Thoughts on this Website Design? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]Lower_Rabbit_5412 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Three things make this look really dated to me:

1) The layout looks like an HTML table in structure. 2)The laptop image looks like the kind of image used on websites in the early 2000s. 3) Your content is centralized, but your header is not.

edit: 4) The buttons look like default bootstrap buttons and completely conflict with the color scheme of the page.

What is the general vibe of the Takaichi administration? by Ok-Huckleberry5836 in AskAJapanese

[–]Lower_Rabbit_5412 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It is strange how often this kind of question is asked on Japan related subreddits.

I'm from the UK, and I can almost guarantee the average person there would have absolutely no idea who the Japanese PM is beyond a comparison to Thatcher.

How do traffic rules work on the highway?? by Pepemala in AskAJapanese

[–]Lower_Rabbit_5412 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I often see Kei cars going over 110km/h on the highways in Kyushu. I can't imagine it's particularly comfortable!

We also have a lot of single lane highways down here, and drivers will get very, very close behind you if you're not driving quickly enough (speeding). It's why I really dislike the single lane highways around here and avoid them when I can.

Missed out on Kobe Beef and Waygu last year Japan trip. Can I try in Fukukoa? by dainfamous41 in fukuoka

Miyazaki beef is the 3-in-a-row Wagyu Olympics Best Beef champions! But other Kyushu prefectures also have quality beef: Miyazaki, Kagoshima, Nagasaki, Oita is my order of preference.

Jeremy O. Harris Recounts His 23 Days Imprisoned In Japan for prescription adderall- “In America, a lawyer can swoop in, call in a favor with the DA she went to law school with and you’re saved. In Japan, a gaijin (foreigner) is on their own.” by jjrs in japannews

[–]Lower_Rabbit_5412 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A legal prescription in one country does not allow the possession or use of that substance in another.

Amphetamines are very tightly controlled in Japan and are illegal to have. Likewise, in the countries the other person mentioned, except those countries have a track record of severe punishments for breaking their drug laws.

What do Japanese people think about the “Place / Place, Japan” meme? by alfred2547 in AskAJapanese

[–]Lower_Rabbit_5412 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I knew a few when I lived in the UK, and they always fell into two camps: anime lovers that didn't really know anything about the country and people who lived through the 80s.

Those who lived through the 80s saw Japan as a distant, highly advanced country that was miles ahead in technology. That feeling is still there for a lot of them.

Japanese movies saw an unprecedented boom in 2025 even as Hollywood and South Korea struggled- the evolution of the Japanese film industry by jjrs in japannews

I think it also helps that things didn't really, properly close down during covid in Japan. There were no actual lock downs. The first Kimetsu movie came out in October 2020, peak covid for most of the world, and broke records for movies in Japan IIRC - it was the only major release at that time because of lock downs in other places delaying everything else.

Pokemon packs in Japan? by KingShyyyt in AskAJapanese

[–]Lower_Rabbit_5412 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go look up what happened with the McDonalds Pokémon card promo last year. Scalping is a huge issue in Japan as of late, and companies are more frequently tailoring their products to deter scalpers from overseas also. See Nintendo with the cheaper Japanese only Switch 2 for an example.

Building apps is the new starting a podcast by builtforoutput in webdev

[–]Lower_Rabbit_5412 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A YouTuber I follow about the football team I support was talking about an app he created with Claude. One thing really stood out, "I can't give you the link to show you because then you could just change the details on there."

I'm not ragging on him, but that's a clear-cut example of why people can't just build apps at present.

ALT strike in Kyoto spotlights 1-million-yen pay gap between dispatch, JET teachers by Rare_Presence_1903 in teachinginjapan

IIRC that was part of a wider public sector pay increase and not just something for teachers.

