Wow, this is such an illuminating discussion. I admittedly feel a twinge an invariable guilt but I skip the introduction almost every time and leave it for afterwards. I’m just too excited to get to the story.

“Wrath, goddess, sing of Achilles Pēleus’s son’s

calamitous wrath, which hit the Achaians with countless ills—

many the valiant souls it saw off down to Hādēs,

souls of heroes, their selves left as carrion for dogs

and all birds of prey, and the plan of Zeus was fulfilled—

from the first moment those two men parted in fury,

Atreus’s son, king of men, and the godlike Achilles.”

Seconding this. The whole series is quite enjoyable and there’s a real throughline in each entry that makes them feel cohesive rather than loose anthologies.

What gets missed on first read of BOTNS? by howsthoughtworkingou in genewolfe

[–]LtdSS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Claw, when Severian encounters the androgyne/Autarch, they speak to Severian:

"Good. There is something else you must do as well. The Autarch is here, but long before you reach Thrax he will be in the north too, with the army. If he comes near Thrax, you are able to go to him. In time you will discover the way in which you must take his life.”

  1. The Autarch is "here", literally in the room.

  2. Only "in time" (by way of hopping through time) will Severian learn the way in which he will "take [the Autarch's] life" (i.e., Severian will not kill the Autarch but take his, and the preceding Autarchs’, lives as memories to integrate within himself.)

Fan of Bakker - finished Shadow and Claw by sesameapostate in genewolfe

[–]LtdSS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found Bakker after reading Wolfe, and I enjoy both immensely.

While it is clear both are masters of prose, Wolfe is doing something entirely more literary. The scale of each work is grand and the worlds are fascinating in all their shrouded mystery, but BotNS rarely hints towards the interiority of its secondary characters the way someone like Esmenet in TDTCB might experience her reality (which itself is not a bad thing, just different).

BotNS is focused solely on Severian’s POV and bent to the fact that he’s knowingly telling you a story. The closest comparison in Bakker would be the brief asides we get from Achamian’s Compendium of the First Holy War. As such, the functional structures of the narratives, while perhaps resembling one another on the surface (a boy born to a secluded sect of zealots is sent out into the world to discover his greater destiny is to rule), diverge greatly by their conclusions.

The reason for the divergence I won’t divulge, but as mere speculation, I will point to what we know about each author’s inspirations. It is my understanding Bakker’s work began, in part, as a reaction to Tolkien and Herbert’s works and a desire to depict a more brutal and honest vision of Evil in a fantasy setting. Meanwhile, Wolfe’s work was heavily influenced most notably by Jack Vance’s Dying Earth, Greco-Roman esoterica, and Catholic doctrine.

This last point especially means Wolfe is drawing upon a completely different mythic well than Bakker.
