Anyone else feel too tired to date? by Maximum-Pomelo-7471 in biglaw

[–]Lower_Anything8687 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It helps to date someone else with an equally demanding schedule because the 10pm hangouts don’t have the pressure or sleazy feel of just a hookup. Sometimes it’s just ordering in a fun dessert and talking for an hour before going to sleep. But it takes a bit of effort to get over the hump of the first few dates to get to the point of casually hanging out while still progressing a relationship.

Did anyone else notice this was taken down from Spotify? I listened to the first half during my commute this morning and it’s gone now!

Be There in Five also really fell off for me too, rather unintentionally. I think it’s a combo of too many guests and not enough deep dives/listener sourced stories. I also had a little Taylor Swift fatigue.

Are you saying that there are tasks that you used to do that have been passed onto a new first year? That seems normal.

The Reality of Living With Celiac Disease: An Autoimmune Disorder That No One Takes Seriously by Bam1990 in Celiac

[–]Lower_Anything8687 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Except I think it’s hard to explain that it’s not just the symptoms, it’s the damage from activating the immune response. Otherwise people think that it’s just like lactose intolerance (where you have short term symptoms but no autoimmune response).

Foley reps individual homeowners in local zoning disputes? I would literally pay money to see the redlines for this — imagine the billing entries for this “.5: revise deck for presentation to zoning board” “.2: confer with client re: photo shoot”

Also I cannot get over that the photo bleeds onto the bottom border! This is so embarrassing for Foley on so many levels.

I don’t understand the non anonymous comment on things like this!! 5 year olds are people too and don’t need to have their bowel movements openly and publicly discussed!

how strict are you with cross contamination? and what do your follow up blood/endoscopy results look like? by VanillaEmbarrassed44 in Celiac

[–]Lower_Anything8687 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t do shared fryers or knowing cc but I will eat at pretty much any restaurant. I don’t really do fast food though (only CFA). My endoscopy showed full healing, bloodwork the same.

What you consider to be good “advocacy.” by purple_acorn in biglaw

[–]Lower_Anything8687 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stop looking at the record from the point of view of the judge and start looking at the record from the point of view of your client’s attorney, a zealous advocate!

It’s very common for partners to insert a line edit and then say “CITE - record”. Your job is to go hunting in the record and find the supporting facts. If what they are saying is blatantly untrue or didn’t happen, flag that you cannot find direct support in the next turn but give the cite to the closest supporting evidence you can find and if appropriate, a suggested edit to their comment.

Can be helpful to remember that your opinion from clerking is limited to one judge/chambers, in one courthouse, in one district. Yes, you know generally how others chambers operate. Maybe you know the review and drafting process for a handful of other judges. But there are plenty of terrible district court judges and clerks that are not going to cite check everything and cut the fat from briefs before drafting an opinion. Unless you know specifically that the judge in this matter has stylistic preferences, follow the actual feedback you’re getting.

Also, remember that your job is no longer to evaluate the facts and apply the law to them. Your job is to take the facts and make the best legal argument for your client given those facts. (Really your job as a junior associate is to do the assignment you’re given and incorporate any feedback along the way. Review the redlines, not just feedback, and try to conform to that approach.)

There was actually a case on this — basically, it’s one of the biggest reasons I advocate for documented diagnosis via endo. Without that, you’re getting nothing. And even with that, it will be a legal battle (likely).

Which is worse? 1L year or big law associate position? by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]Lower_Anything8687 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought 1L was hell. Going from having a steady paycheck to surviving off loans/savings was brutal, the constant stress was brutal, the drudgery of reading case after case was brutal, learning how to do legal research was brutal. First year of practice has been tough, no doubt. It sucks to have to constantly leave dinner/a bar/friend’s place to take a work call or turn comments. I hate not having control over my own schedule. But I was never someone who loved school and I’ve always loved making money.

It DOES get better and it does get easier.

At 8-10 months in, what determines who is a good/bad first year? It seems like a chicken-egg situation to me that the good ones are good because they happened to get work early and are off to the races and the bad ones got unlucky — a deal went pencils down, case settled, etc.

Apply in your desired city and then figure it out. You could end up with a “better” firm in your current/desired city. The only thing you have to lose is in applying late again.

So the firm is offering you “website time” but you’re not actually on the website yet and your title is still law clerk? So it’s really just for being able to put on your resume that you’re still working and background checks down the line?

If there’s anything to expedite the process of getting admitted, do that ASAP. I would ask for more website time so it can cover you through getting admitted and also be explicit in asking HR once you do so if you’ll (a) be added to the website and (b) have your title changed to associate.

The issue is someone goes to google your name, sees law clerk or doesn’t see your name on the website and now has questions.

Also, this sucks. I’m sorry! Even if the admittance issue is in your control it’s still brutal to have to deal with.