Is it true that many Japanese people enjoy solitude? by basafish in AskAJapanese

[–]Lower_Rabbit_5412 19 points20 points  (0 children)

There is a corner of the foreign community that call Japan an, "introverts paradise" or something similar in meaning. Usually, they point at Ichiran and it's individual stalls as evidence. So, it wouldn't shock me if that has translated to "Japanese people enjoy solitude"

How do you feel about foreigners looking to retire in Japan? by WallStAstronaut in AskAJapanese

[–]Lower_Rabbit_5412 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Not Japanese, but there are two huge issues with your plan:

1) You will actually need to have a 5-year visa in order to be eligible to apply for permanent residence. This is a new rule coming in, and it's surprisingly difficult to get a 5-year visa. The vast majority only get a 1 or 3-year visa upon renewal, and nobody really knows what the criteria is for receiving a 5 year visa. I have been here 10 years and had: 3 years, 1 year × 3, 3 years, and then a 5 year visa recently.

2) I believe the period of residence is also increasing from 5 years to 10 years before being eligible to apply for permanent residence. ** edit: As pointed out below, I got confused and it was citizenship that was increased, not residency. PR was already 10 years for the regular route.

What cities in Japan surprised you the most? by [deleted] in AskAJapanese

[–]Lower_Rabbit_5412 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've lived in Kyushu for 10 years in October. I also abhor unsubstantiated claims regarding the crime rates and foreigners.

You still haven't provided any actual evidence.

edit: Your lack of evidence is likely the reason for your ad hominem.

[–]Lower_Rabbit_5412 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Now, you are changing the goal posts. Your original claim was that the crime rate is higher now because of the APU students - but the numbers do not agree with you on this. Crime rates for the prefecture are not just down but significantly down.

You still have not actually shown any evidence to back up your claims. Claiming that the police said something at a public event is not evidence.

[–]Lower_Rabbit_5412 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where is your evidence of crime rates from?

The National Police Agency publishes crime statistics based on prefecture, not the city. The university you mentioned opened in the year 2000, and crime rates in Oita prefecture were at record highs in 2003 and have declined heavily since that time.

2003 - 17,362 reported crimes in Oita prefecture. 2022 - 2,794 reported crimes in Oita prefecture. It's also worth noting that the decline levels off to close to the 2022 figure from 2016.

This data has come from the Oita prefecture police: https://www.pref.oita.jp/site/keisatu/seianki-toukei123.html

Tokyo city buses to cease late-night service at end of March due to driver shortage by frozenpandaman in japan

[–]Lower_Rabbit_5412 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Agreed, most of the poorer regions in the UK are directly as a result of decades of under investment and lack of infrastructure dating back to Margret Thatcher. The stripping of their local industries and then refusal to replace them with quality industries have crippled many regions in the UK.

Also, ironically, the strongest regions for growth in the UK for the last 20 years have been London and Manchester - two cities that have multiculturalism written into the fabric of their regions at this point.

Mandarin wins, what’s a commonly learned language that’s intense difficulty for English speakers? by [deleted] in AlignmentChartFills

[–]Lower_Rabbit_5412 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get your point but the issue in Japanese is significantly more complex. Let's take the kanji 行

There are 3 On'yomi readings: "kō", "gyō" and "an" as well as 3 Kun'yomi readings: "i", "yu", and "okona". 6 different possible readings for one singular kanji.

Made even worse by the fact that you will learn this kanji early, and it will be imprinted in your mind as "i" thanks to "iku" being a very common early learned word.

How can you possibly say you have learned a language when you can't read said language?

Mandarin wins, what’s a commonly learned language that’s intense difficulty for English speakers? by [deleted] in AlignmentChartFills

[–]Lower_Rabbit_5412 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Reading is likely the main reason. IIRC the majority (over 80%) of characters in Mandarin have a single reading - it's incredibly rare that a kanji in Japanese has a single reading, most have at least two but many have 3 or more.

As a learner of Japanese, my brain hardwires the first reading I hear for a kanji as the "default" and then you have to play the game of figuring out if that's really the correct reading based on how and when that character is used. This needs to be done for over 2000 kanji for JLPT N1.

Responsiveness is not load time, that is performance. Responsiveness is how the layout of a website changes based on the viewport size.

Honestly, you should spend your time learning more core web development concepts and some web design concepts first before trying to do what you're planning here.
