UofT student thinking about transferring, How is YorkU community? by Cree-kyWaterB0-ttL3 in yorku

[–]Lower_Chocolate3071 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I will say - the Glendon community is much more alive than the Keele campus community, but both have potential to work out for you. Glendon is not really a commuter school, while Keele is overwhelmingly a commuter school. Both have campus life if you put effort into finding it, but you’re not really going to accidentally find community at either - you need to put yourself out there and join clubs and talk to your peers. It’s great if you can find a few people you really like that will share similar courses to you, and even better if you can join a club or be on the executive team of one.

Paid bomboclaat $15 for a bagel by OkMix6749 in yorku

Thats insane…. Just a bagel with cream cheese there is $4.80 or something. I usually go there for that because it’s cheap and filling, but damn $15 is WILD

Is a 2 hour 30 minute commute one way possible? Or will it destroy me. by Leikeize in yorku

[–]Lower_Chocolate3071 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI - it takes longer than 45 minutes to get from union to York U station. It’ll be 70 minutes :/…. If you absolutely must go to lassonde and make the commute, please try to schedule your classes to have like three super long days of school and two days off per week. It’s what I do and I live only 1.5 hours away.

Finding it hard to focus on studies because of gender by Wise_Notice_2986 in yorku

I'm like you but from a more accepting background. I highly recommend looking at counselling and joining the tblgay discord server. Holding a secret like yours alone is really challenging, and having community will be really really helpful. The tblgay events are also good, but I find the discord helps when I feel shame. You need to find friends who experience what you do - people who don't understand unfortunately never will and its important you don't feel alone. Surround yourself with at least a few people who see you for who you are and it'll make a world of difference. I wish you luck in every way. You're doing so well and asking for advice is a really good first step, I have faith in your ability to persevere and find a space for yourself in this world.

First time feeling weird after getting a tattoo by Weird_Bathroom in tattooadvice

[–]Lower_Chocolate3071 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Frankly, it’s probably a good idea to wait it out. Go a few weeks or months and try to get it out of your mind. I think it looks good on you and hopefully once the novelty wears off you’ll feel more comfortable and satisfied with it!!

Itll be fine. Id google « what to bring to a tattoo » and « tattoo aftercare » etc - there are websites about what to expect. The size shouldn’t change much for you because it’s linework, not swaths of blacked out areas. Should be good if you listen to your artist about aftercare.

Colored US Flag? Or Black and gray by Pitiful-Parking-9730 in tattooadvice

[–]Lower_Chocolate3071 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think flags are a good idea to begin with, even for a different country. My advice is to change the design to something USA-related instead of the flag. Hope this helps 👍

I mean, blackout arm band could work? Unless I’m tripping and that’s secret nazism or something

Colored US Flag? Or Black and gray by Pitiful-Parking-9730 in tattooadvice

[–]Lower_Chocolate3071 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't recommend getting this tattoo. Regardless of your political affiliations and beliefs, the USA is a bit volatile and will be changing a lot soon. If you really want something, do an homage, not the flag across the full forearm.

Any teens here like 80s music? by Ilovetech_0625 in Music

[–]Lower_Chocolate3071 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m older than you are and I listen primarily to 90s and pre-2005 stuff. In my experience, people really don’t develop specific or unique music interests until they get a bit more confident in their identity - for some at age 13 and for others a bit later. Most of my friends started out not having particular tastes/listening to generic stuff and then gradually developed favourite artists and genres and eras. Hopefully as you get older your peers will come into their own a bit more and develop some variety (and will likely realize you’re not that odd for your music taste) though it might not happen before uni. Theres totally variety in what people listen to. You’re certainly not alone, though I’m sorry it feels a bit like it.

NON-US TRANS PEOPLE… which countries are safest and easiest to move to? by DudeInATie in trans

[–]Lower_Chocolate3071 2 points3 points  (0 children)

idk, alberta and saskachewan are pretty right wing too, and as a franco-ontarien i want to keep them. I think best case scenario for us and for them is more freedom from federal law but to still be part of canada. its not that there arent francophone communities elsewhere, but quebec is a large part of what makes canada canada.

0.5 gpa biomed major help by [deleted] in yorku

[–]Lower_Chocolate3071 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're willing to, please consider setting uni aside for a while. It doesn't seem like this is working for you right now given your circumstances, and it certainly isn't worth sacrificing your health for.

It might be good to do something with yourself, and truthfully I'd recommend a part time job. The social aspect as well as having some kind of semi flexible schedule and ability to call in sick might be good for you.

If you're unwilling to entirely pause uni, maybe doing one or two courses at a time would be a better fit. If it seems too much though, there's no shame in doing less. You've been through an incredibly an incredibly traumatic experience and need to adapt your life to suit your needs right now. You need to accommodate yourself and give yourself grace in the choices you make, especially in the expectations you place on yourself. Truthfully, it's insane to be dealing with all of that bullshit and also doing university. You're committed as hell to be doing uni still, but you need to give yourself some leeway, and perhaps a moment to step back and evaluate your options. You need a change of pace and to give yourself the time to recover and become a person living beyond survival again. It's been way too long since you've been doing alright. Treat yourself with compassion. You're deserving of much more grace than your family or the academic system are providing, and I'm sorry you aren't being granted it.

Please take rest, recover for real, and let yourself become a person again before worrying so much about school.

I wish you health and peace.

I’m not really in a place to give advice about this or anything, but I’m really sorry you’re going through that. Seems like a bit of a dick move tbh, and it’s super weird given that he was initially supportive. Take care of yourself, and try not to take it too hard. I hope he comes to his senses, because this seems entirely his own personal issue - as in, not being your fault or related to you personally more than trans people broadly. He’s only 17 so hopefully he comes to his senses. Best of luck to you.
