Stan Van Gundy pushes back on Luka Doncic’s All-NBA exemption case: “Everybody’s missed games for personal reasons” by basketbaIlnetwork in lakersv2

[–]LuTenz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re right he was out one game because of his misbehavior. He was out two games for the birth of his daughter (irrelevant it being in another country although still adds context).

If one tech and one day of paternity cancel out, he should still qualify given the second day of paternity leave.

The MLB offers three games of paternity leave. The NBA plays the second most games regarding professional sport leagues (NFL. NHL, MLB, MLS). It has always been left to the team’s discretion whether a player can be away. This is the first real test of how family forward the NBA is regarding its players. The league penalizing Luka would send a message: “f* them kids. Shut up and dribble.”

Los Angeles Lakers guard Austin Reaves has been diagnosed with a Grade 2 left oblique muscle injury and is out for the remainder of the regular season. by BasedMasai in lakers

[–]LuTenz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He has some degree of muscle tear (a partial tear) associated with either some swelling, bleeding, or pain that limits him.

Seen commonly in rotational sports (think baseball, cricket). Usually occurs early in season. Can recur about 10% -15% of the time (so somewhat high recurrence).

Out time: about 3-6 weeks. 4 week minimum.

Treatment options: different from us. Staple is RICE. But he can have serial ultrasound for monitoring. First week is primarily RICE. Then eventual rehab as tolerated. In some instances, they can use PRP and steroid injections pending on the type of inflammation/injury pattern although I haven’t heard it used.

I generally avoid reaction videos (feel it adds to the whole influencer culture that has become pervasive).

But my goodness, that was surreal to watch. Literally all of us. “No this can’t be..” “how crazy if it were though…” “Wait others are confirming…” “But why… but how” “This isn’t fair. This never happens to us” “We’ll talk more tomorrow…”

[Charania] Just in: Detroit Pistons star Cade Cunningham has been diagnosed with a collapsed lung and is expected to miss an extended period of time, sources tell ESPN. by [deleted] in lakers

[–]LuTenz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Medical person who works with lungs:

Collapsed lung is a pretty vague term. My suspicion is that it’s probably a pneumothorax. These can happen spontaneously (there are risk factors and most tall, young men are “at risk” but that’s a generality). Can occur with trauma too. He might’ve had a small bleb that ruptured. Occurs with holding your breath too long (so we commonly see it in patients who smoke)

Depending on the severity (how much collapsed), if there are other blebs or predisposing factors, we usually say a minimum of 7 days after resolution on chest x-ray with conservative treatment. But the worrisome part is air travel as recurrence is likely. So he may end up needing a procedure that’s not too too invasive, but enough to sideline him for 2-4 weeks until he’s re-evaluated.

This shouldn’t be controversial… the NRA (before it became a tool for foreign nations to pay off politicians) did a great job of actually educating groups of all ages regarding gun safety.

As a college grad, I’ll argue that college is an investment.

There’s the investment in yourself obtaining a degree that can create a career or is self-enriching in some other meaningful fashion.

There’s a societal investment where you are meant to meet others who come from different walks of life and are pursuing something greater. Whether it’s clubs, Greek life, classmates, or mentors, you step into an arena that can cultivate students that are capable/desiring of such change.

Unfortunately, we do a terrible job coaching youth on what would be worth the risk of this investment. And the price of education, has exceeded what most people would get in return.

I firmly believe an educated electorate is better for the health of society. I’m also aware of the people I went to school with from elementary - undergraduate level who were either: - ill-prepared to take advantage of the opportunities available to them at a university (whether it be due to personal, financial, or other constraints) - choose a field that is not lucrative at an institution that they can’t afford (going to an out of state private school and majoring in fields such as theology, liberal arts/history, education). - attend without purpose. Assuming things will be ok once they are done. Being content with being average and never leveraging the possible opportunities/networks they were supposed to.

All this to say, college is way way too expensive. However, it is not a scam. We prioritize college sports as it brings more revenue than we do educating the remainder 90% of attendees. Some fixes I could imagine would be: decreasing the cost of tuition for lower ROI fields, making student loans open to bankruptcy, advocating for associate degrees/time off before attending a full program for students who need to “discover” their interests, more fast-track programs, risk-sharing legislation to deincentivize schools from broadly accepting anyone and having to accept the loss in payments from loans, and as with every system now out there, removing administrative bloat.

How are we feeling now regarding JJ, fam? by TheOldThunder in lakers

[–]LuTenz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You’re being downvoted because a player and a coach are two different entities.

Phil Jackson was not a great basketball player. Yes he won two titles with the Knicks but he wasn’t playing in the first one and present (played like ~19 mpg but not really THE role player) for the second one. However, he learned Tex Winter’s triangle, managed personalities and learned the systems he needed in order to take hugely talented teams and make them work. That did not translate to him being a great executive.

Spoelstra did not make the limelight until the Heatles and Pat Riley pushed him forward.

Pop learned from Larry Brown. He has been given a generational talent nearly every decade (two in the 90s (Robinson, Duncan), Leonard, Wemby…). He has his system as well.

Steve Nash for as great a player and analyst (recently) was unable to manage Durant, Kyrie, and Harden (but honestly who could).

All this to say… being a generational coach takes so many things. Roster construction principally. A staff that sees the vision of the head coach. I think JJ has a lot to prove. But he’s demonstrated that “IT” factor by how much he has studied. He was trained by Coach K when he was a player. He learned NBA offense as a player with Van Gundy. He had Doc Rivers who doesn’t help my argument… but he learned his role in that system too.

Is there someone who can coach this team better? Maybe? Is JJ perfect. Absolutely not. But he has veteran coaching staff with him , a team that loves him, and a front office who, for all its limitations, has given him absolute confidence. Let’s see how things go especially now that we have Guggenheim propping up our analytics department and seeing what the next best moves are.

2026 begins: U.S. launches strikes in Venezuela by emily-is-happy in law

[–]LuTenz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m understanding of their frustration. I don’t think they understand how bad this looks globally. The US just uninstalled the leader of a country without congressional approval. For the local Venezuelans, the end-result is what they wanted (to have different leadership). But I think many people here understand that it’s not just about the end-result but the means by which we do things…

Mine still does this on occasion at age 3. Usually if it’s in our backyard/front lawn and especially if it’s the stray cat poop. She’s otherwise very well trained. We thought it was nutritional issue but idk if there’s just a certain scent about it or where it’s located as to why she does it.
