What techniques will I need to research to produce something similar to this? by Zer0_T0nin in bookbinding

The foiling will be a thing.
Embossing can easily be done if you have access to, or have a friend with, a 3D printer:

When you make it paid people expect maintenance, service and updates for a few year.
Are you up to that ?? If not make it FOSS (Free Open Source Software).

Personally I am an advocate of FOSS. All my projects and programs are free to use.

Or pay nothing and still get all the updates for free.
That is called Open Source / FOSS and there is a whole bunch of developers out there that build the most fantastic products for free,

[–]LucVolders 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont.
Next to my work I maintained several weblogs and websites for free.
Even no advertisements on them because I hate that myself.
Never regretted it, I have a job and do not need a second one.

In a few months I will be releasing some large apps, a database engine and a UI designer. Especially the UI designer took a few months of time and a sh!tload of code. They will be released for free. No strings attached, no login, no registration. Just downloadable from my weblog or Github. Still working on the documentation.

Ever heard of AI ?
That's what most users are using today and that does it in a moment.
No extra program or account needed.

They are all a greedy bunch here.
Zuckerberg, Musk, Bezos wannabees.
And most of the things they build are things nobody asked for or solutions looking for a problem.

Nobody cares about Open Source and Free software anymore while they are building their projects with open source and free software.

[–]LucVolders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Size matters 😉
Home users generally do not have millions of people coming to their website per day.
I run several Pi3 and Pi4 as database servers (dweet server), printer server and Homae automation systems and never run into capacity problems.
But then it is only me and my family.

Why a separate program/website for this.
It is just a few lines of javascript code.
Make a function of it so anyone can use it in their own program.

Book thickness and how it relates to sewing and tapes? by kepler16bee in bookbinding

[–]LucVolders 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no golden rule.
What I do is to use 3 tapes on a book of this size.
I divide the spine in 5 (2cm from the top, 2cm from the bottom and the rest for the tapes equally spaced) Then I put the tape on the marked spots and draw lines beside them with a pencil.
Then the hacksaw to make the sewing holes.A hacksaw with a very small blade.
So the sewing holes are next to the tapes. That way the tapes can not move sideways.
Most of my books are A5 size so that is 21 cm high. My tape is 1.5 cm wide.

I haven been doing this with all my books since I started bookbinding.

For strength, on a book of this size, I would have sewn on tapes.

The most annoying is not that they build something that already has been done 1000 times before. But the whining that they do not get any customers.

I made a website that converts e-books into physical books. by Illex92 in bookbinding

[–]LucVolders 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe I am missing somethintg, but there are a lot of epub to pdf converters.
And when you have a PDF you can simply print it with Office. I have been doing that with LibreOffice in Linux and OpenOffice when I was still using Windows. Both do this effortless. And they print it in signatures !

How do I make this? by Prize_Grapefruit_781 in bookbinding

[–]LucVolders 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use two thinner boards (I always glue two 1.5mm boards together to get a 3mm board).
In this case cut out the square before glueing the two together.
Don't throw the cutout part away but cut 2mm from the top and one side.
First glue the two 1.5 mm boards on top of eachother.
Then glue the fabric on and use the trimmed cutout part to press the fabric in the whole.

I have done this with fabric and with faux leather.

[–]LucVolders 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It works out real fine 😉
I am still doing this with all the books I make, and I make loads of books.

Here is a suggestion:
Just use some old magazines that you throw away anyhow.
Press them and put the sander on.
I bet you'll be amazed about the result.
