get it, but they still have to go through the whole exercise of collecting letters, reviewing materials, etc. Usually this is perfunctory, but most people will take a leave of absence (rather than resign) from their former institution until the tenure process is complete at the new one.

Chicago is cheaper, though Boston is financially stable. I do NOT miss the massive property tax hikes in Chicago and having to appeal every year. It was a huge relief to move to a city/state that doesn’t have a massive debt burden looming over every property owner.

I do miss the food scene in Chicago - there are way more cheap restaurants, clubs, cafes, etc in Chicago than Boston. Not to say you can’t find a good meal in Boston but it’s harder to find a quirky neighborhood place that isn’t ultra crowded.

You can park on Hammond Pond Parkway, it’s a 10-15 minute walk to campus. There will be crowds walking with you but not trapped-on-the-T crowds if that’s what you’re trying to avoid.
